Being relatively weak in FF is not the same as not being able to do it at all.

Having 1 or 2 (In my case stealths and FWs) specialist units that are ok in FF with the rest of the army being pretty damed rubbish still leaves the army OVERALL as being pretty weak at FF.  Even in this list FWs are only on a par with stormtroopers and no-where near the same league as space marines or Eldar.

Making these 2 units able to do FF and making the crisis units a good support unit fits the background and gives these 2 a clearly defined role, which is something they are definately lacking in the V5.1 list and the whole list suffers as a consequence.

Engagements are a major part of the game and not being able to do it AT ALL makes the Tau list rather dull and misses out a hugely exciting and decisive part of the game for the Tau player

Oh, they shouldn't miss out on assaults at all. A good opponent will make sure they'll participate in plenty of them

I think a possible way to attempt to solve the Assault problem would be to
A) improve the FF valies where appropriate.
B) lower armour values on those units.

I feel this would give those units stats more representative of their abilities whilst lowering their assault capabilities.

Players would find that using engage actions would be very risky with lower survival chances but if they are using cover and get assaulted by an opponent they have better armour saves (cover).

I think this would lead to a more Tau feel in play.Players could attempt to set up engagements with overwhelming support or try to tempt opponents to engage Tau whilst the Tau are making the most of the terrain features. Both seem very Tau like to me and make using them aggressively ( assault wise) even more risky than  now.

Isn't having no save at all also problematic in defence?

And well, the stealth suits arent bad, thats for sure, but definitely not that good to make it impossible for FW to get a 4+ in FF. Especially considering that I saw stealth suits not really used in combination with FW, actually somewhere very far away on the board in those BatReps I read.

No. You are in cover in those cases that enemy can assault you

Not always. You don't always get the chance to be in cover....

Is it not feasible for Tau infantry to be the FF element and the armour be the shooty element of Tau lists? Each type of unit would have a specific tasking then. The organisation could be adjusted to compensate for possible overpower i.e less armour available etc.

Why should FW be supported in assault?

I just thought you meant those two units would be too good if used together with coordinated fire, if FW got buffed up in FF.

Co-ordinated Fire doesn't let you assault... so I'm not sure what the problem is...  :sulk:

Hmm...so Firewarriors with FF4+ would be really good.  So good in fact they would be in every Tau army.  Firewarriors would be a must-have unit for the Tau.  Instead of complaints about Tau armies being dominated by GMs (like in the 4.x series lists) it would be a wave of Firewarriors?

Sounds like a good thing to me! :)

I think Hena means that the Tau use Co-ord as a replacement for assaulting. Tau break the enemy with firing not assaulting. So having both you would be able to smash formations with both.

Essentially? Yes. This is what a bunch of us have been asking for for an aeon now. I think we got resigned to the fact it won't happen however so we compromised on it.
