Here's something I was thinking about the other day while reading up on the 'Nids: they co-opt the biological potential of the planet, almost from the get-go, so that even "normal" plants and stuff are a potential danger.  I thought up the following special rule:

[b]Tyranoforming:[b]
When Tyranids lay seige to a planet, they start at a cellular level, infecting local fauna and floral with viruses, spores, and fungus, altering the very nature of a planet's ecosystem.  Once serene woodlands become the home of twisted parodies of the original denizens.  Roots and vines take on lives of their own, grasping and clinging to non-Tyranid creatures, animals are driven into a frenzy as their bodies are altered, and strange new creatures appear.
To represent this menace, all "organic" terrain on the battlefield (namely: Jungle, Marsh, Scrub, and Woods) counts as dangerous terrain for all non-Tyranid units.  The terrain still grants cover, and the appropriate cover saves, and can be moved through carefully as well.  Casualties lost to Tyranoformed terrain do not cause blast markers.

Thoughts?

Its an idea.  Its background is similiar to that which I wrote for the synapse nodes.

As for game play it is a bit hard to judge how much this would cost as a basic upgrade to the whole army.  Possible have it as a choice, ie ou can pay so many points and be called a latter phase subdual army and you get the bonus, however you must bring nidified terrian.

However, as much as it is a good idea, I think we should focus on the core army at the moment, and thenmove on to such things as spacecraft (shameless plug :D ) or nidiforming.

Sounds too powerful to me for tournament games. As a scenario or campaign special rule I like it.

Also I agree with ragnarok that in any case I think we should concentrate on the rest of the list before we consider adding things like this to it.

Cool ideas over there!  I really should go back through the archived posts some time!

Thoughts on hiveships, eh?  *laugh*  I'll put on my thinking symbiote...

It never really passed the brain storming stage.  Charax and myself spend the best part of an evening hammering it out on MSN, then the great (is that the right word) forum change happened.

I'm still not happy with nightmare spores, I would like to see it as BM equaling 1/2 or 1/3 of the units in the formation.

I actually like how the bioships gives the mycetic spores rather than trying to jam then into one of the existing sections of the army list.

I agree that nids shouldn't get pinpoint, way to shooty for them.  However I see nothing wrong with giving them a nice health barrage, with disrupt.

I mean, what better way to start eating a planet then disgourging a few dozen volleys of pryoacid at it?

I think its just strange a space based race having no usable space based assest in epic:A.

I think pyroacid will survive the decent, sinc they are normal shells with casings and all, just they are filled with acids and phage cells and other nasties instead of explosives.

I'm also sure that some nid critters can do orbital drops,  Vituraptors and Harridans spring to mind.  Possible not the suicidal drops other races do, but from a droneship in low orbit maybe.

Vanguard genus' should have it.  Its how they are sent to new worlds to explore.

Vanguard genus creatures are those that can be found away from the main hivefleet.  They mainly include Lictors and stealers, however some gaunt variants have been noted as been vanguard (I think Von something leapers fall in this catorgory)

Hmm. I would rather much allow a swarm (synapse and broods) to be dropped spores to ground than independents.

Maybe this is something that should be looked at to distinguish between Phase III 'Attack' and Phase IV 'Subdual' armies?
