Post subject: | Engine War |
Played a game over the bank holiday weekend using the AMTL list – in fact, an Engine War, as my friend also played a titan list. My list Warlord 1 (725) + Carapace Turbo laser destructors (+30 x 2), Gatling blaster (+25) and Volcano Cannon (+50). Veteran Princeps (+25) – 885 Reaver 1 (575) + 3 x Apocalypse Rocket Launcher (+25 x 3, +25 for mono-fit weaponry). Legate (+50) – 725 Reaver 2 (575) + Apocalypse Rocket Launcher (+25), Volcano cannon (+50) and Gatling Blaster (+25). Veteran Princeps (+25) – 700 Reaver 3 (575) + Apocalypse Rocket Launcher (+25), Turbo-laser destructors (+35 x 2). Veteran Princeps (+25) – 695 Reaver 4 (575) + Apocalypse Rocket Launcher (+25), Inferno gun (free), Chainfist (+25). Veteran Princeps (+25), Sacred Icon (+50) – 700 Reaver 5 (575) + Apocalypse Rocket Launcher (+25), Turbo-laser destructor (+35), power fist (+25). Veteran Princeps (+25) – 685[/list] 4390 His list: Imperator (1250) with Legate (+50) – 1300 Warlord 1 (725) + Carapace Turbo laser destructors (+30 x 2), Gatling blaster (+25) and Volcano Cannon (+50) – 860 Warlord 2 (725) + Carapace Turbo laser destructors (+30 x 2), Gatling blaster (+25) and Volcano Cannon (+50) – 860 Warlord 3 (725) + Apocalypse Rocket launcher (+25 x 2), Gatling blaster (+25) and Volcano Cannon (+50) – 850 Warhound (275) + Vulcan megabolter (free) and plasma blastgun (free) – 275 Warhound 2 (275) + Vulcan megabolter (free) and plasma blastgun (free) – 275 4420 +++ The game worked very nicely, and ended with my Reaver 3 staggering away smoking, the rest of the list vapourised. In return, I'd bagged both Warhounds and felled the Imperator (by ganging up on it with three Reavers). Overall, it was a very enjoyable game, and despite the apparent disparity in success (he had three Warlords left to my single Reaver), I think I'd put that down to a good plan on his part, and my concentration on grabbing the Break Their Spirit. My Reaver with a close combat weapon and Sacred Item was very unlucky not to bring down the Imperator in turn two. Anyway, thought these rather unusual lists might offer some insight. Happy to answer any questions, and apologies for the rather vague nature of the report. |

I'd love to see a photo of an Engine War that big! |

Afraid they wouldn't be very inspiring, model-wise, as Legio Validus is currently undergoing an extensive repaint after their travels from Closette and the island moon deBay... However, once they're all painted up, I'm sure I'll be able to get some action shots. We're big fans of Engine Wars – I've got one lined up this Thursday against an Eldar Titan Clan. |

How did the Imperator do? It looks nasty on paper but I often wonder if it's worth the points sink. Are carapace turbo lasers cheaper? I notice that the warlords are paying 30 and the reavers 35, could just be a copy/paste error though. |

Quote: How did the Imperator do? It looks nasty on paper but I often wonder if it's worth the points sink. In turn two, it performed an Advance and turned its fire on Reaver 3. Even without its Plasma Annihilator (it had fired the previous turn), it removed all of the Reaver's shields and caused four Damage Capacity at long range. Obviously this is only based on one game's experience, so take it with a pinch of salt, but I think it could do with a bit of a boost. Two Reavers were able to tackle it, break it, and keep harrying it until it finally collapsed. Given free reign, it would be able to flatten a fully-shielded, undamaged Reaver in one turn's firing, but in practise, I don't think that's going to come up too often unless you play with very little cover. Were I to play with or against it again, I think I might give it the Devotional Bell upgrade for free, which I think is really characterful and neatly illustrates the morale-damaging effect of a walking Cathedral opening up at your army. ![]() It was also fairly simple to hug cover to avoid it – as long as you have two Titans/formations hunting it, it can't afford to go after one, or it risks being crossfire. We did think that giving it one indirect-fire weapon would have ameliorated that effect – it's not enough to encourage you to hide the Imperator, but it does help it against being ganged-up on. If I were to play an engine war game I think I'd introduce some height rules to cover terrain so not all terrain would block LOS but give them cover. The Imperator should be really hard to hide sliding down to warhound's being really easy. |

Luckily we've got plenty of terrain for Engine Wars, ranging from knee-height to twice the height of an Imperator ![]() We were fairly generous with cover – the size and shape of the bases prevents you ducking into nooks, but we tend to regard the big circles as showing where the model might be. |
