Another batrep from our group?s ongoing campaign (the Battle for Khorma IX).

This battle is from the fourth campaign turn and was fought in April at Orkybob?s house. My bugs are in big trouble after a long march through the desert at the heart of the continent and in an act of uncanny cunning Orkybob has ambushed my overstretched bug army with one of his full strength Ork armies led by none other than the mighty Ork Warboss ?Sordid? Bobskull Gorkmeister.

Warboss Bobskull has yet to lead his boyz to a single victory despite many attempts and despreately needs to win to restore some faith with his boyz. For this battle, as a result of their march across the desert, my bugs were fighting with only 90% of Bobskull?s points (2430 vs 2700). Surely this was Bobskull?s best chance ever of notching up his first ever win.

The campaign location we were fighting is called ?Paratha Flats?, a 6 x 4 battlefield with no terrain features allowed! This location also has a special rule called ?Dust Storms?. Basically at the beginning of each game turn (before teleports and strategy) one of the players rolls a d6 ? on a 5 or 6 there is a dust storm for the coming turn.

The effect of a dust storm is to reduce all infantry?s movement by 5cm and to cause a ?1 to hit modifier on all ranged shooting over 15cm. In addition, the campaign weather is currently at its worst with ?Outrageiously Violent Storms? ripping across the whole continent. This meant that any aircraft would have an activation modifier of ?1 and would pick up 1 automatic BM for every turn they activate if there was no dust storm and would be grounded if there was a dust storm. With this in mind Bobskull decided the flyboyz could have the day off and I decided to take no AA whatsoever.

I fielded the following using army using 7.3.1.

Orkbob?s full strength Ork field army looked like this:

1 Gargant with 2 Soopagunz and 1 Mega Choppa (Warboss Bobskull at the controls)

1 BigWarband with 2 Battlefortress

1 Big Kult of Speed

1 Big Blitz Brigade (gunwagonz) plus 2 oddboyz (supergunz)

1 Normal Kult of Speed

1 Normal Warband + 4 battlewagonz

1 Blitz Brigade with oddboy (super-zzap)

7 activatations, 2690 points


Objective placement and Deployment:

With a featureless battlefield Orkybob chose to fight across the table in a normal fashion. Orkybob placed the Ork baseline objective dead centre on his baseline, I placed the bug one slightly to my left about 2ft from the corner.

The remaining 4 objectives were placed fairly evenly near the centre line, for the batrep I will number them 1 to 4 from the bug left to right.



The Bugs deployed as follows (bug left to right)

Assault swarm 1 (with Haruspex), Harridan 1 (brown), Assault swarm 2 (with Malefactor), Hydraphant, Assault swarm 3 (with Haruspex), Harridan 2 (Red)


The Orks deployed as follows (Ork right to left)

Big Kult of Speed, Big Warband (in fortresses), Gargant, Blitz Brigade with Normal Warband behind, Kult of Speed and Big Blitz Brigade.

Turn 1:

Dust Storm roll outcome?yep we have DUST STORMS!!

Garrisons: None.

Teleports: None (Lictors and LSN remain off table)

Strategy: Orks ? Passed to Nids

1. Keen to get to grips with the filthy greenskins, Swarm 3 marches straight towards the Ork line and objective 3 ? note that because of the dust storms this meant they only moved 30cm! Damn this storm!
2. Seeing bugs approaching through the clouds of dust the Big Blitz Brigade doubles forward and fires at Swarm 3 - killing 2 Termagaunts.
3. Keen to press the battle Swarm 2 marches forward to draw alongside Swarm 3 placing themselves in the bug centre.
4. Bobskull?s plan is clear ? he intends to pick off my swarms one by one - his normal warband doubles forward and with boyz spilling out of their battlewagonz and fires at Swarm 3 ? most shots fly side of the mark but a single termagaunt stand is wiped out.
5. Fearlessly Swarm 1 marches through the storm up to the same line as Swarms 2 and 3 to form a solid front.
6. Bobskull?s Big Warband doubles forward and unloads its boyz and predictably opens up on poor little Swarm 3 killing another 2 stands of termagaunts.
7. The Hydraphant decides its time to inflict some pain back and doubles forward with a roar firing upon the Ork normal warband. With dust in his eyes his misses but a single blast marker is placed. The hydraphant however is in a wonderful position to both support and assault some greenskins next turn.
8. The Orks now switch focus from swarm 3 to the new threat and the normal Blitz Brigade advances towards the hydraphant and fires ? the dust interferes with their already pitiful accuracy and all shots fly wide of the sizable target.
9. On the Nid right Harridan 2 advances forward towards objective 3 and opens up on the Big Blitz Brigade ? again the dust storms cause havoc with aim and all shots miss ? another single BM is placed.
10. Warboss Bobskull decides he needs a closer look at the action and advances his mighty gargant towards the nid line, through the dust he can just about make out the outline of the massive hydraphant and orders all weapons to fire at the biotitan. Not a single shot lands much to the amusement of all.



11. Back on the Nid left, Harridan 1 doubles forward and opens fire at the Big Warband ? again no hits land but a single BM is placed.
12. The Ork Big Kult of Speed revs up its engines and roars towards Harridan 1 all guns a?blazing ? need I tell you that no hits land?
13. The normal Kult of Speed doubles forward to get near the action but are not in range to fire after their move.



Turn 1 casualties: 5 termagaunts.

End Phase:

The big warband and the big blitz brigade both rally, the normal warband does not.
Swarm 3 uses a spore to spawn back all 5 termagaunts.

We decided to hit the beer at this point in the hope that turn 2 will prove more eventful.

Turn 2

Dust Storm Roll: NO DUST STORM.

Teleports: The LSN burbles into life behind the ork baseline objective (an office block)

Strategy: Orks.

1. The big blitz brigade has Harridan 2 in range so is ordered to sustain fire at the flapping beastie infliciting 2 points of damage (no criticals).
2. Retaining the Ork Big Warband doubles forward towards the bleeding Harridan and opens fire finishing the job and killing the monster. One gargoyle crawls free from the harridan?s carcass.
3. Right! now its getting nasty and swarm 3 launches an assault at the ork normal warband. The fight is swift and the mob is wiped out for the loss of a single termagaunt ? now this is more like it!
4. Carrying on in the same vein the normal blitz brigade advances towards Harridan 1 and hits once ? trouble is it?s a TK hit and it causes a fatal critical!! This time all the gargoyles being transported are killed too.
5. The hydraphant is terribly confused by all this action and decides its best just to shuffle around a bit (hold & move) ? nothing is in range to shoot at so he just keeps close to swam 3.
6. Warboss Bobskull curses when he realises the hydraphant has just shuffled out of range and orders his gargant to sustain fire at swarm 3 instead who are still feasting on the bodies of the warband. The gargant crew look at him as if he?s speaking some funny language like Eldar ? a few heads care cracked and the grots get the message. Swarm 3 is blasted losing 3 termagaunts.
7. The lonely gargoyle from harridan 2 flaps over to join swam 3.
8. With a disgusting belch of smoke, the big kult of speed roars towards swarm 3 and fires but fail to land any hits.
9. Swarm 1 sweeps over from the bug left to help out swarm 3, the tyranid warriors fire ther venom cannons into the big kult of speed placing a blast marker but causing no damage.
10. The normal kult of speed decides that the lesser synapse node needs to be destroyed before it has a chance to spawn so doubles back towards the Ork baseline objective and fires at the little node. Thankfully the tough skin of the node manages to shrug off the incoming fire.
11. Swarm 2 now sweeps into the buildings of objective 2 and assaults the nearby big kult of speed in a firefight. The orks are desperatley unlucky and lose badly. 5 of the kult die in the main assault for the loss of a single gaunt and a further 7 of the kult are shot down as they break and turn to run.



Turn 2 End Phase.

The gargant and the big kult of speed fail to rally.
The Lesser Synapse node spawns 4 gargoyles with the help of a spore.
Swarm 2 spawns 2 gargoyles and a termagaunt as does swarm 1.

Turn 3.

Dust Storm Roll: NO DUST STORMS!

Teleports: The Lictors appear inside objective 3 (the low building complex on the bug right just inside the Ork half).



Strategy ? Orks

1. The normal Kult of Speed starts the turn by assaulting the Lesser Synapse Node swarm in an attempt to clear and secure the Ork baseline objective. The Node and gargoyles are wiped out in the assault giving the Orks the BTS objective for the loss of a single Ork biker.



2. Retaining, the Ork Big Blitz Brigade doubles towards Swarm 3 and fires killing 2 termagaunts.
3. The Hydraphant spies the approaching Big Blitz Brigade and stomps over towards them firing and breathing for all he?s worth. A single blast marker is placed but the bio-titan is in support fire range so the bugs try to retain?.
4. ?with success! Swarm 3 launches itself in a wild assault against the mighty Ork Big Blitz Brigade. The fighting is brutal but the Support fire swings it and the bugs wipe out the entire Brigade.



5. Out on the bug right the Ork Big Warband advances towards objective 3 and the resident Lictors. After firing all their weapons 2 of the Lictors are blown apart.
6. The bugs march swarm 2 over towards objective 3 and the lictors to ensure that the objective will remain contested come the end of the turn.
7. In the Ork centre Warboss Bobskull in his Gargant attempts to march forwards but again the noise of the battle means that his crew can?t understand him! Yet more heads are bashed and eventually the Gargants guns blaze into life hitting swarm 1 and killing 1 gargoyle, 1 tyranid warrior and 3 termagaunts.





8. The hive mind orders the battered swarm 1 to pull back towards the bug baseline objective.
9. The ork Blitz Brigade fail to activate and just drive around a bit (can?t remember where but it was generally towards the action).
10. Finally the remaining Lictors march away from objective 2 and back  towards objective 1.



Turn 3 End Phase:

Rallies:
For the Orks the Kult of Speed and the Gargant rally.
Only Swarm 1 manages to spawn and with a spore gets back 6 termagaunts.

At this point the Orks are winning 1-0 (BTS).

Turn 4.

Dust Storm Roll: NO DUST STORMS!!

Strategy: Orks again!

1. The Ork Big Mob doubles away from objective 3 to surround and take objective 4 on the far Ork right.
2. Swarm 2 doubles forward and fires at the remains of the Kult of Speed placing a single blast marker only.
3. In the centre the Gargant tries to destroy the 2 Lictors who are in the open between objective 3 and 2. The gargant doubles forward and fires but the aim is typically off and all shots miss.
4. The lictors don?t hang about and double into the safety of the office block that is objective 2.
5. Orkybob realises that the battle is heading towards a countback and decides it is worth trying to take out as many bugs as possible. The normal Kult of Speed doubles forward towards objective 2 and fires at the lictors killing one.
6. I decide that Orky has it right and my hydraphant rushes towards the kult of speed and takes out 2 skorchas with its bio-plasmic ?bad? breath.
7. The hydraphant is now the target as the blitz brigade hurtles forward into range of the bio-titan. Firing will all its worth the brigade inflicts 1 point of damage on the beast ? which causes a critical! Thankfully for me the effect is just to cause another point of damage ? the beast lives.
8. Suddenly Orkybob realises he has made his only major gaff of the game! His intact blitz brigade has just moved itself into assault range of swarm 1. Swarm 1 wastes no time in assaulting the brigade and wipes the entire formation out for no loss!
9. The last action of the turn sees the remains of swarm 2 march back to hold the bug baseline objective.









Turn 4 End Phase.

Rallies:

The Gargant and the Kult of Speed both rally.
Swarm 2 spawns 6 gaunts using a spore.

The score is still only 1 ? 0 to the Orks so we roll to see if we go to turn 5?.which we don?t. Countback time.

The countback is tense as this is a campaign battle there can be no draws! Even a 5 point margin at this stage will grant a victory?

The countback needs a recount as it is so close?.it comes out as ..wait for it?.1250 to the Orks and 1240 to the bugs! The Orks win by 10 points on countback.

With the lack of terrain, I was pretty sure the Tyranids were going to get mopped up pretty easily!

I thought the same to be honest! Basically the only cover to be had was in the form of the objectives themselves so the battle split into two scraps over the middle 2 objectives with both sides easily holding their far left hand ones and their baselines.

Thankfully the Orks couldn't hit a barn door for love nor money so my bugs got away with being out the open.

I will think twice about fielding 2 Harridans again with no cover. Pretty dumb choices with hindsight and gifted the Orks the BTS condition.

Just two questions

1)  Does the gaming board have built in hills, or are my eyes going crazy?

2)  Is Chroma really worth fighting for? :D

I think the "hills" are an illusion produced by the various coloured swirls on the board; I to thought it was low rolling hills at first!

2) ?Is Chroma really worth fighting for? :DMy fiance says she thinks I'm worth it... if only I could get her to play EPIC! ?*laugh*

And they're fighting over "Khorma", delicious, saucy, chicken khorma! ?*laugh* ?I love Indian food... and I'd probably fight ya for it!
