Hi!

No, don't worry, I'm not going to talk about the stats - they are fine as is - but I (at last!) got my first Protectors, along with a Custodian, earlier this week. While I was flying one of the Protectors around (yeah, I'm a big kid sometimes!) it occured to me that the model woud make a fine Moray - but not quite as it stands.

If you haven't already got a Protector, it's one of these:

Pretty, eh?

Anyway, the model comes in two pieces - the hull is pretty much as you see it, but the command bridge (above the engines) has to be glued on.

While that command bridge seems fine for the starship, it looks a tad out of place if the model is repping a Moray (plus if the Protector goes in the list it may lead to confusion!)

Also, a piece on the forward hull looks like the cockpit of a Tau aircraft (youll see which one), presumably a secondary/emergency bridge on the Protector.

So, how about for the Ion Moray, one simply leaves the separate bridge piece off the model?

That way the craft looks a bit more unique, in my view.

For the Rail-Moray, one could cut off the 2 pairs of prow modules and fit the head units off of 40k Rail Rifles.

How does that sound? (I only have 2 Protectors, which I intend to keep as Protectors, so I can't spare the conversion... plus I've already glued on my bridges onto the models! The idea still seems sound though, I may do it if I get more Protectors to play with)

Of the FW designs, this is my least favorite for some reason. I used Emissarys for my Morays and did a little de-spaceship-ification on mine to make them look a little more atmospheric.

However, what you proposed will work.

I actually really like this vessel. One question, how does it compare size-wise to an Epic Manta?

If you have any of the other FW Tau ships, this pic should help get an idea of the scale of the thing:

I don't have a Manta to compare it to, sorry! EDIT: And that Custodian should be on a large flying base, just so you know...

I'll answer that question for you when my last FW package arrives in a few days.

Hi CS,
the Model is about the Size of the Tigershark with a slightly greaty Wingspan. So if you remember that the Manta has a Wingspan of 15cm ,you?ll know that they are about a third of the Manta?s Size ( in Wingspan ) and nearly 2/3 of it?s depth.
You may take a look at my Pics in the Mini Pics Thread ( I think it?s the 5th) you will see a Manta with an Emissary.

Cheers!
Steele

Funny, different tastes, I think this is the coolest looking Forgeworld Tau vessel. This alongside the Castellan escort.

My first Tau fleet vessels (somewhere in 2007...or 2008...) will be 2 Protectors & 6 Castellans.

Many thanks... so it is about a perfect size. Great... I dont own a full Tau fleet in Gothic, and I prefer the SG vessels, so most of the FW BFG ships will go into my EpicA Tau force.

The protector as photo'd is a nice piece of gear. No question about that.

The emissary works quite well for the Moray too though.

In fact, I like the all around nature of the Emissary better for a moray than a BFG vessel. The large head shape on the emissary makes it a good candidate for a smaller looking manta without the body bulk - essentially, exactly what the moray is. The missle bays seem appropriate on the emissary and the conversion for ion/rail isn't really all that problematic with GS molds from the Manta... it works quite easily in fact.

Once you see them in person though, the custodian is easily the neatest looking tau vessel to me - if we are just talking about cool looking tau BFG vessels. :)~

BTW: I've tried using the protector as well as the emissary in E:A... the only thing I've noticed is that its a bit easier to avoid being out of coherency after planetfall with the protector due to the large wing span. Scattering two d6 cm isn't all that far with each vessel. The protector's wingspan pretty much guarantees that you will not be out of coherency. All that said, I'm typically not out of coherency with the Emissary's either, but it does happen some times that I'm forced to move. The few times I had the protectors as proxy's - I didn't have to move after planetfall unless distance or facing was an issue... that did happen once with the protectors and happens a fair amount of the time with the Emissary's.

Cheers,

Um... Isn't the Emissary a BFG vessel?

I think they are talking about using different BFG models to reprisent the non-existant Moray in Epic.  Yes the Emissary is a BFG vessel.

LOL - Nerroth, RD's got it. I responding to this post... err... your post:

To summarize, I agree - but see above, the Emissary also makes a good conversion source.

Cheers,
