Since the tau are back in season I thought I'd bring up something which has always been a worry for me. When I've used it it has been devastating (this was admitably with self planetfall). Its dropping a Manta onto the other side of the table, typically 75cm off the enemy blitz, essentially putting me in a position to sustain turn 1. At 3000 points it was devastating, especially against 'common' armies not tooled up for such a thing (or armies that might rely on deterants that by not being there at start of game it bypassed)

Now the stats have changed a bit, is it still such a killer tactic? Obviously I'b be having a go with it if I wasn't stuck with vassel.

Note it wasn't such a good idea at 4000 points where nearly every army had the tools to stuff it if played right.

TRC,

Does this not require two successful rolls for initiative? It also means that since the Manta does not have free planetfall anymore, that this is a very expensive proposition, don't you think?

Also, I think it would be preferable to hear about a concern after demonstrating evidence of the concern rather than speculate.

After my last game I would never again bring a Manta without the associated spaceship.  It's way too vulnerable to start on the table.

It was demonstrated in the past - mine was a question to see if its still the same. As in to discover others experience and then inform my own strategies. Not a complaint. And only 1 init roll - :) I can fail the second with not to many worries :)

As to cost - 900 for the manta and 2 separate TK attacks doesn't seem too harsh.

Fair enough.

As you factor in advantages and disadvantages, also keep in mind that there is a new "always visible" rule, which has an impact on this unit's capabilities.

Which is mainly a disadvantage these days (with popped up no longer having LOS to everything).

Note that 900 points of Hero/Manta also means no other air caste assets at 3000 points, which is another downside to the combo.
