I'm not very familiar with the Tau. I've never played them in 40K nor read a Codex. To be honest I've always disliked them until now. What changed for me is the way a Tau army looks in Epic scale. They're really very impressive. But before I can start thinking of collecting any I have a few questions that I hoped someone could help me with.
*First off, what list is considered to be "official" the ForgeWorld list or some other one?
*Next, is the FW list only available through the Taros Campaign book or do we have permission to reproduce it in PDF format?
*A question about the models. Are there any models in the list that aren't made at the present by FW? Are there any models made by FW that there isn't rules for in the lists?
*Finally what is the general feel of the Tau? Do they play similar to the Eldar? And going back to the lists, is there a favorite amongst players?
thank you

1) I'd say the FW list is the most official, but the list on these boards is the most widely used and accepted. The rules are currently being debated, with some changes having been agreed upon, so a new version is likely reasonably soon.
2) The FW list is indeed only available in the Taros book.
3) The FW list has an almost complete model line, and almost all the FW Tau models are used in the FW list, though the list has some problems, particularly in unit balance, such as all hammerhead variants costing the same even though some are definately better.
The list on these forums (the "SG" list) contains several non-canon units for which no model is available. It too has balance issues, but unlike the FW list it is actually occasionally updated.
4) The two lists play slightly differently. The FW list plays as a mobile, mid-ranged firing line, while the SG list plays more as a long-ranged, more static army. This is variable of course depending on the list taken.
For both lists, Tau are pretty mobile, good at shooting, have reasonable saves, are average in firefights and awful in close combat.
