Neal,
don't worry too much because "What people play in 40K" has never been the end of all Epic for us here. WPPI40K is definitely a starting point, or a scope showing what is feasible and what is out of character.
Personaly I don't think that the SMS on the devilfish is out of character. It's just one of the two weapon configs available in 40K.
Now in Epic scale, the main reason to choose SMS over Gun drones is the 30 cm range...
...which is only available when using that weapon config,
...and which happens to be the same range as pulse rifles thus complementing the transported units shooting pretty well (For the record, all we do here is applying the same reasoning to the Devilfish and the transported Firewarriors).
Tactica
1) Apply change of adding SMS to all DF.
2) Lower all SMS to AP5+, Ignore Cover
3) Test Changes for a time
4) Review points on the various units with SMS as necessary AFTER putting the changes to test.
I'm eager to put this change to playtest:
- Impacts positively the not so popular Firewarrior cadre.
- Impacts negatively the very popular Hammerhead cadre.

As it ties directly to the FW unit as an upgrade to the FW unit, its quite relivent for consideration.
We cannot buy DF by themselves afterall.
They come with PF or FW... and there are pages of the conversation on the DF with FW here together already, probably would be in approapriate and disjointed to move it at this point.
Perhaps CS could edit the title to FW + DF as that would be an easier change.

Just a random thought that might be an option depening how playtesting comes out - should the FW units become too expensive with the improved Devilfish stats, perhaps have 'upgrade to Warfish' as an option which reflects 40K's targetting array + SMS devilfish compared to the standard transport.
Whilst it is quite a good option, given that in 40K they are non-scoring units and the TA+SMS option is almost half their points again it might not be as universal as some people might find.
As an upgrade to a formations devilfish might allow you to both decrease the lowest cost of the FW detachments (possibly by reducing the unupgraded devilfish's burstcannon which lacks its TA) for objective grabbing units and have a more powerful long range fire fight orientated unit (as if its a simple upgrade for a formation, it would be more favourable to max sized units).
