It was actually Zzap that scoured the old sources for it (and typed it all in), not me.

I'll be getting a game in this weekend. Right now I'm leaning towards playing Knights.

Interesting (re-reading) that Knight Fluff from WD. Most of it's good but I still don't see knights as a 'rediscovery' from feral worlds - anachronisms. I still see them as very current and modern. Indeed I actually see them being developed and coming into history much after the age of strife and during the beginnings of the imperium onwards. The I suppose the knight suit technology itself must have been pretty ancient.
And I hate the dinosoaur stuff too. Apart from that it's all good

I think the idea of the societies being pre-imperium comes out of the fact that these guys live on the very periphery of the astronomicon (the psychic beacon in the warp used by imperial navigators). ?The knightworlds remain the same in 40,000 as they were discovered in 30,000 (or whenever) because Imperial influence is so low. This is also why these guys have to fend for themselves more often than not - they are not always accessible by warp-travel.
I think originally, these guys had the same niche as the Border Princes did in WH Fantasy.
That's how I interpretted it, anyway.

That may be how GW saw it, but I never really agreed with them. I think they made a mistake. In a medieval world, knights are prevailent and current - everywhere, on (almost) every planet and modern. But i'm going over stuff i've argued before.
Imperial Govonors, Barons must go to war when called in payment for their fiefs. Some go personally, some 'sub fief' to knights and their houses. Others perhaps may be a bit more modern and provide weapons of war or other materials. Some yet may be really 'futuristic' and pay in the form of simple cash taxes!
Obviously, the guys we're interested in here are those that pay Knight Service
