True.

Self-planetfall is quite murky as to what Orders are allowed (A normal Planetfall doesn't count as moving, after all, so Sustained Fire is allowed there)... but then, I think it should be removed anyway (A Thunderhawk is also a capable spacecraft with very similar utility in BFG, yet doesn't have self-planetfall).

I think the Self-Planetfall was designed around the idea of vehicles that were capable of interstellar travel.  That is an attribute I don't believe the Thunderhawk or its mirrors have.

The Manta is not an interstellar craft either, AFAIK.

I checked the Lexicanum and it isn't very precise:

They were the nearest equivalent to a Human Titan or Ork Gargant. These dropships were several times larger than a Thunderhawk gunship which is capable of operating as either a skimmer or a flyer on the battlefield. In space, they were equally a match for whole squadrons of Imperial fighters. This bordered between an attack craft and a full starship. They were the smallest ship within the Tau fleet which were equipped with ether drives though this was not nearly as fast as a true starship form interstellar distances.

Cursory searches online have come up with no additional data either way.  Only one post I could find from this thread showed this:
The Tau's logical progression towards future warp travel would be to simply continue to improve their current system. They've already made enormous leaps in their field. The old Explorers traveled at a mere 1/5th the speed of the Imperium, and the drives were too bulky to be used on anything less than a capital ship. The new ones are at least 1/3rd as fast as the gue'la's, and now Mantas come equipped with limited etherdrives, allowing travel between nearby planets/orbitals. Underline added.

I seem to recall this interstellar argument coming up though when free planetfall was being worked out.

Travel between nearby planets is not interstellar, it's interplanetary.

Traveling from Earth to Mars is interplanetary.

Traveling from Earth to Alpha Centuri is interstellar.

Thanks for the head's up, Webster...

I never said interstellar and interplanetary were interchangeable terms.  I am simply citing the only examples I could find on line and pointing out that I think interstellar travel was brought up when it was being discussed.

I understand, just pointing out that if the requirement is interstellar travel, the requirement hasn't been met.

The manta is basically in the same catagory as the thunderhawk, so should be treated the same with regards to planetfall.

Not to mention that free planetfall means Mantas will ALWAYS planetfall into battle, which doesn't make much sense to me.

Well, sarcasm aside, the Manta is no more an interstellar craft than a Thunderhawk Gunship is.

Sorry, sarcasm is just my automatic reaction to a disparaging tone.  I suppose I should keep that in check...

And I'd like to see something to back up the non-interstellar status before I make any judgments, as I am sure others would as well.

AFAIK the Tau have no ships smaller than Cruiser sized (That's several KM long, heh) that can make interstellar trips.

Exchange Cruiser for Escort and you're right.

I thought even Tau escorts needed towing into the area of operations by bigger ships?

Only the Kass'l (Orca) Gunship.
The Skether'Qan (Messenger) Starship can make warp dives (but only a few before it is forced to recharge for some time).
The Kir'Qath (Defender) Starship has gravitic drives (read: warp dive capable drives)too.
