I used a Manta for the first time this evening (although I've played ~6 E:A battles with the Tau), and upon re-reading the rules before the match was surprised to learn that it can only deploy troops immediately after planetfall. This struck me as unusual since it essentially wastes the very handy transport capacity of the vehicle if you elect to begin with it on the table.

In my case, I am interested in using it as a storage vessel for a Broadside formation which is always target #1 for my opponent's Imperial Manticores if he wins first turn. Although the Manta might be a bit overcosted, the additional expense seemed worthwhile since I thought I would also be gaining first turn protection for my barrage-sensative Broadsides.

Am I reading this rule right? For those who have spent much more time thinking about these things than me, can you explain the reasoning behind why the Manta is only allowed to deploy troops immediately after planetfall?

The idea is that Support Vessels are flying so high off the battleground usually that it would be suicide to try to disembark from them. When dropping via Planetfall they come very close to the ground to drop off troops then rise to combat height. Personally I think it's silly too. We have devices now which let us deploy troops from aircraft 100-200 feet up without difficulty. Surely the Tau, with their grav-chutes and suchlike can drop them without trouble? But... I believe that's the reasoning anyway.

Tonka...

From page 14 of this thread, Ragnarok asked the same question... you can look on the page 14 for exact quotes of Tau literature on how the Manta performs. Also, if you would like my summarized quote to Ragnarok asking basically your same question, here it is...

...the abstraction for the benefit of the E:A rule system and scale meant to reflect the unit's relative impact on that front.

Although it buses armies to and from major engagements, Mantas are primarily used as heavy support gunboat battleships until the engagement concludes. After which, they either fly back to the mother ship, fly to a neighboring planet, bus the recently deployed army to another location, or they alone dispach as support to different location as support in that new theatre for another contingent (group of cadres)

Cheers,

Tactica, thanks for pointing that out. I apologize for the repeat question!

no problem. :)

Tonka, something to consider - the Orca is a fairly cost effective delivery system for your broadsides. I'd encourage you to take a look.

Cheers,

With the proposed changes to Planetfall and aircraft on the SG boards... I'd like to again put out the idea that Support Craft be allowed to enter the field as aircraft and become support craft after entering. Perhaps only when doing Planetfall operations as opposed to in general. I think it's both fluffy and interesting as a prospect.

Illusia,

I wish I had access to the SG site from work. Not quite sure what changes you are referecing.

However, unless we are confident *proposed* changes are to be applied, I'm not terribly keen on modifying our rules to align with something else that *might* be applied.

I do think it makes sense to be mindful of current as well as future states of the game that may be on the horizon. If your rule modifcation that you've revisited somehow aligns better in both versions of the rules (current state as well as proposed) then it should be entertained.

If you want CS to revist the issue, perhaps you could frame up how support craft would be impacted by your change if the new experimental rules are not adopted vs. if they are. He can then apply some risk analysis logic to determine whether your suggested modification has merit.

For now, the planetfalling support craft don't appear to be negatively impacting the game as far as I can see in my narrowed view of things from over here. :)
