Given that Support craft don't carry out air attacks as such, can they be engaged by AA units?

The rules state that flak attacks are carried out after an approach move(and also can be carried out during a  disengage if not already fired), but the SC doesn't make approach moves.

But it also says AA units can engage aircraft that move past them.

Are SC classed as aircraft?

Cheers all

Hi,
No Support Craft are not classed as E:A aircraft, therefore AA cannot be used against them. Use the normal AT/MW/TK weapons against them :)

Dobbsy,

Please see the below referenced text. Your question is around Support Craft - so I'll start there...

Tau v4.1, page 4
Support Craft
Support craft remain high up in the air, this means they can always draw a line of fire to any target and vice versa, *like aircraft*. They also never block LOF to other units, including other support craft. They ignore terrian when moving and never count as being in cover, nor can they provide cover for friendly troops, as they are too far away from the ground. They can only deploy troops immediately after they have performed a planetfall. In an assault, they work exactly like skimmers.

====> We establish that support craft is merely a special rule defining how a vessel acts. We do not define what Type of vehicle it is. We only establish its behavior.

Tau v4.1, page 14
Tau Moray Assault Ship
Type: War Engine
Notes: Support Craft

======> Here we establish that the Moray is a War Engine. (note, it is not a War Engine, Aircraft). We also establish from the Notes: section that this is also a Special Rule abiding Support Craft. Although I did not copy the text, the Manta is identified and described in an identical fashion in this context.

======> The Tau Support Craft to date are simply War Engines with special movement, LOF and assault rules. One might think of them as an extra high soaring skimmer in generic terms. Therefore, since they are meerly WE as far as enemy aircraft are concerned, enemy aircraft may indeed perform ground assaults on Tau Support Craft formations.

======> Tau Support Craft may in turn use their AA systems as Flak vs. these enemy formations in the normal fashion.

======> Furthermore, enemy flak may not be used against Tau Support Craft to date, as they are not designated as aircaft, simply WE.

======> Hope that helps Dobbsy,
