Okay, enough on digging Ron for the all caps.  Some people aren't internet savvy and aren't aware of YELLING.  If it bugs you that much be a nice guy, send a PM, and explain it.  If the behavior continues after you've explained yourself then you can continue with the elitist attitudes.

Two threads where this came up and it's ticking me off.

as i can type i dont look at the screen till im done and if i had on the caps im not doing it over again so to bad for you. not all of us are classy fellows. anyway.

IN THE FIRST GAME .haha. I had to play keep away from one of those big adaptus things with a 100cm gun TK that would have ruined my day. but he sat in in the middle of the board . i sat off to one side and first turn tore up a warhound at 75cm which gave me 3 shots AT and 1 TK D3 . it worked well. turn 2 i picked one his RUSS formation. only 1 kill but set up for my crisis to come through the woods and NAIL his  RUSSes. 3rd turn crisis under the cover of the MANTA killed most and broke the RUSS formation.

SECOND GAME was against the BUGS . I hate bugs let me tell ya. BUT the manta was loaded up with drones and a crisis formation . parked it to shoot at his big titan thing (has alot of legs 8 dp ect)the manta really was in no danger cuz he couldnt get to it. the bugs dont have alot of guns to shoot at it. but the titan did nail the manta with a acid breath which hurt me for 1 dp. thats all i took the whole game though. 3rd turn i FF and destroyed a whole brood with the crisis dropped out of the manta and drones together shooin up the formation. whis i had a camera it would have been a good report.

MANTA works good just hard to use against some armies. i have played it only once before ROCKVILLE against bills drop ig army, first turn he fired all vultures and the manta took 3 dp from it but than moved in with its crisis in tow to due damage.weeeell i hope this helps it the most ive put up here ever. not big on the computer, no time

Ok, I just wanted to breath some life back into this thread. Manta comments have sort of snuck into a couple of threads and I think it's easier to deal with them here.

So this is what I am hearing so far:

1. One person is using them and they were effective against the armies he played against

2. Another person started off good, but his opponents are catching on

3. I finally got to use one and I'd give it a C+/B- on effectiveness, primarily because I was facing an army that didn't provide a lot of TK effective targets. It did just fine killing individuals. It survived an assault, but mostly because the opponent underestimated the strength of his attack.

4. I know I was nervous about the +5 deflector shield, since if I am interpreting the rules correctly, that's the only thing that gives the Manta a save against TK weaponry. Am I reading that correctly?

5. The guns worked just fine and I kept the Manta away from threats, but then Orks aren't necessarily loaded up for TK weaponry. I dominated the air, so that wasn't a factor.

6. A ML would have helped in one case, all the other shooting attacks either didn't have ML support or used Recon support.

7. I started on the board safe in the knowledge that there were no other long range TK weaponry about.

8. It looked awesome on the table.

It doesn't really seem like there's a lot to say, other than it needs a lot of testing.

Ron's a larger than life character (and I mean that in the nicest possible way Ron :)) so it's only fitting that he uses CAPS. He seems to know what he's talking about too...

Ron is a clever man occasionally.  As for playtests, I think Ron plans on bringing the Manta frequently (I hope he does since it is such a fantastic looking model) so even if he doesn't post I'll try to give some recaps for those games.  He plays around 4-6 games with Tau every month.

Well i would say you have to play crafty with the manta, unlike a warlord or reaver. they can go into a fight and win. manta has to pic at its prey. piont wise id rather have a cool fightin mach like a reaver but we dont want all the  armies to be the same right!!  I like the manta just wish it had a little more uuummmmff. its slow to move, only a couple of guns(but good ones)i would say the transport part is not practical because it would use up alot of pionts to due and all your eggs would be in a paper bag. the manta shouldnt be used up front at all. it will die, but used at range you can support your other formations with it and slice up armoured formations with itat range. Its rough to spend 700 pts on it. cuts back on good fightin formations BUT ive won more games with it than without!!! Ill keep using it for now..

I agree with a lot of Ron's point.

I find it a bit slow on the battlefield (for a spaceship).

I don't believe the transport capability is as useful as I thought it would be. The Tau really can't afford to have half the army tied up in one activation for too long (if it was fully loaded). As the Tau have been designed to win by maneuvrability and shooting, they need to be shooting from the beginning of the game with as many guns as possible.

I really believe the Manta should be FF4+. At FF5+ without Fearless, the Manta is very much a paper tiger. 700pts is a lot to pay for one 2+ Rail Cannon shot as this thing hides in the backfield.

I just had a thought whilst typing this post. Seeing as my opponents are actively seeking this thing out to assault it now, maybe I could use my Manta as the Lure for a trap... Kauyon style!

I prefer a trap, Calamari style.
