Well at least me, but also a couple of others have asked for a 'mission' statement' for the Tau.

Some arguments are simply about style and what balance to seek would also be determined by what they are meant to be good at or bad at.

So if you get the chance CS could you write a paragraph on how fluff wise Tau operate and fight for the period/war this list is drawn from and rules wise what should be the resultant play style?

An example of one play style is Lions summation 'massive short-range firepower, highly mobile, with enough long-range firepower to pin the opponent to allow other forces to close and destroy in detail.'

Then we can argue again, just with more direction!

Thanks for splitting this thought out from the other threads, Chris.

I'll second/third/whatever this request, CS.

I have been thinking of this a lot recently. My thoughts are here:

Please feel free to comment in this thread.

Thanks.

Did you mean your linked thread, or this one here?

In any case, CS, please post an answer about how you see/want the Tau list to behave, at least more than The following aspects to the Tau list in EA will not be discussed and are set:

- Tau firefight values

This implies to me that you want to stick with the 3e 'feel' of Tau (Please, Aun'O, don't let them get close), as opposed to the 4e Tau 'feel' of "In yer face, killin' yer dudes", when about half of the list was discussed around the 4e feel.

I'm going to assume he meant this thread.

Tau Mission Statment(s)

Tau main list:

Guided by the Etherals; they value strategy over territory and will readily abandon an untenable position.

They abhor the chaos of Mon'tau  and consider a close combat a marker of a failed defense.

While their support units are fast moving and flexible, it is the resolute blocks of Firewarrior's that take and hold objectives.

Faced with an agressive assault, most Firewarrior's put their trust in their rifle, in their heavy supporting brethren and in the Etherals.

Fast attack tactics are deemed largely a distraction, although every general acknolowdges the need for scouts.

It is in the interplay between the supporting formations and the armyline that true victory can be found.

By the guile of the Water Caste:

The tau Empire has absorbed many races and they all contribute to it's giant armies. While the Kroot are old enough (and numerous enough) allies to be a common sight on the battlefield, the newer or rarer races do their share too.

Where the presiding Etheral has many friends in the Water Caste then the enemy may find himself facing Mating Swarms of the Vespids, the bizzare armour of the Demiurge, the Great Knarlocs of Pesh, trusted human auxilleries and many others in addition to more common units of the Tau.

This is meant to be a modeller's army with a wide range of types of things to paint.

By the might of the Earth caste.

All is done for the Greater Good and any Firewarrior would give his life gladly. But why give your life when you can live to fight another day?

Utilising drones is common across all forces, but to field them as a viable support option an Etheral needs contacts throughout the Earth caste's premier engineers.

Heavily mechanized and specializing in delivering intense Firefights just outside of your reach, the ably designed Tau heavies circle your forces, bringing pressure to a point without ever leaving the foolish oppenent a chance to swing.

Although well supported by heavier weaponary then the average firewarrior every deployment is to face your death. If left isolated or pinned in the open then the entire formation can crumple in horror from the Mon'tau.

Farsight Enclave:

Although barely capable of fielding a full (6000pts) Farsight knows how to inspire the best from his troops.

Hardened from restless training and endless sporadic warfare against the Orks, troops under his command are not afraid of personal combat and display a degree of initative and ferocity that most Tau would condemn.

Cut off from the resources of the Empire, Farsight can call on no alien auxilleries or replacements for lost craft and so weakened remmenants of heavy formations are often fielded directly with the Firewarriors while others are moved into a skirmishing role.

The few earth caste trained technicians he has do their best and have refitted some burned out carriers with more unconventional weaponary. These poor imitations of the Empire's technological drive have nonetheless found their own battlefield niche.

In short, in order to best defeat the Orks, Farsight's Enclave has become a bit green.
