Some quick hints and tips.
I've gone for a light spray of white undercoat once the models are based. ?Then apply a thinnish base coat of Chainmail - metallic colours help the figures to really stand out in this small scale, and silver means you don't need to worry about gun barrels and the like later on
Armour wash next, slightly diluted - I still have about 1/5th of a pot of the stuff left. ?When it's gone, it's gone, though, so I'm going to need to muck about trying to thin black ink to the same consistency. ?Either way, you want a thin dark layer that will run off all the raised bits of the figures and sink into the creases - instant shading, and so long as you keep the ink thin enough, you don't need to do any highlights.
Final detail work is added last of all - bolt guns in blue with trim and magazines in gold, shoulder pads painted black then with the squad symbol painted on one side and the chapter badge on the other (although for some company colours you need to paint the badge in white first). ?Those with keen eyesight will see that the squad badges, sergeants' bagdes, Terminator honours etc are all as accurate as I could get at 6mm scale ?
Finally paint the bases green, use an old paintbrush to apply watered down PVA glue, and drop into a container of flock.
Vehicles are similar - start with an undercoat, then dark green. ?Paint the sides the chapter colour of silver, then wash the whole vehicle in armourwash. ?Paint the boltguns black and drybrush silver (for some reason, this looks much better than using silver plus ink so it's worth the extra effort), and finish off with the detail work and badges. ?No sticking transfers, by the way - I painted all the unit designation badges by hand, using slightly watered down white paint to get the outlines straight and smooth before blocking in the badge with neat white paint (I find that neat Citadel white paint will start to dry out while I'm painting a badge, making a straight line very hard to get right. ?By diluting it to the same consistency as ink, it flows of the brush better).
I've not got quite enough spare Terminators to do a full stand of Grey Knights, unfortunately. ?I think bronzes and golds would make for some striking figures, though.
Currently on the painting table are the scouts, some extra Assault squads, Devastators, enough Terminators to make my detachments legal (as they've changed the rules since I planned the army under the flexible E40K system), a load more Land Raiders and Rhinos, two Thunderhawks (I dread painting those - too big to get away with too much), and the Chapter Master. ?
In total about two or three more Companies of bits and pieces to add to the three or four already painted. ?At a very rough guess, there's 4,000 points already done, and 3,000 points to do. ?And then it's on to the big pile of IG armour, and the MASSIVE mound of Tyranid plastics. ?But I have a cunning plan for the Tryanids ...
Edit - I forgot the Eldar. I have a *lot* of Eldar, too, almost all unpainted at the moment. I'm not even going to think about them until GW have the lists finalised. Oh, and about 12 plastic Warlords, assorted Phantoms and other old Adeptus Titanicus era stuff. In fact, too damned much. And that's without thinking about the 10 Bloodbowl teams, 3 large Necromunda gangs, Battlefleet Gothic ships and half a tonne of historical lead that all needs painting. But at least I can see myself getting the Silver Skulls finished in time for the Epic:Armageddon release
