I would like to make clear that what I propose is intended to increase the mobility of the Tau.

Yes, there are 2-3 units/formations that are going to sit on OW early on.  But the reason they do that is so that the rest of your army can move.  Because they have some protection from enemy assaults from the OW/ML/GM synergy.

Read the batreps.  Once the terminators were on the board and/or there weren't Thunderhawks full of Marines waiting to pounce I was able to move my formations fairly freely (when they activated).  In both games against Marines I had an attempt at a turn 3 blitz grab (successfully once and the second time getting hit with the full air assault).  I used co-ordinated fire in 2 out of 3 games and there was even the odd crossfire.

Guys, please note that I was merely querying whether the hit-&-run rule might be considered for Tau tanks (not replacing the Jet-packs). Combined with a reduction in their weapon ranges this would provide a means of toning down the 'gun-line' style of play, without removing it altogether.

clausewitz, I do applaud your adventurous style of play, but the point is that you did not have to move off the base-line, which is the whole critism leveled against the 'gun-line' style of play. This proposal would encourage more mobility from those units in the rear

If the tau don't move they won't ever win a game Ginger, unless you as the opponent place the objectives badly.

Having played Clausewitz on more than one ocaison I've never felt I've been facing a static gunline, rather a balanced and well thought out army that is acting togehter to maximise their strengths with a plan to win the game.

Indeed, without moving you don't ML anything and can't shoot your GMs.  Besides you do need to claim objectives in EA, or you would loose every time.

Ginger, Hit-and-run on Hammerheads is an interesting idea, but I get the feeling that too many people will think it too Eldar-ish.  Not that I personally object to the concept.  Though what happens to units added as upgrades to the Hammerheads? (or do they all get removed?)

If the hit and run approach were to be looked at I'd just give it as a general rule and let them all have it. Then you can shoot up formations and retreat to safety. You could rename the rule remove the full move in assault consolidation if that offends too many people, but seeing as the tau really aren't going to be looking to assault I don't see it as a massive game breaker myself.

@Ginger,

Just so we don't spend a lot of time on this, I'm not in favor of dropping gun ranges on tanks and then giving them Hit and Run. That is a distinctly Eldar capability. Tau is big guns and long range.
