My word a line of tongue in cheek got an impressive essay! :)

Large menacing craft hoovering over a city being broken by a sentinel formation was well... embarrassing! To have them never rally due to needing a 5+ because there was loitering valkyries and vultures nearby that had used all of their good toys was also a bit disheartening. Why was such a craft having such a hard time rallying... it just didn't feel right - Win lose or draw.

Its a factor/feature of the game. A formation of Baneblades are in the same boat. A warlord is rallying on a 4+ there and  Great Gargant is in trouble.

...perhaps that's just the American in me, but I really like the control and the 'trick' factor that airpower delivers...

Your lists do remind me of US-type forces. ?I'd say your style was very influenced by US-type doctrine.

Just a thought.. do you ever run completely different lists? Ork horde, SM drop etc. ?I ask because otherwise it becomes easier to metagame against you.

The pattern I have seen so far is: 1x WE formation, 2x MBT formations, 1x Mech Inf, 2x Support/Arty, 1x Fighter.

PS This is NOT critism, just brain-storming.

Cw,

That's true, that's my typical Tau Army make up. I'll have to pay more attention to what I field, but I think you probably have me figured out. :)~

In test, I play all kinds of configurations though. I've tried heavy suit lists with infantry support. I've tried all armor too. Neither work that well though all armor works better than all suits and infantry for me.

As far as what I personally enjoy as a fun list - I think you have me figured out when it comes to Tau though. That said, my compositions of formations do change. I also adjust my playstyle to the field and adversary accordingly.

Now, orks - yeah, completely different list - very horde. I've ran WE heavy lists here and had mixed successes. I just like the orc list. there's so many combinations of possibilities in that list frankly.

Marines, I've taken all strike forces before and prefer that mode outside of some tac squads perhaps. Marines are my least favorite to play of all lists.

Chaos - very infantry heavy typically and lots of daemons. WE, tanks and fliers are only splashed in - in even the biggest games.

IG - I typically run one mech infantry for SC, one infantry on foot, LRMBT co, vultures, valkyries, 1-2 artillery manticores, 1 hydra, and 1 thunderbolt as staple. It points are available, next is the shadowsword co. then more flak batteries and mauraders. Then roughriders and upgrades to the above.

I guess i definitely have patternistic style of play when playing for fun. In test, I tend to mix it up quite a bit though.

Cheers,

Tactica, I do think your "pattern" is quite optimal.  Produces solid lists every time.  I like to theorise and I was thinking "how would I deal with that situation" (the situation being facing a tough style of army like yours) and the biggest weakness I could fathom was the possible predictability.  But you seem to play plenty of other lists, so that should prevent too much of that .

I think most people have a pattern, or tend to pick up one as time goes on.  As people will tend to stick with what works, and drop stuff that didnt work for them.  Its something we could all use reminding of from time to time.

As a side note I think that the IG have become better under the current metagame.  As they have the tools/tricks to deal with some of the new armies that the SM and to a lesser extent the orks do not.

Cw,

I think we all 'size up the competition' with our own lists in mind. That's a good thing IMHO.

Its good 'mental practice' to consider how your list would fair in similiar circumstances, so I encourage anyone to do that. If you can't honestly say you could give either posted list a run for their money with your list that you like to field, maybe that's telling. If there's a glaring weakness - good time to say, "what about this..."

Side note understood btw: IG have become a very staple army that just works well. Its like a perfect tool in many cases and can be the list to beat. Eldar seem to be the only trump card. They seem to solve the same problems, give some armor to the troops, have neater gadgetry and tricks, and deal with BM better. They more than compensate for their weaker average vehicle armor IMHO.

To test a list... I think you need to take a 2700 a 3500 and a 4500 point version of your list against three really good Orc lists first, then Black Legion, then IG, then Eldar players at the noted point levels. 12 games in all.

Batreps of these 12 games should be quite telling as to the effectiveness of the player and of the tested list.

heh, but who has the time for that! :)

Cheers,

Tactica, yeah, if only I/we/anyone had the time and opportunity to playtest like that!  Maybe in 20-30 years time there will be a multitude of epic-pensioners with the time :p

Agree about the Eldar... full bag of tricks, annoying pansy space-elfs
