Greetings!

To bring the "Red Queen Rising" campaign to an endgame, we decided that the last two major battles would be fought "simultaneously" within the timeframe of the campaign. ?Both battles would be a variation on the "Assault" mission: one with the Imperials as the attackers and one with the Tyranids being the attackers.

The Imperials would be striking deep into Tyranid territory, against a great Capillary Tower that was growing and attempting to breach the atmosphere to spawn a hiveship...

The Tyranids would be assaulting the main city/granaries of Xersus VI, attempting to breach the armoured city walls in hopes of devouring the stored foodstuffs.

To make it interesting, we decided that the location of the two "unique" units in the game, the Deathstrike Missile Launchers and the Red Queen Herself, would be decided secretly by the respective teams *before* the scenarios were set up... that way it would be a gamble as to what would be facing what...

Battle 13 - Absolution

Scenario:

Assault - Defender (3500 army + 875 defenses) vs Attacker (5250)

This scenario used an earlier version of Tyranid Defensive Structures.

Rules Used:

All experimental rules.
Tyranids 7.x

Special Rules

Mixed Imperial Forces: SR4

"Favour of the Queen" - one Synapse group, and associated Brood creatures, gains invulnerable saves.

1d6 Commissars

The "Capillary Tower" counts as both a Spore Chimney and a Brood Hive. ?Doing 6DC damage to the Tower stops these effects but does not destroy the Tower. ?The Capillary tower counts as an Objective for Victory conditions.

"Lurk" - Tyranid swarms with no firefight attacks may go on overwatch to "lurk". ?Lurking allows the formation to make a single charge move (not doubled by infiltrators) to engage an enemy formation in response to their movement.

4x6 Table

Imperials kept the Terminator HQ in reserve for teleport, with the Devastator and Assault Detachments in Thunderhawk 1 and Terminator 1 in Thunderhawk 2.

Tyranids kept Infestation Group 2 and the Lictor Swarms in reserve.

Turn 1

Preliminary barrages have no effect.

No teleports.

Strategy Roll: Imperials (automatic)

Speeder Detachment 1 doubles forward to try and scan Blip 4? but the Nexus Swarm erupts from its burrows of Blip 5 and shoots down two of them before they can bring their Auspexes to bear! (I accidentally revealed that Blip 4 was a "lure" and nothing was there, so we removed it.)


The Land Raiders rev up on a double to fire on the Nexus Swarm, but they do no damage.

Eager for prey, the Harassment Swarm doubles up to fire on Speeder 1, takes out another Speeder, and breaks the Marines.

"Target acquired", as the Deathstrikes sustain fire? the first missile takes out the Trygon? and the other obliterates the Harridan! ?(Slightly bad bit of positioning there by the Tyranids?)

Speeder 2 advance on the Nexus Swarm and take out 1 Gargoyle.

The Warlord Titan marches right up the ridge.

The Vindicators do the same.

The Mechanized Infantry march to the right flank?and provoke fire from the Attack Swarm hiding at Blip 6, which destroys 1 Hellhound.


The Rough Riders double up to scan Blip 1? and reveal a sensor ghost.

Thunderhawk 2 braves the Spore Clouds to drop Terminator 1 on the Attack Swarm? the combat is brief as the elite Marines cut down the Hive Tyrant with ease, losing one of their squads, but completely routing the Tyranid swarm.


The Marauder Bombers feel that all those Spores might be a problem and stand down.

Thunderhawk 1 doesn't feel the same way and delivers the Assault and Devastator Detachments for an air assault on the Nexus Swarm? this prompts the Genestealers lurking at Blip 3 to scurry into the fray as well!

The Marines *almost* do it, taking out 1 Tyranid Warrior and the Hive Tyrant, along with a Gargoyle and an Exocrine? but, in the end, they lose 3 Devastators and the Thunderhawk, and the survivors fall back to the ridge?


End of Turn

All Spore Clouds drift directly towards the enemy table edge (I rolled a "hit" on each scatter die, allowing me to control them).

Blip 10 reveals itself at Infiltration Swarm 1

Blip 13 comes out of the ground as Assault Swarm 3

All Imperial formations rally.

The Nexus Swarm, with some boosts, spawns 2 Raveners, 1 Malefactor, and a Gargoyle, also taking over the lonely Hierodule from the dead Harassment Swarm.

Assault Swarm 1 spawns 2 Zoanthropes and 1 Gargoyle.

Turn 2

The Terminator HQ shows up near Infiltration Node 1.


Lictor Swarm 1 shows up to harass the Vindicators.


Strategy Roll: Imperials

The Terminator HQ engages Infiltration Node 1? which prompts Assault Swarm 2 to reveal itself as Blip 8, firing on overwatch and lending support fire!  The Terminators rip apart 2 Dactylis and 1 Gargoyle, and only lose a single Terminator squad? but the pressure is too much and they lose by "1", falling back to the scrub? and Blip 9!  (Which turns out to be nothing.)


Speeder Detachment 2 engages Lictors 1, with lots of Imperial support, and wipes them out.


The *Genestealers* then engage the intermingled Assault Detachment and Vindicators. Two 'Stealers are crunched, but both Marine formations are wiped out, spreading Blast markers to the nearby Titan and Speeders.


The Nexus Swarm sustains fire on the Land Raiders? and does nothing to them!

The Rough Riders then bravely engage the Nexus Swarm, taking out 2 Raveners and 1 Biovore? before being slaughtered.


The Land Raiders advance on the Nexus Swarm and take out 2 Biovores and an Exocrine.

Infiltration Swarm 1 sustains fire on the Mechanized Infantry? and places a Blast marker? *sigh*

The lone Librarian of the Devastators engages the Nexus Swarm in a firefight with the support of the Land Raiders? unfortunately, for the Marines, the Librarian goes down with a glass jaw in the first round.


Assault Swarm 2 doubles into the swamp to get to Land Speeder 2? and lose 1 Hormagant, 1 Gargoyle, and 1 Tyranid Warrior to the sucking mud!!!

The Warlord advances on the Nexus Swarm, taking out 1 Zoanthrope, 1 Malefactor, and blasting 2DC off of the Hierodule!

Tiny Speeder 1 engages the Genestealers in a firefight? and wipes them out.


The Mechanized Infantry need the tactical advice of the Marine Supreme Commander before they double up to fire on Infiltration Swarm 1? but score no hits.

Terminator 1 then engages Assault Swarm 1? which counter-charges into the Mechanized Infantry!  

The Tyranids take out 1 Terminator and 2 Hellhounds, but lose in the end, suffering 4 Termagants, 4 Hormagaunts, 2 Gargoyles, and 1 Tyranid Warrior.


The Deathstrike Launchers march through the gap in the ridge.

The remaining Thunderhawk performs a long range ground attack on the Nexus Swarm but does no damage.

The Marauders brave Spore Clouds and Gargoyles, suffering 3 Blast markers, before bombing Assault Swarm 2? killing a Gargoyle?

End of Turn

All Imperial formations rally.

Assault Swarm 2 spawns 2 Gargoyles and a Termagant?

No more spawning to see here, folks!  *sigh*

Lictor Swarm 2 and Infiltration Swarm 2 show up to the party.


Strategy Roll: Imperials

The Warlord advances on the Nexus Swarm? and kills 1 Ravener and 1 Gargoyle? Wah waaa!

Terminator HQ engages Lictor Swarm 2 in a firefight? kills 2 Lictors? but, somehow, the Lictors win by "1", breaking the Marines!  WAH WAAA!

The Nexus Swarm engages the intermingled Warlord Titan, Land Raiders, and Speeder Detachment 2.

The Titan takes 2DC damage and the Imperials manage to stomp a Ravener, and the lone Tyranid Warrior? so, all the modifiers cancel out and it comes down to a straight dice off? Tyranids win by "1"? and then go to ground. WAH WAAA!


Infiltration Swarm 1 attempts to sustain fire, but fails, just shooting normally at the Mechanized Infantry, but catching them in a cross-fire with the Lictors.  Four Infantry are scythed down and the formation suffers 7 Blast markers!

The Mechanized Infantry then turn around to engage the Lictors in a firefight and wipe them out.


Assault Swarm 2 double out of the swamp, losing a Hormagaunts, and fires on the broken Land Raiders to no effect.

Speeder 1 advances on Assault Swarm 2 and kills 1 Gargoyle and 1 Termagant.

Assault Swarm 1 engages the Terminator HQ, loses 1 Gargoyle and 1 Ravener, but, again, the Tyranids win by "1"!


Hearing all the screaming on the radio, the Marauder Bombers don't take to the air.

Infiltration Swarm 2 goes on to overwatch.

The Deathstrike Launchers march right up the middle!

Thunderhawk 1 tries to perform a ground attack on Infiltration Node 2, but clips a Spore Cloud and goes down?

End of Turn

All Imperial formations rally? *ouch*



And a bit more spawning occurs this time? but it's not recorded for some reason? (And I'm not going to count the models in the pictures? *laugh*)

The Warlord doubles on Infiltration Swarm 1 and kills 1 Carnifex and 1 Gargoyle.

Terminator 2 then engages Infiltration Swarm 1 in a fire fight, losing a Terminator, but wiping out the Bug nest.


Assault Swarm 1 engages the Land Raiders? and trashes three of them with no losses of their own!


Assault Swarm 2 fails to engage Terminator 2, and just puts a Blast marker on them.

The Marauder Bombers show up to ineffectively ground attack Infiltration Node 2.

Infiltration Swarm 2 attempts to sustain fire, but fails, and just shoots at Speeder 1? taking out a Land Speeder and breaking them!

The Deathstrikes double to ineffectively fire on Assault Swarm 2 with their Heavy Bolters.

Terminator HQ needs to encourage itself to marshal, moving to the Tyranid table edge near the Capillary Tower to take the "Blitz" and clearing all Blast markers.

The Mech Infanty double towards Infiltration Swarm 2, taking 2 Blast markers from the Spore Chimney and kill a Gargoyle.


Speeder 2 advances on Infiltration Swarm and kills a Zoanthrope?


End of Turn

All Imperial formations rally? if they could just fail *once*, please!

A small bit more spawning occurs?

Imperial Forces 2 (BTS, Blitz) vs Tyranids 0 (none)

Imperial player elects to continue.

The Mechanized Infantry hesitate, but then engage Infiltration Swarm 2 and wipe it out.


The Warlord engages Assault Swarm 2? loses 2 Void Shields and mows down 3 Gargoyles, 2 Hormagaunts, and 2 Termagants.


Assault Swarm 1 engages Terminator HQ, loses 2 Gargoyles, and wipes out the Marines!

Speeder 2 doubles on Assault Swarm 1 and kills a Gargoyle.

Assault Swarm 2 doubles on Terminator 2, and breaks them with fire.

The lone Land Raider prepares to engage, thinks better of it and falls back instead!

Speeder 1 engages Assault Swarm 2? and gets swatted down.

The Deathstrikes then engage Assault Swarm 2 in a firefight, and they counter-charge into the Warlord!


The Warlord suffers 2DC damage? and 2 Tyranid Warriors are all that survive for the Bugs.

The Marauder pilots thought the war was over and were already in the Officer's Club?

End of Turn

*AGAIN*, all Imperial formations rally...

A small bit more spawning occurs?

Imperial Forces 2 (BTS, Blitz) vs Tyranids 0 (none)

Imperial player elects to continue.

Assault Swarm 1 engages the intermingled Speeder 2 and Mechanized Infantry? taking out 1 Land Speeder, 1 Hydra, 1 Chimera, and 1 Infantry? but only 2 Tyranid Warriors live to tell the tale!


The Warlord fails to activate? and clears 2 Blast markers.

Speeder 1 sustains fire on Assault Swarm 1? and wipes it out.

The Marauder pilots salute their brave brethren with a drink!

End of Turn

Imperial Forces 3 (BTS, Blitz, T-n-H) vs Tyranids 0 (none)

Extremely well done by the Imperial player, really had to have some bottle to continue when they already had the win but I suspect they needed to catch up in the overall campaign.

Nice report once more Chroma, thanks for posting it.
