In answer to Ragnarok's query about the trygon group - yes the tyrant spent most of game hiding from the enemy - either behind the trygons or the small factory that was objective 5.

Both Wako and Captain Belli appropriately berated the poor tyrant from the sidelines for his cowardly approach to the battle! Still - he survived..just!

Nothing wrong with Tyrants hiding.  Mine have three approaches

1) cower in some woods with the artillery brood

2) act like a diva and have a massive and excessive body guard.  By surrounding themselves with as many carnies and assault broods as they can

3) Be a flyrant and spend their short life wondering two things
a) Why he has such a bad save
b) why can't winged warriors get such a crap job.
:D

This may be a daft question but is there any reason why Trygons are not independent?

If the fluff has them tunnelling up and emerging straight into combat, how do the synapse creatures keep up? Should I be modelling little miners hats for my Tyrants?  :D

As I have already said, I'm no fluffmeister on bugs so this may be a daft question but I would be a happy to field a pair of independent Trygons for say 300 points.

Rules wise they are not independant.  They sill need to be within 12" (40K) of a synapse to be okay.  But with Ld10 and fearless they should be fine outside of synpase.

The funny thing is that in the 40K dex there are only 3 things that don't need synpase.  Rippers, genestealers and biovores.  Lictors do need synpase!

The problem we have is trying to figure out which creatures have enough self awareness to act effeciently outside of synpase.

Lictors and stealers are vanguard creatures so should be fine.  Titans are big enough tohave large brains and know what to kill.  But it all breaks down.

In my opinion only gaunts should worry about synpase.  even gargoyles have a decent enough Ld to not care most of the time in 40K, same goes for Raveners

Though I can see the biotanks needing to be within synpase to act in a useful manner, rather than just kill everything.

In the end I think it came down to us not wanting them to compete with the bio titans lictors and stealers.

As far as 40k goes, the following do not require synapse (* denotes a creature with independant / synapse status in Epic)

Hierophant *
Hierodule (Both types)
Trygon
Harridan *
Carnifex

Basically, this is because they all have the fearless rule in 40k, which means they automatically pass any ld. tests they are required to make.

However Epic relegates independant status back to only the Hierophant, as having a dozen independant Carnifex broods running around the table would just be too scary. :D

Also, the Harridan does not have Synapse in 40k, but it's a fairly logical assumption to allow it to have Synapse in Epic, due to fluff, and the mechanics of the 40k flyer rules meaning synapse would be hard to represent.

Fearless doesn't mean they don't automatically pass Ld test, merely morale tests.  This has been reafirmed in the nid FAQ where it states that carnifex do take instinctive behaviour checks, but if they fail they don't fall back but lurk instead (which makes no sense since the options are risk failing IB or lurk).

Naturally FWs FAQ goes against this and says that fearless creatures ignore IB.

I was going with the FW FAQ which actually seemed to make sense... oh well. :)

The scary thing is that FW rules normally don't make sense and GWs do (to a greater extent, ignoring mindwar),

Though I think we should probably ignore the GW FAQ, they have rehashed it at least once if not twixe due to them not understanding their own rules!
