We might want to look at the impact that would have on Pathfinders.

If you had access to a ML upgrade for FWs would you still take Pathfinders?  I know that the other ML units would still have place, but I could see where that might make Pathfinders a less viable choice.

Not saying it couldn't work, but just something to be aware of as a consequence.  I am all about units having their own role after all.

However perhaps it would be ok to allow the ugprade to be 75 + 25 for fish?

Easiest option by far. It gives the tau player an option and pathfinders are still useful additions to FW formations.

Stealths only count a single slot each

Ah.  I missed that.  I thought all the suits counted double.

Actually, ONLY Crisis suits are two spaces each.  Broadsides Stands are the same 'size' as an Infantry stand, since there's only one Broadside and a couple drones per stand.

In the grand picture of looking at the whole FW + Pathfinders formation [the devilfish is] 25 points out of 300.

So maybe that's not so bad, but it galls me nonetheless.  You have to admit that it feels different leaving behind a 25 point Devilfish with real firepower compared to leaving behind disposable Rhinos.

Basically, I find it hard to justify ~50 points per infantry model (for Stealth or Pathfinders sans Devilfish) just to get MLs in a FW formation.  It seems much more cost effective to field those separately and that certainly explains why people choose the other options.

At least right now, I don't do Orca-drops, so I haven't noticed that.  I *always* included Devilfish with my Fire Warriors, so the increased cost for the Pathfinders wasn't something I paid attention to.  Besides, I want the PFs for Co-fire more than their MLs.
Onyx:If there is to be a Leader upgrade to the FW, could that unit include a ML?
So an upgrade of a Shas'ui to the FW's would give them Leader and a ML on that stand only.

The Tau codex I have here says all this is feasible. Cost would the only issue.

A minor issue with the Shas'ui is that technically there's one in every other stand (or there will be in the next Tau Codex...).  A Shas'ui is the equivalent of a human Sergeant, a Squad Leader (section leader to the Brits).  A Shas'vre is either a battlesuit team leader or a Commander's bodyguard.  My suggestion was to make a Shas'vre the Fire Warrior 'Platoon Leader,' and for fluff's sake say that it's a training step before he is promoted to Shas'El and given his own Cadre.

There's nothing wrong with the idea, other than Schmitty's point:We might want to look at the impact that would have on Pathfinders.

If you had access to a ML upgrade for FWs would you still take Pathfinders?  I know that the other ML units would still have place, but I could see where that might make Pathfinders a less viable choice.

Right now, I don't include Pathfinders as a separate formation, but only as an upgrade to FW formations for MLs and Co-fire.  I'd take the Leader upgrade to help deal with BMs whether or not it had a markerlight, but I'd definitely still take the PFs for Co-fire.

If I want a separate formation for MLs and Co-fire, that's what Tetras are for.

I am all about units having their own role after all.
Quoted for truth, but I see the role of Pathfinder infantry as Co-fire first, MLs second.
