I played a few games with them now and personally I don't enjoy there play style.

It doesn't help that I have never liked the Tau as a 40k race (yes I'm a 40k racist).

I have $$$ worth of tau painted to a great standard that I really don't want.

Sorry to hear that dubhgilla. That's an exceptional looking army, I can't imagine you'd be enthusiastic to let it go.

Have you tried using it with the Vior'la Tau list yet? You might need to proxy a few models like Riptides to get the full effect, but I have a sneaking suspicion that if what you're after is a Tau army that can perform in a more offensive manner it might be what you're looking for.

I use my Orca with a Skyray Turret on top. I just blu-tack it on so I can remove it when I use my Orca as an Orca :)

GW Orca? I'm probably going to use the Hedgehog APC from Reaper. Maybe they have something that can work.

I saw a very good white+blue colour scheme for tau, but can not find it back. i am wondering how to paint mine and want to see options. Anyone remember that army perhaps?

It's a pity Onslaught's grav tanks aren't scaled up to produce an Orca size vehicle

Yeah I think you may be right. I've had a look at the list and the inclusion of more Macro will help.

I know I need to get more cross fires for the Tau to work but my regular opponent is no fool and wised up to that fast. Assault is so powerful (rightly so) in this game that I feel the official list lacks the needed punch against reinforced armour.

I'll try this list before I even think about selling.

Rumours have the suit railgun being reduced to S8, AP2; I wonder whether this could translate to the Hammerhead Railgun (apparently retitled the 'Railcannon') being upgraded to being AT3+, as it would no longer be restricted by the usual Epic conventions of being related to the twin-linked Railguns on the Broadside?

I've seen quite a few notes that the Hammerheads aren't performing quite as well as players would like, so this might be an opportunity to upgrade them. A formation of six with this upgrade would be more closely comparable to the Leman Russ tanks, which are the obvious comparison – the HH having worse AP and no reinforced armour, but being faster, ignoring terrain and having a deeper AT bite.

The issue with players reporting that Hammerheads under-performing goes back years, and it's one of the things I am least satisfied with in the Vior'la list. The problem there is that I don't want to improve them above the 3rd Phase Tau list they are based on because the goal is to provide a list that is 'different' rather than 'better' and improving such an important unit would definitely go against that concept.

What I am considering doing is creating a detailed analysis of the broadside vs its peers to see if there is actually a genuine problem or just a perception issue. If it's genuine I would be willing to slow down the process of getting Vior'la approved in order to use it as a test-case for an adjusted statline, with the idea being to see of Yme-Loc is willing to eventually consider incorporating it in the main list as well if it should be successful.

To reference your specific example, the Leman Russ is the ultimate generalist tank, survivable and good against vehicles and infantry alike, while also being extremely good in firefights (RA, 4+, Commissar, outnumber). The Hammerhead is supposedly a dedicated Vehicle killer, based on one of 40K's ultimate tank-killing tanks.
Despite that, it takes an average of 8 shots from Hammerhead Railguns to kill a Leman Russ, and 4 shots from Leman Russ Battlecannons to kill a Hammerhead.

The way to fix HH IMO is to fix the rail gun. At the moment the problem as I see it is the range of the rail gun. At 75cm it can cover a vast swath of the playing surface thereby reducing the importance of the HH's speed and skimmer abilities. It is rare that a broadside suit has no worthwhile target to shoot at. By reducing the range of the rail gun the speed difference may matter more. At the moment in the context of the Tau list the survivability/accuracy of the broadside suit is worth more in game terms than the speed/flexibility of the HH.

It should be noted however that I have put very little thought about the effect of this idea on a largely finished list. Just that I think this is a way in which to solve the problem.
