Post subject:  GS: Genestealers are useless!

Well at least the way I play them they are!

I really need help using this formation because every time I play them they are a points drain.

They have a 40cm charge which is great but your opposition knows this and because they are a separate formation (you can't protect them at all with gaunts etc.) they get blown away the turn they move into 40cm. Forcing you either to make the charge with a formation that is tiny or having no formation at all.

The first trick I thought of was to hide them completely from the enemy, but doing this they bunch together and are suckers for indirect fire! And still got things zooming round terrain to shoot at them.

Whist attempting to do the first trick, I also tried keeping them close to a Hive Tyrant so I could pull them into a combined assault, but still lost them. This was in an attempt to overcome my second problem with them. They always lose combat resolution. They start 2 up (blast markers, more blast markers), but because of the poor save, low formation size (see above problem), no FF, complete lack of MW and inspiration even eldar rangers can fend them off (and have done, it's etched on my memory!), so I attempted to reduce some of the limitations by pulling them in to larger formations on the assault, but with very little success.

Your opposition knows that they have a good charge range and are one of the few units that don't spawn giving them added insentive to deal with them first.

IMHO Lictors are phenomenal by comparrison (and cheeper) and virtually always make combat and make their points back.

I teleport lictors slap bang next to a HT, the TH calls them in to the assault (commander) and the lictors scuttle off 40cm and butcher the opposition! It's great (possibly too great). The key is they have MW and they are always (almost always) still alive when you use them.

What am I doing wrong with my stealers?
How do you use them?

Used genestealers again last night and as a one shot surprise weapon were very effective.

Turn one the opposition moved into charge range, I charged and wiped out the enemy formation. Then knowing how good they were, he steared clear until he was in a possition to butcher them and then did so. He will not make the same mistake again, therefore the Genestealers just die, for no lose to the enemy!

On the topic of points, I never thought they were expensive, just hard to use effectively. It's a bit like the eldar problem - they seem expensive until you've worked out how to use them, then cheekily cheap.

Garissoning in my mind will just put them closer to the enemy, I'll think about that.
