Post subject:  [Batrep 3K] 7.3.1 Nids vs Guard

Time for a quick game today.  Nids vs Guard 3K.

Current Nids rules with Zoanthrope modification (30cm AP4, MW FF5+), (plus AA gargoyles but opponent had no planes).

Tyranid List:
Nexus, 6 zoanthropes, 2 carnis, 1 gagoyle
Tyrant, 4 carnis, 1 gargoyle
GSN, 4 dactylis, 2 gargoyles
Hydraphant
Harridan, 4 gargoyles
Warriors, lots of gaunts
Warriors, lots of gaunts
Warriors, lots of gaunts
(total of about 40 termis, 10 gargoyles, 10 hormis)




Guard:
Infantry Company, ogryns, support
Infantry Company, ogryns, support
Infantry Company, support
Mech Infantry Company.
Leman Russ
Manticores
Basilisks
Hydras
Roughriders

Setup and Turn 1:

Guard choose a diagonal setup. Dispositions should be reasonably clear from the pic below. The tyranid tyrants and their swarms garrison, as do the guard roughriders and infantry companies.



The guard win the SR, and launch an assault with the Roughriders against the Nexus Swarm!! Despite hitting a number of the zoanthropes, the roughriders are wiped out without causing a single casualty. The guard manticores then bombard the nexus swarm killing the tyrant and two zoanthropes.

The tyranids advance on the guard lines, the guard shoot them up a little. The leman russ go on overwatch.

Turn 2:

Guard win SR again. The mech infantry company falls back and shoots up the nexus swarm, and infantry company guarding the guard blitz sustains fire on them also.

The Harridan shoots up the manticores killing two of them, and advancing to support range of the guard blitz. The tyrant orders a combined assault with the survivors of the nexus swarm, which kills most of the guard infantry company guarding the guard blitz.

The guard Leman Russ double to shoot the Hydraphant, inflicting 6 hits but no damage. The hydraphant engages the guard in the buildings ahead of it, killing 3 stands, but taking 2 damage and losing the combat, but being fearless just advances further into the guard lines...

The rest of the tyranids continue to advance, while the guard shoot them up as best as they are able.

Turn 3:

The two guard infantry companies shoot up the swarm nearest the hydraphant, killing all the warriors and leaving just a gargoyle and two termis.

The tyranids respond by engaging the extended guard infantry with the next closest warrior swarm - both sides lose 6 stands, and the guard infantry break and fall back.  (Note this could have been a disastrous intermingling result for the guard here, but local players play the 'no intermingling unless intermingled formations are in engage range' house rule).

The Harridan swarm moves and fires at the basilisks destroying one of them, and breaking the formation. The guard respond by opening fire on the Harridan with the hydras, doing a single point of damage.  The manticore fires at the tyrant swarm but kills nothing.

The dactylis bombard the mech infantry, killing 4 of them.  The Leman Russ fail their activation test and just advance. The mech infantry fire at the nearest warrior swarm, and are then engaged and broken by the Hydraphant (which had regenerated completely last turn).  The remaining guard company fires but has no effect.

The last tyranid swarm tries to march and fails but is just in range with a normal move to make sure that all 3 tyranid table half objectives are held. Together with the guard blitz, that gives game to the nids 2-0.



Conclusion:

Ok so a newish guard player (only 3 or so games of EA, though many of old versions back to SM), who needed to put some more distance between his units and the bugs (move and fire rather than sustain). Both sides were also hurt by the lack of a SC. Also the hydraphant was basically impervious to the weaponary available to the guard.

Zoanthropes used their MW attacks a few times and really helped out in the first few assaults they were in.

Sorry for brevity of report, life really busy right now.

In the grand scheme of things it makes little difference I think. I did manage to get a carnifex instead of a gaunt though...  :blush:  Only fair seeing as my gutless tyrant died first hit again...  :;):

Thanks, though to be honest I'm just happy that the number of local epic players is increasing  :)   Another player bought along the first of his feral orks painted up today, meant to take some pics but forgot.

Looking at running a small tourni (8 or so players) this year if the rules review is finalised.
