I was playing around building an army list today (as you do) and during this venture I "built" a Bio Artillery Swarm.  1 Tyrant, 5 dactylis and 5 exocrine, a whooping 850opts but bloody deverstating, with 5 disrupt BP (plus indirect fire) and 10 MW5+ ignore cover (or possible 10 AP something AT something lance ignore cover), oh and a venom cannon.

Nice and deadly and swarmy to boot.  Then I realised that it would be useless for the first turn or two.  :O  The short ranged exocrine are too fast to allow the swarm to garrison.  Thus they have to march around for a while, or hope that the enemy comes to them.

So it got me wondering, why are they speed 20?  It can't be to get them into range sooner, since the only synpase creatures that can keep up with them are the fast WE, which they will slow down, and have different roles.

I could never see a harridan or vituperator taking one on a haressment mission and the dominatrix is a close assult beast not one to sit back and shoot..

The Dactylis is artillery support, long ranged, and is supposed to sit back in the rear areas and fire from there. While the Exocrine is designed for working within and supporting the front line swarms. The same applies to the Biovore, it works from within a front line swarm.

As for the Exocrines 20cm move, it makes it easier for it to shift firing points within the swarm, something a number of local players have come to appreciate. Also it allows them to move up into close support range in many assaults.

Thanks All...............

Oh I am finally back from that out in the middle of nowhere job I was on.

Jaldon :p
