I voted two.
I think that the support weapons (or specialised weapons) should have a particular focus at which they excel (a volcanoes cannon anti WE ability, MRL suppression ability etc) where as the core weapons are more general in their use. They are designed to just pump out masses of low grade fire to soften up enemy units.
In my mind there are only 4 core weapons:
Gatling cannons, the blandest of all weapons, doing everything on 4s but still fun to arm a warlord with 4 of them.
VMB & TLD. Variations on the gatling cannon, being slightly more biased towards shooting either infantry or AV, and really loves shooting light vehicles.
The last core weapon is the (titan) plasma cannon. This baby has a slower rate of fire but more kick than the gatling cannon, much more useful for taking out high armour or low RA targets.
All the other weapons are specialised, each one designed to do a specific task but loses out on versatility.
The volcano cannon to take out WE, the inferno cannon to light the princeps? cigar. MRL to law down a barrage of hurt, quake cannons to make it a bigger hurt. Plasma destructors, to do something once we decided what it is they do, and so on.

voted 2 as well...
I definately see the support weapons as a more powerful weapon than the GBs, TLDs and VMBs but they are also have some drawbacks.
