Got in a single game of EPIC this holiday weekend matching Tau with Marines, at 2500 points.  I played the Tau and wanted to try out one of the Broadsides proposals.  More details to come tomorrow!

Totally sorry about not even posting army lists and such for my teaser!  *laugh*  After the game, my girlfriend called up and asked if I wanted to come over for hot coffee... and how could I refuse?  *laugh*

Rules Used

All experimental rules (except air rules)
Tau 4.4 with changes

Broadside Changes:

Type: LV
Speed: 15 cm
Armour: 4+
Firefight: 5+
Close combat: 6+

Weapons:
Twin-linked Railgun - 75 cm AT2+
Secondary Weapon - 30 cm AP4+ (or something like it)

Notes:
Reinforced Armour, Walker. Takes 1 space in Orca.

1) Cost changes (+/-25 points)

Setup

4x4 table
Marines chose edge deployment.

Garrisons and Deployment

Marines kept the Assault and Devastator Detachments off-board loaded in the Thunderhawk and the Terminators in reserve for teleport.

Tau kept the Sentry Markerlight Drones in reserve.

Marines placed both Land Speeder Detachments in cover and on overwatch.

Tau placed both Broadside Contingents in cover and on overwatch and Crisis Cadre 2 garrisoned forward of the Tau Blitz, in cover.

Turn 1

No teleports.

Strategy roll: Marines

The standoff breaks as Speeder Detachment 2 drops its overwatch and sustains fire on the nearby Broadside Contingent 2, but only manages to place a single Blast marker.

The Stingray contingent advances, popping up to shower Speeder Detachment 1 with missile, dropping 2 Typhoons.

With a roar like a lion, the Thunderhawk descends from the clouds, shrugging off the fire of the Stingray's Skyray, and dropping the Assault and Devastator Detachments on Broadside Contingent 2 for a massive ground assault.  The overwatch fire of the Broadsides is startlingly ineffective, and despite the support of the Stingrays and holding out for two rounds of combat the XV88s are wiped out, taking only 2 Assault Marines with them!

Crisis Cadre 2 jumps forward on an advance and fires on the Devastators? scoring few hits, but managing to kill the Librarian!

Speeder Detachment 1 advances on the Broadsides, who don't firing on overwatch, and manage to take down 1 Broadside. (I'll just make a note here: this was the first time my opponent or I had really used Typhoons in any quantity and it wasn't until after the game was over we recalled they had a Heavy Bolter as well as their Typhoon Missile Launchers!  So, the Typhoons were only operating at a little over half capacity, and it might have changed things in the end?)

Vindicator Detachment 1 revs up to take on Broadside Contingent 1, but gets bogged down and they only regroup, trying to figure out what went wrong.

The Piranhas sustain fire on the landed and marked Thunderhawk, but only manage to place a single Blast marker.

Vindicator Detachment 2 doubles up the Marine left flank and fires a long range shot at Crisis Cadre 2, placing a single Blast marker.

The Shas'O leads Crisis Cadre 2 forward on a double to hammer Speeder Detachment 2, destroying 3 Typhoons and sending the survivors fleeing.

The Armoured Mobile Hunter Cadre lifts up out of the ruins and doubles towards Vindicator Detachment 1 and completely obliterates the Marine tanks leaving none behind.

Broadside Contingent 1 elects to stay on overwatch?

End of Turn: Speeder Detachment 2 and the Assault Marines fail to rally for the Marines, while the Stingrays fail to rally for the Tau.

Turn 2

Terminators and Sentry Drones all teleport into the thick of the battle!


Strategy roll: Marines

Catching the Stingrays in a crossfire, the Terminators sustain fire on the Tau tanks, completely wiping them out.

Vindicator Detachment 2 then advances on Crisis Cadre 2 and takes out 2 Piranhas.

Crisis Cadre 2 jumps away to advance on the Terminators, taking out 1 on the heavily armoured Marine units.

Crisis Cadre 1 jumps back to help as well, advancing on the Terminators, catching them in a relatively ineffective crossfire? and places a single Blast marker.


The Devastators fail to get a sustain fire lock on Crisis Cadre 1 and their sporadic fire places only 1 Blast marker on the Crisis suits.

The Piranhas advance and launch Seeker Missiles at the marked Vindicator Detachment 2 and take out 2 Vindicators.

Broadside Contingent 1 tries to advance out of the woods, but fails and just shoots at long range on Speeder Detachment 1, taking out 1 Typhoon.

The battered Assault Detachment catches Crisis Cadre 2 with an engage move, taking out 1 Stealth Suit and 1 Tetra, but being slain in the process? the depth of the ruins protects the Tau from any support fire, but they are covered in Blast markers.

The battered Speeder 1 Detachment advances on Crisis Cadre 2, the explosions of their missiles doing just enough to break the Tau Battlesuits.

The AMHC doubles to spread itself over Marine Objective 1 and the Marine Blitz and manages to wipe out Speeder Detachment 2 in the process.

The landed Thunderhawk sustains fire on Crisis Cadre 1, taking out 1 team of Crisis suits?

End of Turn: All formations except Crisis Cadre 2 manage to rally for both sides.

The Terminator Detachment then advances out of cover to catch Crisis Cadre 2 in a crossfire and takes out 2 Crisis suit teams and the Shas'El's team as well!

Crisis Cadre 1 advances to help their beleaguered friends and fires on the Terminator Detachment, taking out 2 Terminators and breaking the Marines.  The surviving Chaplain manages to find the 1.2cm x 5cm area that isn't within 15cm of Tau units and survives?


Vindicator Detachment 2 doubles to contest Marine Objective 1 and destroys 1 Hammerhead of the AMHC.

The Devastators advance to fire on the Piranhas, but only place 1 Blast marker.

Rattled by the nearby Marines, the Piranhas fail to advance and fire ineffectively on the landed Thunderhawk.

The Thunderhawk then sustains fire on the Sentry Drones, taking out 1 Drone.

The AMHC advances, repositioning itself to reclaim Marine Objective 1 and maintaining their hold on the Marine Blitz, their Railguns take out 1 Vindicator.

Broadside Contingent 1 gets into the fray by doubling up a hill toward Vindicator Detachment 2 and manages to take out the remainder of the Marine formation?

End of Turn: Marines 0 (none) vs Tau 2 (Blitz, T-n-H)

At six units, garrisoned Broadsides make a fairly effective area denial formation.  I'd certainly take them at 250 points.

LV status didn't really hurt them and they didn't move that much after deployment so were, generally, always in cover.

On a double they're still hitting tanks on a 3+, and since armour is rarely moved *in* to cover, moving 30cm usually gives them a good field of fire.

I think I'm going to try deploying even more next time, try some kind of almost-all-battlesuits army.

Nice Report,

regarding the BS : As I posted in the BS thread , I field them regardless of them beeing LV or not, as the Tau have plenty of similar Long Range AT Fire Power they tend to survive much longer than their Tank Counterparts, I think they are not so intimidating as a Hammerhead, but the opponents who don?t know them come to a rude awakening when the BS fire. So , again I think 250 Points are not enough for a 6 Stand strong formation. Just my 2 Cents.

Chroma, the Epic translation of my 40k Crisis horde is Crisis+Shas'o (350), Crisis+Shas'el (300), and Firewarriors+Broadsides (350).
