Well, it's been a while since I posted a batrep... dang Warmachine!  *laugh*

I didn't want people to think I've gotten lax in my duties, so I cunningly arranged a game against Biel-Tan by asking if anyone wanted to playtest against Necrons... Muhahahaha!

Not sure if I'll have time to do up the whole thing this morning, but I *do* have time for some teasers!

Battlefield:

4x6
Biel-Tan chose corner deployment.

Deployment:

Biel-Tan kept Aspect Warhost 1 and the Windrider Troupe in the Webway.

Tyranids kept the Lictors in reserve.

Tyranids garrisoned the Nexus swarm of the Brood Hive (Blitz) and placed it on overwatch.  The Genestealer Swarm was also garrisoned.

Remaining deployment as shown:

Turn 1

No teleports.

Strategy roll: Biel-Tan? who let the Tyranids go first.

Assault Swarm 1 marches up the low hill and infests the Imperial shrine and Hero's Tower.

Guardian Warhost advances into the building near them and hunkers down into cover.

Assault Swarm 2 marches forward, infesting the ruined buildings on the top of another hill.

The Shields of Vaul double over to Assault Swarm 2 and gun down 1 Gargoyle and 1 Hormagaunt.

The Windriders know what to do and they power out of the Wraithgate to engage Assault Swarm 2 with the support of the Shields of Vaul.

The Bugs knock a single Vyper out of the air as the airborne Eldar lay waste to 4 Termagants, 3 Gargoyles, and 2 Hormagaunts. ?The defeated Tyranids pull back a bit and nurse their wounds.

Attack Swarm 1 marches forward, reaching the road and moving steadily upon it.

Swords of Vaul 1 powers up, but experiences some difficulties, and the Autarch is no where to be seen, so they just move forward.

Assault Swarm 3 marches right down the road, taking cover in and around Attack Swarm 1.

Swords of Vaul 2 advances and pops-up to fire on Attack Swarm 1 and manages to take out 1 Carnifex and 1 Haruspex!

Attack Swarm 2 also marches, reaching the road, and zipping along? as fast as Carnifex can zip, that is.

The Revenants bound forward on a double and blast away 2 Carnifex and 1 Zoanthrope from Attack Swarm 2

Guardian Warhost 2 goes on overwatch to guard the Eldar Blitz.

The Nexus Swarm sustains fire on Swords of Vaul 2 and the exploding spore pods take out 2 Falcon and break the Troupe.

Aspect Warhost 2 double forward to fire on Attack Swarm 2, melting a Carnifex and leaving the swarm one Blast marker from instinctive.

Left all alone, the Genestealers march in to the "X"-shaped ruin?

End of Turn:

Swords of Vaul 2 fails to rally.

Assault Swarm 1 spawns back 1 Gargoyle and 2 Hormagants.

Attack Swarm 1 spawns 1 Carnifex.

Assault Swarm 3 spawns *2* Carnifex? and gives them to Attack Swarm 1.

The Nexus Swarm, all along and near the Brood Hive generates *ELEVEN* spawn points, bringing forth 2 Gargoyles, 1 Zoanthrope, and 1 Haruspex.

(Camera battery died as I was taking the End of Turn shot, didn't realize it had been corrupted. ?*sigh* ?Here's the Windriders attacking instead...)

Turn 2

No teleports.

Strategy roll: Biel-Tan? who decide to go first this time.

The Wraithgate opens as the Autarch and Aspect Warhost 1 buzz out to engage Attack Swarm 2, with the support of Aspect Warhost 2, getting slightly close to Assault Swarm 1.  No Eldar are hurt in the exchange, but only the shame-faced Hive Tyrant survives for the Tyranids and he skulks away.  Aspect Warhost 1 repositions?

?for Aspect Warhost 2 to engage Assault Swarm 2, who has a single Blast marker now? with the support of Warhost 2. The Bugs have the support of the Nexus, because one of the Swooping Hawks lands near them.  This fight is a little more ferocious, going for two round? the Eldar lose 2 Swooping Hawks, including the Exarch while? a single Tyranid Warrior survives.  The Aspect Warriors reposition themselves?

?for, "Are you kidding me?!"?the Windriders need the gentle encouragement of the Autarch to engage the Nexus Swarm, who also now has a single Blast marker.  The Bugs swat down 2 Jetbikes and a Vyper, losing 2 Zoanthropes and 2 Biovores.  The Eldar just narrowly manage to win, dropping a single Gargoyle as the Tyranids fall back.

(Okay, that was a painful show of dominos falling? *sigh*)

Assault Swarm 1 doubles on Guardian Warhost 1, catches them in a crossfire with the Genestealers, and actually shoots down 1 Guardian!

The Genestealers can't turn down an invitation to a BBQ and engage Guardian Warhost 1, leaving one member of the swarm in support range of Swords of Vaul 1 (I learned that trick quick!).  It's a brutal, brutal fight that goes on for two rounds.  In the end, six Genestealers have been slain? but the victorious seventh 'Stealer dances on the bodies as a single unit of Wraithguard and a Heavy Weapon Platform are all that survive of the Eldar.

The Revenants advance on Attack Swarm 1 and kill 2 Carnifex, 1 Haruspex, 1 Malefactor? and the Hive Tyrant!

The remains of the Nexus Swarm engage Aspect Warhost 2, losing 1 Biovore and 1 Gargoyle? and *eliminate* the Aspect Warrior formation!  (I could've declared "intermingled" between the two Aspect Warhost, but all those inspiring characters would have made that difficult to pull off.)

The Shields of Vaul advance and do some of their own "elimination"; targeting and destroying the lone Tyrant of Attack Swarm 2.

Assault Swarm 3 advances on Aspect Warhost 1, catching them in a crossfire and taking down 1 Swooping Hawk.

Swords of Vaul 1 advance on the now uncovered Tyranid Warrior of Assault Swarm 2 and eliminate him as well.

The lost and lonely Carnifex of Attack Swarm 1 snuggle up close to

Guardian Warhost 2 remains on overwatch?

End of Turn:

Guardian Warhost 1 and Swords of Vaul 2 remain broken.

Assault Swarm 1 spawns back 1 Ravener, 1 Hormagaunt, and 2 Termagants.

All other swarms fail to spawn.

Turn 3

The Lictors show up in the ruins near Guardian Warhost 2? and the Avatar also shows up there, waggling a flaming finger and say, "No, no, no!"

Strategy roll: Biel-Tan

The Shields of Vaul advance to attempt to secure the Brood Hive and kill 2 Biovores and 1 Zoanthrope from the Nexus Swarm? but it's not instinctive yet!

The Shining Spears race in, losing one member to an upright post, and slam into the Nexus Swarm.  Two more Shining Spears go down, and the Autarch's invulnerable save keeps him alive, while only the Hive Tyrant and Warrior survive the onslaught for the Bugs.

Seeing a target rich environment, the Revenants sustain fire on Assault Swarm 3? targeting units *not* in cover and blow away 2 Carnifex, 3 Hormagants, and 3 Termagants, driving the swarm instinctive.

Assault Swarm 3 retaliates by engaging Swords of Vaul 1, which has support from the Revenants, knocking down 3 Fire Prisms, losing 3 Gargoyles and 1 Hormagaunt, but winning by "1" to knock out the last Fire Prism.

The Avatar bellows and barges into the Lictors? and promptly loses 2DC from MW claws! (My opponent hasn't played Eldar in a while? and totally forgot the Avatar doesn't have reinforced armour!  I nearly took down the godling before it could do anything? *laugh*)  Shocked, the Avatar then eviscerates all 4 Lictors and sits down for a rest?

Unsure what to do, the Last Genestealer realizes the Revenants aren't looking its way, so it engages them from behind (Hey now!), with the support of Assault Swarm 3.

Incredibly, this is the first round of combat:

Revenant 1 takes 2DC damage, while Revenant 2 takes 1 DC damage from support fire.

And then Round 2 begins!  The Last Genestealer is able to knock down Revenant 1 moments before Revenant 2 finally blows it away.  (SO CLOSE!  *laugh*)

The instinctive Nexus Swarm attempts to engage the Shields of Vaul, but fails, and winds up only putting a Blast marker on their prey.

Guardian Warhost 2? stays guarding the Eldar Blitz on overwatch.

Assault Swarm 1 marches, spreading out to protect the two forward Tyranid Objectives and pushes a few Brood creatures onto the Biel-Tan half of the battlefield.

The Windriders take a leisurely ride, spreading out to secure both Eldar forward Objectives?

End of Turn:

Biel-Tan 2 (Blitz, DTF) vs Tyranids 0 (none)

Thanks!

Yep, my opponent laughed when I declared the assault... but *I* was laughing in the end.

That was probably the best I've ever had Genestealers do in a game... heck, they attacked *two* different formations!  *laugh*

You could of attacked so the first rev blocked the los to the other (being warmachines and all), that way el stealer would have only had to fight one at a time and lived for one round longer!

Their 30cm+ move means they can counter-charge 10cm... so the second move to get LOS on the poor 'Stealer... still did me proud!  *laugh*

Nope, you have to go straight towards the enemy, you can't go sideways or anything (at least this is the way we have always played it).

1.12.4 Counter Charges
A unit must use their counter charge move to move directly towards the closest enemy unit. It may move into base contact if close enough, and as long as the enemy is not already in contact with two defending units. Units can choose not to counter charge if they wish, but if they do counter charge they must head towards the nearest enemy.

Ah, we've always played "directly" as "shortest available path", not "straight-line"... seems a bit "gamey" to me to be so "direct"... *laugh*

As well, I suppose Revenant 1 could've just "barged" over the Genestealer and that would've had it caught between the two Titans, for the same effect.

I think when you barge you push units with you, not go over them as they remain in btb? Or is this the case?

Surely directly is the closest available path? Or do you mean closest path to getting an attack angle. In which case the wording wouldn't matter either way.

Certainly in the UK tourneys I have seen WE formations are wary of being caught in this way.

Barged units are "moved out of the way", and then placed as close to their starting position and in contact with the barging war engine as possible; so, I believe, you "sandwich" a single non-WE unit if you tried.

Surely directly is the closest available path? Or do you mean closest path to getting an attack angle. In which case the wording wouldn't matter either way.

Well, "available", to me, means "usable": there's no "available" path *through* another war engine. ?And the difference it makes is that you still cannot go running where ever you want, you need to approach the nearest enemy.
Certainly in the UK tourneys I have seen WE formations are wary of being caught in this way.
I believe there's been some debate as to whether you need to "move directly" on an enemy that's already been based or if you can select other enemies that might be in counter-charge range once the nearest is contacted.

Another great Chroma batrep! Thank you.

After many months of warmaster or playing other armies I'll be dusting off my bugs again later this month for 2 clashes against Marines and Orks. I can't wait!

From reading the batrep it seems hard to see how the bugs could have won. Eldar along with Tau are the hardest armies for the bugs to take on I know but did you feel you were in with a shout?
