NH,

I'm not sure if this is a general question or a question just to CS...

Has the presence of a Swordfish actually ever significantly changed your tactical decisions with respect to a HH formation?

I'm not trying to be argumentative, but "significantly" is a relative term to me. I don't know how to quantify that in this case - so I'm just going to take a general approach to my response.

Has it changed my tactical decision - yes. Does it 'always' change my tactical decision in a game - absolutely not. There are situations where it does and has become a factor in some of my previous games.

If you are looking for some examples of my personal experiences, off the top of my head from battles where I can think of them impacting my decision...

1) If I have the Swordfish, I'm more confident to attempt to take out a SHT or heavier AT formation with them as I have more of a reliable resolve with the AT increases and the added misslepods at 45cm should I move forward - or find the enemy very close to my lines!

2) In some circumstances, the Swordfish is a bit liberating in that it allows me to feel like I can 'go mobile' as the double movement 'to hit' penalty doesn't hurt as bad with the additional and better AT shots. Therefore in this movement case, I care less about seekers and limiting myself to single moves with the formation as I still have some other shots I can reasonably rely upon.

With the regular rail-heads (no swordfish), I tend to sit back and pepper with pop-up, taking less risk and trying to make use of the seekers more. I don't want to move more than a single move with the formation if I can avoid it. In this role, they are the Stingray - but for vehicles.

MY HISTORIC EXPERIENCE / OPINION: Historically, the 25-50 point upgrade (1-2 units) is not the best way to utilize the points in army construction. I've taken lists with several heavy hammerhead formations and the 125 points for 2 hammerheads + 50 points = 175 points for 2 swordfish was too expensive in every case I came across in the past. I look forward to trying out the new reduction for upgrade as you are still paying the initial 125 points for the base 2 vehicles. Another 25 points + upgrade slot for the formation or 150 for the two Swordfish looks much more appropriate.

OPINION: As there is a price to upgrade not only in points but also in upgrade slot - and not to mention from current playtests, I still don't think you'll 'always' see 'all' tau players taking the upgrade all the time, however, I do expect there to be more than just people taking the unit. Hopefully people like the upgrade and consider it justifiable in their lists now.

POSTULATING: Now if the Swordfish was a free upgrade (like the vanquisher is to the IG Leman Russ Company) then yes - I could see the possibility of most Tau players always upgrading their vehicles. Luckily - its not free and also uses up an upgrade slot for the formation. :)

Guess time will tell.

OK, here is the way forward on this. I will go with the upgrade as set out in the initial post here. However, I will add the Swordfish re-evaluation to the agenda for future work (do you get the impression that I have a lot of meetings in my job?).

This will get wider feedback on the change with a Vault version of the list, and we can then discuss further ramifications at leisure.

OK?

I take them always, they are kind of standard to me. I like to see the face of my opponent when he sees them on the table , and asks me "Why does this one have two guns?" , "It?s because I can eat you better with two guns" :8:

Cheers!
Steele

OK. Topic closed. Resolution (currently) is -

Change the Swordfish upgrade to:

Replace up to two Hammerhead Gunships with Swordfish (the same points are paid even if the player selects to only upgrade one Hammerhead); +25 points

With a view to examining the role and details of the unit at a later time.

Thanks.
