I've played a lot of games with Tyranids through all the different versions, and used a wide mix of Common broods.  With the changes to the 'Gaunts in 7.1, I've seen no reason to take Hormagaunts or Termagants anymore.

I'm speaking specifically of giving them both 20cm movement.  Since they can no longer be garrisoned, they are, most likely, going to have to be marched a turn or two to get anywhere and that means getting shot at and *that* means dying.  Why not just spend the points on Gargoyle and Raveners so you get a chance at a save?  Certainly mass of numbers is a consideration, but, without saves, and the reduction in spawning, you're not going to often be more than doubling your opponents anymore.

Of course, there's always cover to try and hide in, but, when Tyranids make an assault, they lose that benefit and die in droves, the lack of saves just racking up points for the enemy's resolution.  I'd rather have a Ravener there, taking the hit and negating it 50% of the time than losing Gaunts.  This has particularly shown itself a problem vs Eldar or Necrons, both armies that can generate a lot of FF attacks.

As it now stands, I only take 'Gaunts if I don't have enough Gargoyles or Raveners to fill out my Common brood alotment.  

So, what am I missing?

Hmmm... can you take or do you have a picture of what one of these large 'gaunt swarms looks like deployed Hena?  That would be something like 1/3 of your army at 3000 points (the usual point level we play around here) in those two formations.

Clustered around Tyranid Warriors (I assume) would make a nice big barrage target to me as well as being vulerable to modified clipping assaults.  Certainly attacking an enemy formationt that has Blast markers means you're +4 on resolution before any attacks are made, and that's great!  The thing is, every hit your opponent makes is +1 for them... and that can add up fast.  I guess I'd just like the saves.  How much of your 'Gaunt swarm usually makes it to the enemy for its first assault?

Two swarms of 15 Raveners would be nothing to sneeze at either!
