well the barrage template has a radius, but if you are within 2.5cm of the enemy then why by the great shadow arn't you engaging?  same really goes for a 15cm range weapon.  So prehaps giving them some FF and CC ability would be a better representation of them blowing up, since nids are immune to the bioacid and sharpnal , and say that ASMs used in an assault are removed from play, but don't count towards combat resolution (I can't see a hive tyrant shouting "Run away" as he sees half a dozen sporemines blow up).

And I'm waiting on the battle report to.

You can use the Wh40k spore mine for epic. It should have the correct size.

As for the orginal post: tyranid aircraft,  I also believe they should not have access to fast moving types like fighters and bombers, although I do believe that such a thing as organic jet engine Is possible. I think it basicallly comes down to aesthetics, GW want each race to play and look  differently, an organic fighter or bomber would be to much like the conventional races, just not 'alien' enough.

As for the tyranid barrage ballon idea, I think its a good idea, mainly because, I am the one who dreamt it up and posted here on this forum, but also because it is very close to the spore mine concept as nealhunt said, and therefore not difficult to see how the next evolution into a barrage balloon could take place. Also it will not be difficult to represent on the table-top.

The original idea was based on that of a the WWII air defences, in the case of tyranids

there would be two possibilities: a balloon would be tethered to an 'anchor' creature which would plod along with the rest of the swarm. Each one would be an indepentant creature.

or it could be tethered to a large creature and bought as an weapon upgrade, as described in earlier posts.

The ballon would mount a AA weapon of short range but powerful in effect.

The balloon its self would be made up of many smaller 'pockets' so it could resist enemy fire better than a single envlope.

The balloon itself would float too high to have an effect on ground combat, and the weaponry on it would be orientated upwards not downwards, so no FF or CC values.

Another role I just thought up would be in a scouting/spotting role, for indirect weapons such as bio-artillery.
But this is really for another thread.

Sorry I couldn't remember who first posted it to give you credit.
