Tau are my second epic army and looking at the army list i do have a simple question. When I add a character to a formation in my Space Marine army, one stand in that squad becomes a character. In the Tau list, crisis suits are listed as 4 suits and one leader. Does that mean the squad is 4 stands with one of those designated leader or is it a total of 5 stands for the formation?

I liken them to wargear in 40k. So 4 stands, one of which has a leader.

Generally speaking when you look at the units profile it says CH for type and is missing a stat line (Arm,CC,FF) then its added to a stand and the formation size is the same as the number of the standard units. If it has its own statline then its an intependant unit and likely in addition to the standard units.

We should clean that shit up. And add the CH into the units stat as it is not a purchasable option.

As others say, all ‘Characters’ replace one figure on a single base or unit (or occasionally get added to a single vehicle eg commissars). As such, they enhance the capabilities of the unit with their own abilities. This principle applies to all races and armies.

In the case of the Tau crisis formation, you get four units for 250 points, one of which contains the Shas’el character. For an additional +75 points you may replace the Shas’el character with the Shas’o Supreme commander in one such formation.
