Well, looks like it's about one game a week in the Red Queen Rising campaign, got in the third installment today.

An "Assault" mission (thanks Miles!) with the Imperial Guard defending against a wave of Tyranids...

Escalation - Prologue

? ? The rain hammered down, drumming a steady, almost maddening, beat on the reinforced plasticrete of the bunker and the peals of thunder outside sounded out like the guns of the Emperor's greatest army. ?Lieutenant Milos Harmes knew that the sun should be shining outside, the rainy season was still a month away, but someone had set the clocks ahead. ?Well, maybe some thing had? though he hated to think that the xenos creatures that had built their nests in the valleys north of the Taakanar Ridge could affect the weather in this way. ?The thought of fighting an enemy that could do something that? unnatural, disturbed him deeply. ?Perhaps it was only coincidence. ?

? ? The Nomad Marines' strikes against the infesting aliens had slowed the creatures' advance somewhat, but it hadn't stopped them. ?Colonel Smyke had ordered an armoured cordon to be placed around the valleys in an attempt to contain the threat so servitors and automated manufacturing units had constructed a defensive line of trenches, bunkers, pillboxes and razorwire. Now Harmes, his men, and many other platoons held the positions, kilometres and kilometres of them, waiting for the invaders to make another move. ?

? ? He knew he was ready for whatever the aliens could throw at him; around him was the might of the Imperial Guard: tanks, cannons, and soldiers ready to kill and die for the Emperor, but, still, it was frustrating to have to wait for the enemy to make the first move and to have no idea what it would be. ?The atmospheric disturbances had made orbital auguries imprecise and no surveillance aircraft had returned from any mission into the valleys to report on the xenos's activities. ?What were the damn things waiting for?

? ? ?Feeling the need to stretch his legs, the Lieutenant put on his rain hood and stepped out into the downpour. ?Flashes of lightning illuminated the land around him; he could see the wind-whipped trees on the Ridge and the muddy torn-up farmland below. ?No crops would be harvested from those fields. ?He walked past some of his men, snapped back their salutes and made his way to the entrenched Hellhounds, their engines idling and the stench of promethium thick in the air despite the wind. ?As he approached the flame tanks a gust of wind nearly tipped him over and he momentarily braced himself against the side of one of the rumbling tanks before quickly withdrawing his hand in disgust. ?He'd touched something? soft.

? ? Something dark and velvety was? growing, on the armoured plates of the Hellhound, small patches slowly peeling away the paint and corroding the metal beneath. ?Even through his glove, Harmes had felt a horrible warmth emanating from the substance, a malignant heat that nearly turned his stomach. ?It was something in the rain, something the xenos had put in the rain? and it was falling everywhere. ?He felt his gorge rising, but a brilliant flash of lightning drew his attention to something even more horrible; hideous creatures were moving through the trees, coming closer. ?He ran for the bunker.

? ? "Captain, they're coming, they're coming!"

? ? ?Something moved with a terrible fluid grace near the bunker, something taller than a man, something with far too many limbs and joints. ?Harmes froze as he felt himself caught by its strange, speckled eyes. ?For a moment the thing froze as well, but then it shifted away into the darkened rain, leaving him behind as if he was too small a threat to be dealt with.

? ? They were here?

I'm confused. ?You say no titans were allowed, but you took a heirophant.

A Hierophant is a *Bio-Titan*; if you read the other reports, it's been pretty specific about what we've allowed or not allowed in the "Restrictions" part.

That's silly semantics, I think. Better to say then that Imperials cannot take titans. I was confused about that as well :D.

Ah, okay, I added a little note in the "Restrictions" section about that.  *laugh*

I guess we considered the distinction of Titan and Bio-Titan as significant as the Titan Legions are a distinct "branch" of the military in the Imperium and aren't present on all worlds at all times (the next Imperial Guard mission will see the Titan restriction lifted) while Bio-Titans are just a "natural" growth of Tyranids and not some other organization.

Sorry for the confusion!

Forget the apologies - get on with the report! I want to know what happened to Lieutenant Harmes... :;):

'Tis okay.  I thought you were not allowing titans becuase the battle wasn't big enough for them to appear.

Beneath the attention of the ad mech and the nids hadn't had time to grow them yet.

Battlefield

Deployment

Imperial Guard placed eight Concealment markers and then proceeded to deploy everything, except the Tank Company, revealed in trenches, bunkers and dug-in. ?Each bunker contained four infantry units and had two "on top" as well. ?(I was somewhat surprised that my opponent hadn't used the Concealment markers to hide his infantry? but he said he had a cunning plan? as well as four minefields out there? *laugh*)

Tyranids kept both Lictor Swarms and one Infiltration Swarm in reserve, deploying the Genestealers in a forward position and the remaining gribblies as shown:

Turn 1

Preliminary bombardment has no effect.

Both Lictor swarms show up, one each in the buildings near each Artillery Battery.

Strategy Roll: Tyranids (automatic)

Silently stalking forward, Lictor Swarm 1 engages Artillery Battery 1? at least they try to, as Concealment marker 4 is revealed to be a minefield which obliterates 1 Lictor. ?Another of the lanky beasts is caught up in razorwire and the last one fails to score any hits and is gunned down by the somewhat startled gun crews? startled to be alive after being charged by Lictors! (What an ignoble way to start the battle!)

Feeling a disturbance in the Hive Mind, Lesser Node 1 sustains fire with its Dactylis, dropping spores on Bunker 1, the Infantry Company 2 and the edge of the Infantry 4. ?The Bunker suffers 1DC damage and Company 2 loses a Guardsman and Blast markers are sprinkled liberally.

Forewarned of the nearby xenos (The Infantry HQ was within the Lictor's ZoC) by Lieutenant Harmes, the Infantry Captain orders the HQ to engage the Lictors in a firefight. ?The thunder drowns out the command and something seems to be jamming the comm-link, so nervous troopers just move away from the nearby spooks. (Okay, that kind of made up for Lictor 1's terrible showing? the old "snake-eye" Initiative re-roll!)

Lictor Swarm 2 jumps forward to slash Artillery Battery 2, but they too stumble into a minefield as Concealment marker 5 is revealed. ?*TWO* Lictors are blown to bits, but the survivor hits home, tearing open 1 Basilisk, and causing another to crash as the Imperials flee. ?The last Lictor hunkers down in the mud with its snack.

Attack Swarm 1 attempts to march forward, but fails, and makes a single move through the mud.

Artillery Company 1 performs some counter-battery fire, sustaining on Lesser Node 1 and kills a Dactylis.

Attack Swarm 2 also tries to march, also fails, and also makes a single move up and over the Ridge into cover. ?(*SIGH*)

Seeing the enemy slowly making its way forward, Infantry Company 2 goes on overwatch.

Assault Swarm 2 marches forward into the cover of some ruins, spreading out and feeling sneaky? until Concealment marker 8 is revealed to be the camouflaged Tank Company which opens fire on the xenos, blasting apart 1 Gargoyle, 2 Hormagaunts, 1 Ravener, 1 Termagant, and a Zoanthrope. (Tricksy humans!)

Infantry Company 3 attempts to sustain fire on the last Lictor, but the rain hampers their targeting, though their massed firepower manages to dispatch the beast.

The Harridan doubles forward? and finds the Tank Company just out of range. (Momentarily forgot the 40cm maximum LOS in the rain? DOH!)

The Genestealers scramble forward? no mines! and engage the Tank Company. ?Three Leman Russ are torn open, but, with the support of Infantry Company 3, the tankers manage to shred the Bugs.

Its bellows echoing the thunder, the Hierophant marches forward, eager for battle.

Assault Swarm 1 also marches forward, grabbing cover in ruins, and triggering Company 2's overwatch fire which takes out 2 Hormagants and a Ravener.

End of Turn

All Imperial formations rally, though there are still some Blast markers out there.

Lesser Node 1 regains a Dactylis.

Attack Swarm 1 spawns a Zoanthrope.

Attack Swarm 2 produces 2 Gargoyles, 2 Gargoyles, and 1 Termagant.

Assault Swarm 1 produces 2 Hormagaunts and a Ravener.

While Assault Swarm 2 fails to spawn.

Turn 2

No teleports.

Strategy Roll: Imperial Guard (on a tie)

The Commissar of the Tank Company orders his men to sustain fire on the Hierophant and they manage to do 3DC of damage to the raging beast.

Infantry Company 3 tries to do the same, sustaining fire, but the creature's think scales prevent any damage.

Roaring in rage, the Hierophant engages the Tank Company, barging into their midst. Even with the support of Company 3, no damage is done to the Bio-Titan. Russes are crushed like cans, crews abandon their tanks, and only the Commissar in his Vanquisher retains his wits to fall back away from the horror in the rain. (WOOT! ?That may be the first time a Bio-titan of mine has survived to do *anything*, let alone trash nine Leman Russ!)

The sole Basilisk of Battery 2 sustains fire on the Lesser Node, killing the newly hatched Dactylis, and making the Node feel sad.

Battery 2 sustains fire on the distant Hierophant, doing another DC of damage.

Assault Swarm 2, with the support of the Bio-titan, charges the entrenched Infantry Company 3. ?It is a complete debacle? for the Tyranids as, overall, they lose 2 Gargoyles, 3 Hormagants, 3 Raveners and 3 Termagants while managing to kill a single, yes, A SINGLE, Guardsman stand! ?The Tyranids are soundly repulsed. (That 4+ Fortification save is awesome for Guard!)

Infantry Company 2 goes onto overwatch again, daring the Tyranids to come closer.

Infantry HQ makes a slight lateral advance to fire on Assault Swarm 2 to no effect.

The Lesser Node attempts to sustain fire, but it is still too sad over its losses and just quietly sobs, its tears mixing with the rain.

The Harridan tries to double, but the stormy weather disorients it and it and its Trygon only move forward.

Attack Swarm 2 doubles towards the taunting Company 2, who hold their fire, but lose 1 Support squad to Tyranid fire.

Assault Swarm 1 leaps forward to engage Company 2, discovering another minefield as a Gargoyle is blown up when it lands. ?Overwatch fire kills another Gargoyle, 2 Hormagaunts and an incredible 4 Raveners. ?The Guardsmen fight like daemons (My opponent rolled 3 "6"s for the CC attacks of based guardsmen, and I, of course, failed my saves!) and again repulse the Tyranids who lose a Biovore, 2 Hormagaunts, 2 Raveners, and 6 Termagants!

Attack Swarm 2 tries to double forward, but is still bogged down by the mud and makes a single move?

End of Turn

Infantry Company 2 fails to rally for the Imperials.

The Hierophant regenerates 1DC

Lesser Node 1 respawns its favoured Dactylis.

The Harridan produces a Gargoyle and a Ravener.

Attack Swarm 1 spawns 2 Gargoyles and 2 Raveners (giving them to Assault Swarm 1).

And the remaining Synapse creatures fail to spawn.

Turn 3

No teleports.

Strategy Roll: Imperial Guard

Commissar Marez orders his Vanquisher crew to sustain fire on the Hierophant, but the attack has no effect.

Inspired by their victory, Company 3 also sustains fire on the Bio-Titan, doing 1DC damage.

Feeling protective of its big cousin, the Harridan tries to advance, but only manages to move forward, blocking some of the lines of sight to the bleeding Hierophant.

Artillery Company 1 sustains fire on the Hierophant to no effect.

Artillery Company 2 sustains fire on the Lesser Node, but it has learned its lesson and no Dactylis are harmed.

Confused and hurt, the Hierophant foregoes charging into the enemy and, instead, sustains fire with its Bio-plasmic breath, roasting 1 Guardsman unit and the Commander of Company 3!

Attack Swarm 1 advances on Company 2, killing 2 Guardsmen.

Company 2 is forced to advance back into coherency and fires on Assault Swarm 1, killing a Termagaunt and a Zoanthrope.

Infantry HQ goes onto overwatch.

Node 1 sustains fire on Company 2, corroding 1 Hellhound and disabling 3 Guardsmen, while placing a whopping 6 Blast markers!

Hungry, but wary, Assault Swarm 1 sustains fire on Company 2, instead of engaging, and the fire is enough to break the Guardsmen who fall back, sticking to cover.

Attack Swarm 2 fails, again, to advance, but squeezes off one Biovore shot on Infantry Company 2, killing 2 Suppor Squads.

Assault Swarm 2 advances on Company 3, lurking around the nearby war engines, and kills 1 Guardsman.

End of Turn

Infantry HQ fails to rally while other the other Guard units succeeed.

The Hierophant is invigorated as it regenerates 3DC!

Attack 2 produces some Brood creatures as does Assault 1, but all other spawning attempts fail.
