Well, this was the final "normal" game for the Red Queen campaign, and it was a doozy! ?It took us a long time to actually get arrangements to play it to work out, so we wanted to make it significant.

Before we played, we worked out the Campaign Score so far:

Imperial Forces: 32 vs  Red Queen Forces: 33

So, nail-bitingly close! ?The Imperials had to score a "moderate victory" to achieve anything even close to a minor campaign win...

(Sorry to kind of tease, not sure I'll get this posted tonight... I may be teaching a new player how to play EPIC, so I've got a good excuse! ?*laugh*)

Battle 14 - Consumption

Scenario:

Grand Assault - Defender (4000 army + fortifications) vs Attacker (6000)

Rules Used:

All experimental rules.
Tyranids v8.x
Cadian Defense Force v1.x

Special Rules

Mixed Imperial Forces: SR3 (Imperial Guard dominant)

Large Fortifications (see attached .pdf)

Relentless Assault - destroyed Tyranid swarms may be returned to play after two turns, measuring their first move from a Brood Hive.

Citizens Defense - until the City Walls are breached, the entire area behind them is considered dangerous terrain to all Tyranid units.

Deployment

4x6 Table

Tyranids kept both Lictor Swarms in reserve for teleports, and the Red Queen's Swarm in reserve for moving on from the Tyranid table edge.

Tyranids forward deployed the Genestealers.

The Imperials manned most of the major fortifications with the Shadowsword and Kasrkin Company on overwatch, and remaining deployment as seen below:

Turn 1

The preliminary bombardment hammers the Kasrkin HQ, killing 1 Chimera and 1 Kasrkin, and the Elite Kasrkin, taking out 1 Valkyrie.

No teleports.

Strategy Roll: Tyranids (automatic)

The Genestealer Swarm leaps forward to engage the entrenched Infantry Company? and runs smack-dab into two minefields, killing one of them! ?The teeth and claws of the 'Stealers only manage to dig out 1 Infantry unit, and the counter-attack wipes out the multi-limbed creatures? (Ugh, not an auspicious beginning!)


Artillery Battery 2 sustains fire on Assault Swarm 1, killing 1 Hormagaunt and 1 Termagant.

Assault Swarm 1 responds by marching forward.

Artillery Battery 1 musters a sustain fire action as a retort, and blasts away 1 Ravener, 2 Termagants, and 4 Raveners from Assault Swarm 1? ouch!

The Thunderbolts then dive down to ground attack Assault Swarm 1, taking out 1 Gargoyle and another Ravener.


The Hierophant doubles towards the Tactical Detachment, suffering 1DC damage from a long range shot from the Shadowsword, and proceeds to slag 3 Tactical Marines!

The Tacticals hope to engage the Hierophant, but fail, regrouping to clear 5 Blast markers.

Nexus Swarm 1 doubles on the Tactical Detachment? and manages to take out the Librarian!

The Infantry Company stays dug in and sustains fire on Assault Swarm 1, killing 1 Ravener, 1 Hormagaunt, and 1 Termagant, driving the swarm instinctive.

Nexus 2 doubles on the Infantry Company and puts a Blast markers on them.

The City Militia goes on overwatch.

The Hydraphant marches up the left Tyranid flank.

The Kasrkin HQ goes on overwatch.

The Vituperator marches up the middle? and hits a minefield, but is unscathed.


The Baneblade attempts to sustain fire on the Vituperator, but fails and just gets of some ineffective shots.

Assault Swarm 2 marches forward.

The Elite Kasrkin regroup, moving and clearing all Blast markers.

Emanating power and terror, The Red Queen marches onto the battlefield?


End of turn:

All Imperial formations rally.

Some scattered spawning occurs? (Didn't record it for some reason? *sigh*)

Turn 2

No teleports.

Strategy Roll: Imperials? on a tie.

Artillery Company 2 sustains fire on The Red Queen, but only manages to do 1DC damage to a Hierodule.

The Shadowsword tries to sustain fire, but fails, shooting normally at The Red Queen, and knocks 2DC off the other Hierodule?

The Hierophant engages the Tactical Detachment, suffers 1DC damage, and wipes out the Marines? *crunch*


Nexus 2 attempts to sustain fire? but fails, and throws some spores at Infantry Company 1 for a single Blast marker.

Infantry Company 1 goes on overwatch.

The Baneblade goes on overwatch.

The Hydraphant double towards the City Militia, which lets loose for all they are worth? and place a Blast marker? the Baneblade also fire at it? for a Blast marker.

Nexus Swarm 1 doubles and puts a Blast marker on the Shadowsword.

The Thunderbolts dive down to strafe the Strikes Swarm, but do no damage.

The Kasrkin Company tries to go on overwatch, but fails and fires on the Vituperator for 1 Blast marker.

Assault Swarm 1 engages the Infantry Company, dodging mines, but losing 3 Hormagaunts and a Gargoyle to overwatch fire.  The Tyranids take out both Snipers, but lost 3 Raveners and are pushed back!  (Dang those fortification saves!)


The Vituperator then engages the Infantry Company!  The Kasrkin HQ's overwatch fire doesn't do much? but the boys in the trenches make the Tyranids pay a steep price over two rounds.  The Bugs win, but the Vituperator is shot down, causing the swarm to break apart? and only a Commissar and another Infantry unit survive for the Imperials.


The Bombards try to advance to get a close range shot, but fail and only move.

Assault Swarm 2 marches right up the middle, heading for the gates.

The Elite Karskin advance, popping up, and let fly at Assault Swarm 2, killing 2 Raveners and dropping *7* Blast markers on the Bugs!

The Red Queen believes she will double? but the wounded Hierodules are cranky and She just winds up moving forward?

End of turn:

All Imperial formations rally.  With no Space Marine formations in play, the Imperial Strategy Rating drops to 2.

Some scattered spawning occurs? (Looks like I didn't record any of the spawning!  Must've had it on another sheet? that's gone? *sigh*)
