Ok, I'm getting the feeling that we're using two different equations and wondering where the other's answer came from.  :p

So, is this about the Orca specifically, or is it the Orca and the standard TS? If so, then I understand, where you are coming from as I thought from earlier exchanges we were talking about fighters (and specifically Tau fighters) as cheap activations.

If we are talking about Orcas, I recognize your issue.  Tactically it seems questionable to me and I wonder how viable a list it allows one, but that's what needs to be playtested.

I realize you are stress testing the list, but some times I have to wonder whether a person playing that way is that desperate to win. I think our games locally are very focused, but more oriented to the fun side of gaming...and we aren't to a point where  we'd do a tournament, much less consider one.

Different cups of tea, as they say.

But really, I think you are missing the point and focusing too narrowly on activation count.

It's not the number of starting activations that matters. ?Every army has activatiion padding,

NH- I was aiming at the issue of TRC's (in the quote). It seems to be his focus and biggest worry. I thought I'd just remind him (and others) that the Tau "air problem" is a red herring. Things like this seem to be bogging us down. I don't mind healthy discussion, but I prefer to keep things where they really belong - on track and not running off on irrelevant (well seemingly to me anyway)tangents.

I understand the issue with the Orca, hence my clarification "obj. grab and weaponry aside".

Not trying to be argumentative here Neal, just want to clarify what my post was about so there's no "electronic misunderstanding". ?:;):

I note from reading all the past air posts that all those that have never seen any problem with the aircraft are those who report them getting shot down a lot, whereas those that do complain seem to have them fly a lot more. Either the former fly in an environment with a third of the enemies points have AA or the latter are better at using them, or something in between.

As Neal says better than me these ctivations survive and remain effective. No-one worries abot sentinels - you can kill them easily enough. But limit what can effect them, hell up thier armour as well and all of a sudden they are better.

With the exception of Barracuda who sit a bit below the Eldar (but till outstrip the Imperials and Orks in a big way) all the Tau air formations are availible in flexible small cheap packets. Whats more they have comparable firepwoer but better survivability.

Take a TS (firing at marked target and no MW shot) compared to your thunderbolts.
TS (average hits)
45cm 2/3AP, 1/3AT or 1AT
30cm 1/3AT
15cm 1/2AP

2 TB (average hits)
30cm 2/3AP, 1AT or 1 1/3AT
15cm 1AP

Ignoring the ability to shoot at beyond flak range the plane is nigh the same at 30cm with the thunderbolts having a slight edge at point blank AP though lower armour to get there, not to mention the TS's single weapon systems are better at hitting targets in cover.
Its almost twice as survivable and trades mediocre interception ability for drone transport.
The orca is an excellent 100 points. You can claim contest an objective unopposed, its an activation that will most likely survive. With 45cm just lay a blastmarker to wind people up. Hell you could land it to block LoS or as a roadblock! Carrying troops is a secondary ability!

For the Tau flexibility seems to mean high activation count and this causes problems with the air rules.
