I think markerlights work ok at the moment, the problem is just that it's too easy to markerlight the enemy, thanks to the cheap turrets/drones etc.

Make markerlights rarer (FW only?), and they become a tactical challenge to use.

My point exactly - thus adding the element of attacking / defending the turrets / infantry which have the means to call in devastating long range support provided they are not broken (when such communications are deemed to have failed etc).

Elsewhere I did suggest reducing the robotic element to Remote Turrets and infantry for precisely the reason you state Zombocrom, though if this approach is adopted, it would need to be carefully balanced.

As dangerous as it is to mix RL and GW, the real reason for someone on the ground to paint a target for strafing attacks is to say 'shoot HERE!'.  There was an incident recently where a vehicle was engaged at night at a firing range here in the States.  Fortunately, the guys in the 'Burban survived the event, but the target the pilot was supposed to be shooting was actually lit by another pilot.  I haven't seen Transformers, but usually people mark targets for laserguided munitions (bombs or missiles)

In 40k, under the 4e/Tau Empire codex, Markerlights help every attack, and don't just guide in GMs.  I can mark a target and strip off your cover save, put my attacks up to BS5, and give you negatives to your Pinning check (if I've got enough marker hits on that unit, which isn't necessarily hard with a big Pathfinder unit).

In all honesty, I prefer just letting Markerlights (as a 'weapon' in Epic) guide in GMs.  Keep it Simple, right?

Skyrays have networked Markerlights in Wh40k so that it can use them by itself.

With the one shot right behind the driver´s door and a couple just zipping over the fuel tank, those guys were extremely lucky!

Yeah, they need to give their Guardian Angels some time off (can't give the poor guys a raise, after all).

I like the interaction that MLs force between different units, but there's gotta be a less contentious way to get the same effect.
