Rules Changes Used

Termagants: 15 points, CC 6+ and FF5+
Hormagaunts and Raveners: 15cm move, Infiltrate
Gargoyles: 20 points CC6+, FF 5+, Bio-Plasma Attack (+1CC), Skimmer
Carnifex: Bio-Plasma Attack (+1CC)
Lictors: 150 points for 3, only one MW attack, gain Commander ability
Dacto-Exocrines: Super Spore Mines 45cm 1BP, Indirect Fire, Disrupt
Lesser Synapse Node: gain Scout and "Ripper Swarms", CC6+ and FF6+

Spawning: 1 pip per Common Brood, 2 pips per Uncommon Brood/DC

Setup

Objectives

Tau chose the ruined studded eastern side of the battlefield and placed Blitzkrieg slightly south of the midline. ?Tyranid Blitzkrieg was placed behind some woods in about 30cm south of the northern table edge. One objectives on the Tau side were placed centrally, just east of the top of the ridge while the second was placed in some ruins in the middle of the SE quadrant of the board. On the Tyranid side, both objectives were placed centrally on their half, just over 30cm apart, the eastern one near woods and the western one in the open, both on the slope of the ridge.

Garrisons

Tyranids kept both Lictor units and two Synapse Nodes off-board and 9 Gargoyles in the Spawn Pool.

Tau placed no garrisons.

SNL 1 was garrisoned in the forest near forward objective 1, along with Hive Tyrant 1, 4 Carnifex, 2 Dacto-Exocrine, 1 Lyco-Exocrine, 1 Haruspex, and 3 Termagants.

SNL2 was garrisoned east of forward objective 2, just able to reach the cover of some trees, along with Hive Tyrant 2, 3 Haruspex, 1 Lyco-Exocrine, and 3 Termagants.
Warrior Brood 1 was garrisoned out in the open, slightly north of forward objective 1, with a brood consisting of 5 Raveners, 2 Zoanthropes, and 6 Termagants.

Warrior Brood 2 was garrisoned out in the open, forward of objective 2 with a brood of 4 Raveners, and 2 Zoanthrope.

Deployment

Tau deployed their two Armoured Cadres widely dispersed against the deployment zone table edge with three Hammerheads slightly ahead in each grouping on either side of the Blitz objective. ?The Battlesuit Cadre was placed forward of the Blitz in the shelter of some ruins, both Armoured Cadres within 15cm.

The Moray was placed near the SE corner of the table, against the baseline, while Tetra Alpha was arranged well ahead of the floating war engine in a widely dispersed formation.

Tetra Beta was tightly packed into the NE corner of the board.

Tyranids had nothing to deploy.

Turn 1

No teleports

Strategy Roll: Tau

Sensing the need for decisive action, the Shas'O coordinates the fire of his Battlesuit Cadre along with that Armoured Cadres Alpha and Beta against the combined brood of Hive Tyrant 1 and Node 1. ?The battlesuits double up to the rocky outcropping that tops the ridgeline, their nimble suits easily dealing with the dangerous terrain. ?The Shas'O marks the enemy as the gravtanks advance, popping up to shoot over the ridge. ?After a massive fusillade, 3 Carnifex, all 3 Exocrine, a Haruspex, and 1 Termagant are slain, but the synapse creatures have survived!

Knowing the danger of allowing even one of these creatures to live, the Moray advances, letting lose with almost its entire arsenal against Hive Tyrant 1 and Node 1, but is only able to kill the Hive Tyrant.

Hive Tyrant 2 advances away from Node 2 and towards the Battlesuit Cadre, firing venom at the Tau amongst the rocks. ?One of the XV8s goes down and the Tyrant howls in rage. ?(I was shocked to discover XV8s have 3+ armour!)

Tetra Beta zooms across the table, marching deep into the Tyranid lines and hides itself behind some woods.

Warrior Brood 1 also advances on the Battlesuit Cadre, felling another XV8.

Tetra Alpha streaks towards the Tyranid Blitz in a zigzagging march easily reaching the objective.

After the preparatory attacks of its fellow broodmates, Warrior Brood 2 engages the Battlesuit Cadre, but, frustratingly, they jump away, though not far enough to escape the speed of the Raveners! ?Fortunately for the Tau warriors they are now close enough to some Hammerheads to gain some support! ?The Crisis Suits acquit themselves admirably, felling 4 Raveners and 2 Zoanthropes to the loss of only one XV8! ?This is enough to push the Tyranids back, but the Shas'O feels that discretion is the better part of valour and falls back to the Tau Blitz.

Deprived of most of its brood, Synape Node 1 attempts to create some new friends, producing a surly Carnifex and a wilted Termagant. (I really should have used Mycetic Spores there.)

Despite their victory, the Battlesuit Cadre stays well back, talking about how scary Raveners look and remain broken under cover of some ruins.

Turn 2

Synapse Node 3 appears right on top of the Tau Blitzkrieg, also revealing two broods of Lictors who hungrily eye the broken Battlesuit Cadre?

Strategy Roll: Tyranid

Attempting to guaranty its own survival, Synapse Node 3 brings down a Mycetic Spore and spawns 3 Carnifex and 1 Haruspex.

Hive Tyrant 2 strives to make out the imperative of the Hive Mind, but the recent death of its fellow Tyrant confuse it and it only advances its brood forward. (The Hive Tyrant wasn't the only one confused, I'd completely forgotten about the Warrior Brood that had been stripped of all its minions and was just *standing* there!)

Tetra Beta advances on the seemingly stunned Warriors of Warrior Brood 2 and hammers them with pulse rifles, dropping one of the dumfounded beasts.

Armoured Cadre Alpha advances to support the Tetras, catching Warrior Brood 2 in a crossfire that completely eliminates the foul creatures.

Shrieking fiercely, Warrior Brood 1 doubles towards Armoured Cadre Beta and the flurry of acid and venom destroys 2 Hammerhead.

Despite the losses, Armoured Cadre Beta maintains its cool and sustains fire on the relatively defenseless Synapse Node 1, destroying the Node itself.

Inspired by this, the Moray sustains fire on Node 2 and a great cheer goes up from the Tau seeing the confusion the destruction of this Node brings to the enemy.

The, now directionless, remnants of Node 1's brood double to get into synapse range of Warrior Brood 1, the Venomfex's weapon having no effect on Armoured Cadre Alpha.

Tetra Alpha goes on overwatch, guarding the Tyranid Blitzkrieg.

Giving in to their hunger, both Lictor Broods move to engage the broken Battlesuits, but the annoying things jump away and under the protective cover of Armoured Cadre Beta. ?The ensuing fight is short and three Lictors are left behind as the others flee, not a single Tau life lost!

The victory against the Lictors rallies the Battlesuits, though they are still a bit shaken. ?The rest of the Tau forces rally as well, though a few blastmarkers remain?

Turn 3

Synapse Node 4 appears right on top of the Tyranid Blitzkrieg, just outside the ZOC of Tetra Beta.

Strategy Roll: Tau

Feeling the pride of serving the Greater Good, Armoured Cadre Alpha pops-up and sustains fire on Tyrant Brood 2. ?The slaughter is immense as 3 Haruspex, 2 Termagants, 1 Exocrine, and the Tyrant itself crash to the ground riddled with holes.

Not to be outdone, Armoured Cadre Beta pops-up as well, sustaining fire into Warrior Brood 2, obliterating 2 Raveners, 2 Termagants, 1 Carnifex, and 2 Warriors!

A troubling thought disturbs Synapes Node 4? it might not survive to spread the swarm! ?It calls down the remaining Mycetic Spores and spawns a remarkably large new family, much to the horror of the nearby Tetras! ?From what was once a peaceful forest glade grow 3 Haruspex, 3 Raveners, 2 Zoanthropes, a Lyco-Exocrine and 1 *very* angry Carnifex! (Rolled 17 pips on the spawning attempt! ?Was only saddened by the fact that I had so many models in my Spawn Pool to choose from?)

Tetra Alpha advances on Warrior Brood 2, trying to position themselves near their own Blitzkrieg, but the presence of Node 3's brood doesn't let them get close enough, and they fire on the stragglers stripping away 3 Termagants and a Ravener.

Confused by this new battle condition: Victory?! the Moray hesitates, hesitates some more, and then fires on Warrior Brood 2, killing a Ravener, a Zoanthrope, and the last Tyranid Warrior. (Man, those Air Caste guys really don't know how to listen to Fire Caste commands! ?That was the second "snake-eyes" activation for the dang thing in two games!)

The headless broodlings of Warrior Brood 2 make a desperate attempt to engage Armoured Cadre Beta. ?Their desperation pays off and 2 Hammerheads are destroyed at the cost of one Ravener, sending the Tau grav-tanks back into their rear area.

Node 3 sends its brood forward to fire on the broken Armoured Cadre Beta, but are only able to fell one Hammerhead as it crashes into some ruins in the ensuing confusion.

Realizing the victory party will be no where near the massive brood that has just arrived, Tetra Beta doubles back toward friendly territory, staying just on the Tyranid side to fire on the remains of Warrior Brood 2 to no effect.

The Greater Good has prevailed and the Shas'O intends to ask the Ethereals to withdraw the invitation to join the Greater Good from the Tyranids.

End of Turn: Tau 2 (BTS, Take and Hold) vs Tyranids 1 (Blitzkrieg)

Well, that certainly went south in a hurry! ?Tau definitely have the firepower to knock out the Tyranid synapse links; coordinated fire is scary! ?And all those skimmers really make it hard to bring down their armour. ?Even with all the firing and skimming, I think I'd rather face Eldar than Tau with the 'Nids!
