Epic 2008 Handbook and Tyranid list 8.4ish Markconz variant, with some modifications to the Tyranid special rules based on feedback from Dave and Rahan. These were:

1. Instead of counting no blast markers in assaults, Tyranids never count as having more than the enemy.
2. Tyranids do their spawning/rallying in the usual sequence alternating with opposing formations rallies, and just rally automatically but do not remove all blastmarkers.
3. Broken suppresses two spawning dice, rather than no spawning at all.

In addition I decided to trial some other ideas. Specifically some tweaks to bio-titans (and still waiting to see your promised ideas on these Chroma, but seeing as you asked - here's my latest take on them for what it is worth... :;):).

Also a synapse group of two tyrants that someone else suggested  (I forget who sorry).  In fact there were also a number of little tweaks with stats (eg Neal's CC3+ for hormis), and also numbers in brood groups that I was playing around with... However, the focus was primarily on how the special rules were working here, so those tweaks are of minor importance in comparison. I've detailed them in that pdf document above for anyone who is interested.

Also the marine player has Eldar and didn't have any of his Imperials ready except titans, so he borrowed my marines for this game.

Setup and Turn 1

As below. No garrisons except the Biovores who were forward a little bit of the brood nest. The photo below is in fact taken after the first 3 activations.

SR won by Marines.

-Gaunts 1 march,
-Whirlwinds1 shoot Biovores killing 2 and a warrior
-Gaunts2 march



-Next Dom marches to forest advancing on marine objective o2.
-Speeders1 doubles behind Dom and fires killing a Gargoyle.
-Predators move and fire on Dom swarm with crossfire but only place 2BM.
-Malefactors decide to ignore Speeders1 and march up to join Gaunts 2.
-Assault double behind centre forest.
-Hierophants march up between forests near marine objective o2.
-Whirlwinds2 shoot Malefactors killing 2 and a Carnifex.
-Speeders2 double and crossfire malefactors killing one.
-Harridan doubles and shoots Speeders2 placing a BM.
-Warlord advances into forest ahead of it and opens up on Hierophants killing the rearmost one (which  didn't manage to get fully behind cover). Instinctively the other broken Hierophant waddles forward slightly.
-SC doubles and shoots Malefactors placing another BM.
-Biovores shoot Speeders1 killing one.
-Thawk1 strafes Gaunts1 killing some gaunts
-Thawk2 strafes Gaunts1 killing some more gaunts.

End of turn below (opposite viewpont to photo above).


Disengage, 3 Gargoyles miss both t-hawks.
All marines rally.
Tyranid spawing. Dominatrix spawns a malefactor, Biovores spawn a biovore, gaunts1 3 gaunts, gaunts2 2 gaunts, Malefactors spawn a carnifex.

Turn 2

Lictors teleport near whirlwinds1.

Marines win SR.
-Speeders1 sustain fire placing 2BM on the Dom Swarm due to crossfire.
-Predators sustain fire killing 1 trygon and wounding another and placing 4BM on Dom swarm with crossfire.
-Lictors engage whirlwinds...

... and due some terrible rolling only the hunter is killed and the Lictors are wiped out!
-Gaunts2 enagages and breaks speeders 1 killing all but one of them.
-The Warlord advances and blast the Dom Swarm, killing a trygon and doing 2 damage to the Dominatrix. The swarm scuttles instinctively towards the middle forest to seek cover.
-Whirlwinds1 sustain fire on the Malefactors killing a Tyrant.
-The hierophant engages and breaks the predators, killing two and the hunter.
-Gaunts 2 doubles and fires at the Sumpreme Commander Company placing a BM.
-Supreme Commander Company sustains fire at the malefactors killing a Malefactor.
-Whirlwinds2 sustain fire on Dominatrix doing nothing.
-Harridan doubles and shoots Whirlwinds2 placing a BM.
-TacA ground attacks and crossfires gaunts1 killing 3 gaunts in combination with the Thawk.
-Biovores sustain fire and kill another of Landspeeder1.
-Assault double forward to within assault range of biovores.
-Thawk2 strafes gaunts1 killing 1 gaunt.
-Malefactors marshal removing 2 BM and advance towards the Warlord.

End of turn below before spawning/rallies.


Thawks leave taking  BM but no damage from lone gargoyle.
Marines - predators fail to rally, as does landspeeder2. With withdrawals the predators move behind the Nid side forest, landspeeder2 moves up behind the centre forest.

Dominatrix spawns a gargoyle, biovores a biovore, malefactors a malefactor, gaunts1 1 gargoyle, gaunts2 a termagaunt.

Turn 3

SR won by marines.

-Landspeeder 1 move and fire behind the malefactors targetting the last Tyrant but only placing 2BM.
-Supreme Commander formation sustains fire on the Malefactors killing 2 and with crossfire breaking the formation, which heads over to the Dominatrix to complain.
-The Harridan engages Whirlwinds2 and despite killing 3 of them, it takes a critical and loses the combat, flapping off in back behind the gaunts. The remaining victorius whirlwind realises all it's friends are dead and breaks.


-The hierophant looks at the deadly close combat whirlwinds1 and has second thoughts about attacking, but decides their luck can't hold and engages. This time it works and the whirlwinds are wiped out.
-T-Hawk strafes gaunts1 killing none.
-TacA sustains fire killing a single gaunt of gaunt1.
-Gaunt1 engages and wipes out TacA for loss of 4 hormagaunts.
-Biovores sustain fire doing 4 hits on Assault, killing one of them and placing 5 BM.
-Assault enages Bivores killing 2 and breaking them and losing one of their number and breaking in return. The Biovores fall back to their Brood Nest.
-TacB ground attacks into the centre of town crossfiring Gaunts2 killing 2.
-Gaunts2 engages TacB killing all but two of them and destroying the thunderhawk, for the loss of 3 gaunts.


-Dominatrix engages Speeders1in firefight, and despite no damage being caused by either side, wipes them out due to a 6-1 combat resolution roll... The Dominatrix slinks back out of sight of the Warlord.
-The Warlord moves and fires doing 2 DC damage to the Heirophant and  breaking it. The Hierophant scuttles off to the Marine Blitz.

Final positions below:


Remaining T-Hawk saves a hit (at last!) from a gargoyle as it disengages.
-Predators fail to rally, Assault fail to rally, TacB fails to rally.
-Dominatrix spawns a Malefactor, Biovores spawn 2 hormagaunts thanks to the brood nest,  Gaunts1 spawns 3 hormagaunts, Gaunts2 spawns 2 termagaunts, Hierophant regenerates a DC.

Turn 4

Marines win SR.

-Warlord moves into forest and fires on Dominatrix swarm... but only manages to kill a trygon.
-Thawk strafes gaunts2 killing 3 hormis.
-Dominatrix engages Warlord bringing Malefactors along as well.


The Warlord kills a trygon, 2 malefactors and a carnifex, but can't withstand the assault and is destroyed! (taking 8DC damage). The Dominatrix swarm breaks again from casualties and restreats. The Malefactors consolidate back to marine objective o1.

-The Harridan doubles and shoots and kills the last objectionable whirlwind.
-The last landspeeder moves and fires doing a point of damage to the Hierophant and breaking it.
-Gaunts2 moves to secure the Tyranid objectives o2 and o3.

Marine player with only one activation left figures he can't win from here and concedes.

4-0 to Nids. Break their spirit, Defend the Flag, They shall not pass, Take and Hold.

Conclusion

Hard to make too many comments from this game. Apart from some good close combat rolls with Whirlwinds(!), the marine shooting was generally pretty poor. This was despite them achieving many many crossfires (though at heavy cost with the close ranges involved).  In particular the air attack on the town was disastrous, the Marine player was a bit cocky having slaughtered bugs with eldar a few times I think. Needs a bit  more practice with marines who don't get hit and run and triple activations...

As to the special rule changes suggested by Dave and Rahan, yeah I think I'm a believer. Perhaps even the 'tyranids never count as having more BM than the enemy' could be dropped.

Indeed, I'm finding that with the Phase III list I can put a lot of pain of an army in the first turn in a massed assault.

What were your thoughts on the new spawning?

New Spawning - extra that occured in this game was:

Turn2: 1 gargoyle for dom (and in fact looking at the pic it shouldn't have, so maybe misrecorded that spawning).
Turn3:  Biovores spawn 2 hormagaunts thanks to brood nest.

Not much of a difference this game then.
