Well, I decided to field Tyranids this time and another player brought Marines.

Not sure I'll be able to post this all tonight, but I'll start!  *laugh*

Turn 1

No Teleports

Strategy Roll: Marines

The Whirlwinds start things off by sustaining fire on the Nexus Swarm? killing a Biovore.

The Warhounds then advance and lay into the Nexus Swarm with everything they've got, taking out 3 Carnifex and 1 Tyranid Warrior? oh oh!

Hierophant 2 bellows and double towards the Warhounds, dropping a single Void Shield.

The Land Raiders double on the Nexus and take out 2 Zoanthropes, throwing the swarm into confusion.

Tactical 1 hesistates, but then doubles down the road to place a Blast marker on the Nexus swarm.

Hierophant 2 doubles up into the midst of the Nexus Swarm and takes out 2 Scouts as well.

Assault Swarm 1 doubles forward as well, but not far enough, and fires on the Land Raider to no effect.

The Scouts then move forward to engage the Nexus Swarm, its overwatch fire missing completely.  The Marines have Tactical 1 in support and the Tyranids have Hierophant 1.

The Scouts are wiped out, but not before the brave Librarian macro-weapon snipes the Hive Tyrant and his companions snipe the last Tyranid Warrior, forcing the rest of the swarm to go to ground? *SIGH*

The Devastators advance and pour fire into Hierophant 1 doing 2DC damage.

Assault Swarm 2 marches towards the Tyranid flank, stopping 31cm from any enemy units.

The Tactical HQ mounts up and double down the road to fire on Hierophant 1, driving it to instinctive behaviour as it is cut off from the Hive Mind.

Assault Swarm 3 marches towards the middle of the battlefield, stopping 31cm from any enemy units.

The Assault Detachment marches right into the heart of the Tyranid army, getting all three swarms up close and personal?

End of Turn:

All Marine formations rally.

Hierophant 1 regenerates 1DC.

Assault Swarm 1 uses a spore to spawn 1 Zoanthrope.

Assault Swarm 2 uses a spore to spawn? 1 Zoanthrope.

Assault Swarm 3 uses a spore to generate 2 spawn points? which get them nothing!

Turn 2

The Lictor Swarm shows up on the Black Rock to harass the Devastators and the Whirlwinds.  Stubbing a claw on a sharp rock, the Lictors suffer 1 Blast marker on arrival.

Strategy Roll: Marines

The Assault Marines engage Hierophant 1 in a kamikaze charge! ?They use the bulk of the great beast to shield themselves from support fire.

Two Marines are torn apart, but the inspiring litany of the Chaplain allow them to win by "1"? which criticals? and kills the massive creature! ?(UNBELIEVABLE!)

The Warhounds then sustain fire on Assault Swarm 1, shredding 3 Raveners, 2 Gargoyles, 2 Termagants, and 1 Hormagaunt, laying an incredible 9 Blast markers!

Assault Swarm 3 doubles to fire on Tactical 1, placing a Blast marker.

Assault Swarm 2 closes the trap, flowing forward to engage Tactical 1 with the support of Swarm 3. ?The Marines have the Assault Detachment in support, and Tactical HQ and the Land Raiders in support range of one enemy unit.

The battle rages for two rounds. ?The Tyranids lose 4 Raveners, 5 Hormagaunts, and 3 Gargoyles while the Marines lose 5 Tactical Units, including the Librarian, 1 Rhino and 1 Vindicator? it's close, but the Marines win by "2", taking out 2 Termagants as the Tyranids back off. ?The Marines are very close to breaking?

The Devastators advance away from the Lictors and them blow two of them away.

The Land Raiders advance on Hierophant 2 and do 1DC damage.

The Hierophant advances on the Land Raiders and the bio-cannons actually manage to destroy two of the heavy Marine tanks!

The battered Assault Swarm 1 engages the intermingled Land Raiders and Warhounds with the support of Hierophant 2? and manage to do no damage at all? three shame faced Tyranid Warriors are all that survive to slink away?

The Whirlwinds advance away from the confused, but still annoying, Lictor and fire on Assault Swarm 3 killing 2 each of Gargoyles, Hormagaunts, and Termagants!

The lone Lictor holds its position in cover.

Also badly battered, Tactical 1 advances on Assault Swarm 3 another puts another Blast marker on them.

Tactical HQ then engages the befuddled Swarm 3 with support from Tactical 1. ?The Marines kill 2 Raveners and 1 Gargoyle, but lose 2 Rhinos. ?The Bugs win by "1", breaking both Tactical formations and feeding on all the nearby corpses?

End of Turn:

All Marine formations rally.

Hierophant 1 regenerates 1DC.

Assault Swarm 1 fails to spawn.

Assault Swarm 2 uses a spore to spawn? 3 Termagants.

Assault Swarm 3 uses a spore to bring back 5 Hormagaunts.

Turn 3

No teleports.

Strategy Roll: Marines

The Land Raiders sustain fire on Hieroplant 2 doing 1DC damage.

The Warhounds are unsure what to do, but the Supreme Commander straightens them out and they sustain fire on Assault Swarm 3 talking out 5 Hormagaunts, 2 Raveners, 2 Termagants, and 1 Tyranid Warrior and reducing the rest of the swarm to a quivering wreck.

The remains of Assault Swarm 3 hold and move towards Tactical 1.

Hierophant 2 engages the intermingled Land Raiders and Warhounds.  The gargantuan creature claws 2DC off Warhound 2 and also takes apart a Land Raider while the Imperial forces do 2DC back? a moment passes, and then the Bio-Titan crashes to the ground, dead as doorknobs. (Marines win by "1".)

The Whirlwinds sustain fire on Assault Swarm 3 killing 2 Hormagaunts and a Ravener.

The Assault Marine survivors, feeling proud, engage Assault Swarm 3!
They wind up
killing 1 Hormagaunt and 1 Tyranid Warrior, but get wiped out in return!

Assault Swarm 1 doubles on Tactical 1 and puts a Blast marker on them.

Tactical 1 moves towards Tyranid Objective 2 and gets enough shots on Assault Swarm 3 to wipe it out.

The Devastators advance and slaughter the last Lictor.

Assault Swarm 2 doubles onto the Marine portion of the battlefield and fires futilely at the last Land Raider.

Tactical HQ advances on Assault Swarm 2, but only places a Blast marker?

End of Turn:

The last Land Raider fails to rally.

Assault Swarm 1 uses a spore to spawn 1 Carnifex and 1 Termagant.

Assault Swarm 2 uses a spore to spawn 2 Raveners.

Score

Marines 1 (BTS) vs Tyranids 0 (none)

Turn 4

No teleports.

Strategy Roll: Marines

The Warhounds sustain fire on Assault Swarm 2 and kill 3 Termagants, 1 Ravener, and 1 Warrior.

The Whirlwinds sustain fire on Assault Swarm 1? and only manage to place a Blast marker!

Assault Swarm 1 gets down and dirty, engaging Tactical 1 even though they have the Devastators in support range.

They lose a Warrior and a Hormagaunt, but annihilate the Marine formation.

The Devastators solidify their hold on the Tyranid objective by sustaining fire on Assault Swarm 1, taking out another Warrior and driving them mindless.

Somewhat confused, Assault Swarm 2 still manages to move onto the Marine portion of the battlefield.

The Tactical HQ marches, spreading out to take the Tyranid Blitz?

End of Turn:

All Marines rally.

Assault Swarm 1 uses a spore to spawn 1 Carnifex and 1 Termagant.

Assault Swarm 2 uses a spore to spawn 1 Carnifex and 2 Termagants.

Score

Marines 3 (BTS, Blitz, T-n-H) vs Tyranids 1 (BTS)

Wow!

After turn 1 I thought the bugs were going to get a hammering but they proved more resilient than I had expected. I guess the clearing of BM each end phase coupled with spawning kept them chuggin' along.

What are your first impressions Chroma? It looked exciting and fun from the report.

I'll give my opponent's response first: "Wow, it was like the Tyranids were actually playing EPIC!  That was fun!"

*laugh*

Despite the beating, I enjoyed it as well... more playtesting is definitely needed!

Welcome to my world... :)

For the record I dislike the lack of fearless on hierophants, also I am worried about just how weakened these bio-titans have become. They are really big models - perhaps they just go up in points or not be downgraded quite so much?

I can't wait to get a game in this weekend.

I tend to share the concern over the bio-titans. I don't think they were overly powerful before. The problems were more game mechanics, which Chroma's new rules might be fixing.

More testing for sure.

I would really hesitate very much on lowering the cost of phants below the 275 and 375. As these numbers act as very nice limit on taking them to 3k force. I don't think that they should be changed at all from 7.X DC amounts. As the unstoppable change has effect on them as well.

I would agree for now. May change my mind after playing.

I'm not sure why there is such resistance to fearless on the Hierophant, it's the only "Titan-class" unit in the entire game without it... and it's a fricking Bio-Titan!  *laugh*

With the current relentless rule, it might not be so bad, but I'd like to see it played as is for now.

As to the size/DC; well, in the Imperial Armour books it's got 3 "Mass Points" and 5 wounds... that usually translates to around 3-4DC.  It is the "scout" Bio-Titan, I'd say, and compares relatively favourably with the Warhound at 250 points.
