Hiya guys

I've got a game wednesday evening & I've decided to give my Nid army it's 2nd outing.

Here's the list, recommendations welcome;

Hive Group; Dominatrix
Assault Group; Tyrant, 5 warriors
Assault Group; 4 Warriors
Strike Group; Vituperator
Bio-Titan Swarm; Hydraphant
Lictor Swarm; 6 Lictors
Genestealer Swarm; 9 Genestealers
4x Gargoyle Flock
4x Gaunt Cluster; all Hormaguants
5x Gaunt Cluster; all Termagants
2x Bio-Artillery Cluster; 4 Dactylis
2x Carnifex Cluster
1x Trygon Cluster; 1 Trygon

What do you think?

Cheers

CM

It might be useful if you give us an idea of your planned groupings and game plan.

I'm planning on splitting up the force thusly;

1) Hive Group, Carnifex Cluster, Carnifex Cluster, Trygon Cluster, 4x Gaunt Clusters (all Hormagaunts)

2) Strike Group, 3x Gargoyle Flock + Genestealers carried in the Vituperator

3) Assault Group 1 (contains Hive Tyrant); 5x Gaunt Clusters (all Termagants)

4) Assault Group 2, 2x Bio-Artillery Cluster (all Dactylis)

5)Lictors

6)Hydraphant

The plan is to sit the small assault group & the Dactylis back on my Blitzkrieg & take full advantage of my IDF barrage.

First off however I'm looking to create an immediate threat with the strike group on the weaker flank, then move the Hive Group & Hydraphant up the other with the Tyrant led assault group advancing in the centre. I'll use the Lictors later in the game to try and clearout weakend objective holders.

My primary "concern" when looking at that list is that you've only got 7 activations in a 4000 point game.

As an example, in the last 4000 point game I played, the Eldar had 14 activations and the other army had 19.

Tyranids tend to be lower on the activation scale, but seven seems *awfully* low.

I know what you mean but I'm finding it hard to get many activations at all out of the list.

I could take more small synapse groups & spread the brood across them but where would I find the room for all the big things  :))

6)Hydraphant

I'd go for smaller creatures and smaller swarms.

The Dominatrix is fine on its own, no need to give her bodyguards (perhaps just 1 Trygon).

Add another Assault group and move all creatures (except the Trygon) from the Hive groups to this group. +1 activation.

Then replace the Vituperator with 2 Harridans, for extra mobility. +1 activation.

With the points spared on the Gargoyles and Stealers, you should now be able to buy an Attack Group and a couple of Assault Spawn clusters : a Winged Tyrant and 6 Haruspex/Malefactors should give you a hard-hitting, fast-moving force. +1 activation.

Lose the Hydraphant and find some way to spare some points to buy 2 Hierophants OR buy 1 Hierophant and another, cheap Independant Swarm (6 Stealers, Subterranean Swarm). +1 activation.

Break the 6 Lictors into 2 swarms. They only serve to delay the opponent anyway (unless he's playing an army with a low Strategy Rating), so better to have 2 activations instead of one. +1 activation.

If you plan on having an all-Dactilys swarm, choose an Attack Group instead of an Assault Group : the Tyrant will be better protected than the 3 Warriors.

That should give you about 10-12 activations, depending on your choices. Still a bit low for 4000 points but more acceptable.

I have started to contemplate formulating what to take for a nid army myself

Can you please advise which list you have used for this force so as I can compare?

How did you get 5 gaunts out of the 9.2.1 list?

Here is the army that died horribly last night. Tell me what you think:

Points: 4000
Rules: 9.2.1 Nids
Activations: 14

Excuses: First game with nids under EA rules and didn't understand how delicate nids can be. Did I mention I forgot I had troops in the Vituperator? Also what is up with the Hive Tyrant not having Inspiring!!!

The Vituperator forgot he had troops in his belly. I forgot to drop them on the 2nd turn for a 3rd turn charge. As the Vit only has 25cm movement, he was useless too me when I was 35cm away from the untouched land raider unit that I needed to break.

The lone Hive Tyrant I was using to track the Trygon and host, or to build a swarm closer to the enemy line. At one point I had all 4 hive tyrants near each other. I was then able to spawn a gaunt to go in between the two units. I then was able to use the Commander rule to set up a double charge (should have been a triple yet he took one unit out on his own charge.

It appears to be quite easy to get a joint charge with Hive Tyrants having the Commander ability. They really do need inspiring however to be truly effective.

My best units were the Haruspex for their sheer hitting power and saves in CC, and the lictors for their sniper ability to concentrate hits on the icon bearer and champion thereby messing up the daemon summoning (1 round too late however).

Battle report hey? Let me see what I can get together this weekend.
