Turn 2

The Chosen teleport right in front of the AMHC preparing to engage with the new turn! The AMHC check the contents of the underwear....

Intiative: Tau

With a sigh of relief the AMHC quickly doubles away from the Chosen to the left and opens fire on Retinue 1 killing 1 inf and 4 ?rhinos and breaks it. It retires into the ruin at the road junction.

The FW fail to retain and move sideways towards the Blitz objective to hold it. 1 BM

The Decimator doubles forward again, shooting at the Hammerhead group and kills 2 vehicles - breaking them. they retire to the rear wood.

Failing to retain the Moray shoots the Decimator and destroys it.

The Chosen double over to the FWs and fire on them for no kills.

The Ravager retains and doubles through the woods (passing its terain test) in front of the road junction to shoot the Stingrays, killing 2 vehicles and adding 3 BMs

The Tetras double over and fire on the Chosen killing 2 (3BMs)

The Barracudas retain and drop in for a ground attack mission on the Chosen right on their table edge. This is interrupted by the CAP from the SwiftDeaths. They move to intercept and the Skyray flak fails to hit. Having nowhere to go but the front arcs of the Barracudas the SwiftDeaths are forced to Jink to avoid all being shot down as the Barracudas AA attacks hit all aircraft and 1 is still shot down(3BMs). The Barracudas only lay 1 BM on the Chosen but it is enoughto break them

Forlorn Hope march to the far right of the table to take up positions beside the Tetras for a coming assault.

The Orca rumbles in for a ground attack on the Chosen hitting once and killing another broken unit.

The Raptors march over to the Broadsides preparing for an assault.

END Turn

Turn 4

The Moray sustains on the Ravager stripping 1 shield and doing 2 DC giving it 5 DC total and 1 Critical hit

The Stingrays retain and advance to shoot the Raptors killing 1 and again breaking them.

The Ravager marshalls and regains 3 shields and sheds 3 BMs and moves to the rear ?of the table near its deployment zone and under the umbrella of the overwatching Retinue 2.

The Swift Deaths retain and go onto CAP

The Broadsides double and fire on the Ravager knocking down 1 shield and giving it 1BM as it makes all its saves.

The Orca fails to retain and stands down.

No Chaos activations

FWs sustain fire on the Ravager, the warriors' Devilfish loosing their seekers to minimal effect of 1 shield and 1BM

The Hammerheads advance to fire on the Ravager stripping 1 shield and adding another BM

The Death Wheel engages the nearby FWs in a firefight killing 1, but the valiant FWs knock out both shields and the result is a broken Death Wheel! Which holds it's ground due to fearless. The FWs consolidate on the blitz objective.

Forlorn Hope advances through the woods next to the right hand chaos objective to fire on the ?Hammerheads for 1 BM

Barracudas move to strafe the embattled Ravager ?but the Swift Deaths intercept, but manage to inflict no hits on the Tau aircraft which puts another 1 DC on the Titan.

Finally, as a last desperate gamble, the brave Crisis suits double across the battlefield, braving overwatch fire from the 2nd Retinue to fire on the teetering Ravager, losing the remaining gun drones and gaining a blast marker in the process. With one of the 4 crisis teams suppressed the others open fire but the Shas'O manages to get the final solitary shot through the titan's remaining armour and the Ravager comes crashing down! (BTS)

Result was a very closely run one. If I hadn't have killed the Ravager I would most likely have lost on points so to do it with the final roll of the dice it was very lucky.

Tau 2 BTS, TNH
Chaos 1 BTS

Me (and I reckon fellows like E&C) bet the Tau win :) If only because the chaos list doesn't have three ferals, 2 single decimators, 2 formations of chosen etc etc :)

Interesting list incidentally, though I prefer Piranha to Tetra, reckon I would always take at least two formations now to use as artillery. Also surprised no skyray with the firewarriors, if they are in devilfish it seems a shame not to give them a markerlight. Also why not Tigersharks instead of Baracuda? better all round and massively more survivable. The stingrays also make the Ion's seem somewhat irrelavent.

Anyway I await both this and the views of the people back home who got sent the Tau list over the weekend and will give their verdicts on whether or not they give up testing it and insist I play something else when I return (on the 24th!).

Well what can I say? My opponent isn't beardy? BL list has quite a few flaws and IMO should not have been made official.

Also surprised no skyray with the firewarriors, if they are in devilfish it seems a shame not to give them a markerlight
Well my opponent likes to smash my AMHC(BTS) as much as he can. AA is necessary.

Also why not Tigersharks instead of Baracuda?
One is not enough and 2 are too expensive. It's 50 points I lose elsewhere in a tightly purchased list. You can include any toys you want but in the end with the Tau being so fragile I need careful management of the formations I take. Like I've said before, Tau don't really win games convincingly IMO. They don't hold territory that well due to fragility. I always scrape by when it comes to objectives because I've usually had most of my formations smashed up by games end. I'm forced to eek out meagre wins most often.

Yeah but its 50 points to make them many hundreds of % tougher. 1 hit kills a barracuda, 1 hit is ignored by a tigershark and they carry more firepower. Well worth dropping something like the stingray upgrade or swapping ions for stingrays, losing network drones etc etc (lots of ways to do it in short) especially if you are worried about fragility. Hell your gun drones can be a seperate activation then and dropped in for cross fire, objective claiming etc.

As for not winning convincing that will always be a matter of opinion. My most convincing wins after that horrible early version of black legion are consistently with Tau. I sent out an email to all the guys I play with in london, will ask Gavin to ask the main epic club and also probably quiz the UK tourney goers to see what they all think, to try and capture the views of those who don't spend all their time on the internet and post it up so a few more opinions can be heard.

Also why so few markerlights in general and then taking units like stingrays that really rely on them?

many hundreds of % tougher
ha! the one time I used the AX10 it got blown out of the sky by one interception! 2Dc 5+ armour means jack IMO. I've never put stock in dice statistics as each single die roll is so variable.
Your supposed 5+ = hundreds of % better? there's still 4 notches which mean you'll die :D Let me put it this way - in all the times I've taken Barras I've lost perhaps 2 out of a sdn at any one time. I took the AX10 once and it died horribly without firing a shot. I'm happy with Barras and you wont convince me otherwise :D Each to their own I say.

Why so few MLs? Stingrays, skyrays, tetras and sentry turrets have them. i rarely run out of ML support with this army. And I would in no way drop Stingrays for 50 points of aircraft! You dont win the game in the air. I need solid AP weaponry on the ground and the Stingrays are it. Proven themselves to me time and again.

Yes air seems sadly highly subjective to a range of factors including how the players think about it.

As for the Maths question
Tigershark - 2DC 5+ - 1/9 chance of a kill from one shot (2/3 fail save, 1/6 chance of a critical)
Barracuda - 6+ - 5/6 chance of a kill from one shot
Difference of going from 1/6 chance of surviving to 8/9 - 433% (I think?)

Though of course with 3 planes you can set them up like this
_ _
  i

For 270 degree AA defence against intercepts.

2Dc 5+ armour means jack IMO.
So why not give all the aircraft 2+ armour saves?  :alien:

On a different note why didn't you ever use co-ordinated fire? I find it is possibly one of the best things about the Tau, especially against an army with lower range and small formations/transport vehicles.

So why not give all the aircraft 2+ armour saves?
:) ?That's not what I said... aircraft have crap saves was more my point. whether its 5+ or 6+ it's still crap. I choose Barras coz they look cooler too :D

I didn't use Co-ord fire because
A/ When i needed it I didn't realise the Tetras had it ? Trying to keep up with all the changes lately is terrifyingly annoying :D

and

B/ My opponent likes me to use it so I ?eat up my activations... ?So wasn't playing into his hands mwuahaha! :D

but seriosuly I never really got into a good position to use it as I should have.

not sure. it might just be a mistake in my notes as a couple of times i had to go back and write things down after forgetting to do it immediately.

I think it is here that the Retinue 2 goes on overwatch - I was missing this bit of info in my notes.
