I thought you did a fantastic job Jimbo, clear organised categories and rules, and always on hand to answer queries etc. :)

I would still enter Epic painting competitions prizes or not... however, I think prizes would make me try harder on individual entries, rather than just entering pieces I have painted up for my armies.

I have to agree that there are a lot of mercenary people out there (& I include myself in that - look at my business name... I'm not ashamed to be a Mercenary soul }:) )for whom the prizes would have been a great incentive.

I have to admit I really regretted retiring from the competition when I got the prize list from Fanatic - I'd have entered every category to get my hands on some of those beauties....

My apologizes. This thread was certainly not intended as a critique of your outstanding efforts Jimbo. I think Tuff put it  pretty well: these are just a few random thoughts on what could be done to make next years comp even better.

Cheers :)

I for one entered for the fun of "parading your units," as Vanlack said.  At the same time I did display units I am painting for my army and not a specific piece done for the competion.

It was lot of fun when I was painitng thinking of the you guys passing judgement on them.

I didn't enter because I didn't have anything "competition-worthy" to submit.

Also, i've spent large sums of money trying to get some nice terrain and I was hoping to have that ready so I culd submit it, without success :(

Ditto. I am a strict "gaming standard" painter and as a result I only paint special models to a higher standard. I didn't manage to paint the Death Knights chapter command in time as I got the inspiration way too late.  :(

Hey Jimbo, you did a good job. I'm just an awkward bugger and driven by greed... well at least greed for more Epic stuff.

This is the very first read compo I've ever entered... and I don't mean just for Epic... I mean in real life!

Ditto me, I'm not a good enough painter (or modeller, for that matter :( ) to enter comps per se, but I was curious enough to try and get feedback on my SOB pieces by entering them. If I had had readier access to a decent camera I may have entered more (something to put on the christmas wish list :D ) This is really the first time anyone has seen any of my armies.
Many, many thanks to you all for making it possible, Jimbo especially, and for restoring my faith in Epic.

You should have entered.

My winning entry last year was only painted to gaming standard and it jointly won the Open Category.

Apparently we implement a different version of the "gaming standard". Yours is much more strict...  :O

I think we have a problem if people feel they should only enter a peice if it is painteed to Golden Demon standard or heavily converted in some way.
IMO the best part is simply seeing what people come up with: A model doesn't have to be particularly well painted to be interesting. It could be a new original paint scheme, a small simple conversion or -in the case of a battlegroup- a great coherency in the model's paint scheme.
If all we got was entriies of the green "Box" warlord painted to a very high standard well that would just be soooo boring! It is in the weird conversions and ooriginal paint jobss that people get inspiration to do their own original stuff.
I'd rather see 4 or 5 different Marine paint schemes painted to a gaming standard than (yet another) well painted Ultramarines force.

Sure some entries will be better painted than others but I think it's really sad if people don't want to enter because they feel the bar has been raised above their standards. That's shouldn't be the case. As the Competition description says: The aim of the comp is to see a lot of examples of painted Epic miniatures.

Cheers! :)

to be honest that is very nice of you to say, but my method for Orks is really really simple (and fast).

For example for my Grot Bomb Launcha

http://www.ifelix.co.uk/phoepic202.html

Painting was done by undercoating in white, painting in the black parts and the crew. The black sections were then drybrushed with Tin Bitz and then lightly drybrushed with an alumnium coloured paint.

The rest of the model was then painted red and given a light chestnut ink wash.

The details of the crew were then picked out, green flesh with some highlights in yellow, alumnium coloured weapons and brown accessories.

For most of my Orks (and the Landing Craft I mentioned)

It is

Black undercoat

Drybursh Tin Bitz

Lightly Drybrush Chainmail

Pick out bits in red and green where appropriate.

This picture shows the Buggies done as above and the Gunz done as explained for the Grot Bomb Launcha.

Yeah for me its the ego trip of showing off what i can or cant do. :D

Winning a prize would be cool, but i didnt enter for the prizes, you gotta be in it to win it though!

And if nothing else, it helps clear the painting desk of projects!!!
Always a bonus ?

Thanks for doing the head-honcho job Jimbo.

I think this covers me. I sent it one entry because it was too funny. The other two I posted were for a friend who could not post himself.

I do not feel like a good painter and it does not take long to realize I will not have a snow-balls chance in hell of winning. So I did not enter my paint work.

As for prizes, I could see where some people might have been motivated to finish a project if they knew the prizes. However, I do not believe the prizes alone would drive a lot of people here.

PS I also think Jimbo did a great job!
