Depending upon your opponent, how upfront they are with their formations, titan weapons mounted, formation special rules (especially if the formation was released online a few days before), and many other things about their army rules or weaponry and unit stats. Also the setup of the thatmy whether it has general limits in the number of certain units in the army, and other limits like no warmaster titans, etc.
You can have either a omg i hate his game, even though I am rolling half decently, this game sucks. or a more balanced game where your opponent is fair, does not hide what some units can do until they do it, and so on, then even when the dice rolls take a bad turn oyu can still enjoy the game.
I suppose experiance and playing enough games aganist every army out there helps.
I have regular monthly weekend gaming days at a club in mortdale sydney nsw, or at campbelltown nsw. We also have a saturday night game on the following fortnight to keep us having fun. Usually the weekend games are themed and have limits on the points allocated to infiltrators, the distance infiltrators can infiltrate from the enemy deployment zone, which titans and titans weapons are not allowed, maximum number of models/bases you can field in the army for any one unit type. These were brought into place when infiltrating armies like alpha legion and raven guard started to rules the winner boards.
However players turn up to the saturday night games to introduce units and armies they could not field in the games where restrictoins are placed. I also like the fact that most of the saturday noight games have a higher points value for the army.
I have been experimenting with mixing astartes legion formatoins in the unrestrcted games, and using assault deployment formatoins like underground assault, drop pod assault and aerial assault formations for my world eaters. I have been using my warmaster aligned imperial fists in a demi-company and tend to set them up in my own deployment zom=ne on first fire, and get the re-rolls for all those missile launchers. I like auxilia artillery companies to combat enemy aircraft as extreemly long range ground based aa, or to shred titan shields, and hit enemy units hiding behind buildings or in area cover tha most troops can not see.
I also like to use my alpha legion armoured company, my alpha legion demi-company and sometimes a titan like a warlord or warhound titan armed with vulcan mega bolters and a graviton weapon. Additional megalasblaster weapon added for the warlord. I have tried the iron warriors unque heavy spartan transported assault termie formation with poor results. Their transports which i tried to hide were targeted first, and their bonus to CAF was nuted and they were than shot to bits even after I got them into buildings.
My dice rolls have been quite varying, but most of the time i can not roll dice to save my armoured troops. and my initiative rolls have been abysmal. Apart from that , my tactics for the most part have been sound, and the games very enjoyable. As of this moment, I have a world eaters demi-company that I can swap out the transports for drop pods, or termites, asky hunter force, and an armoured company. An emperors children aerial assault force (lending the flying transports to the WE when needed), their own demi-company, armoured company, and garrison forc and drop pod assault force.
My salamanders are a demi-company, as are the word bearers. The iron warriors are a heavy assault spearhead which I can use units from to make the proioxis macro-assault wing. The iron warriors have a garrison force, a demi-company, and armoured company, an aerial assault company, a sky hunter force, the alpha legion harrow group arcadus.
I use my very large solar auxiulia army to supliment my astartes in most cases or have them lead the way with astartes support. the auxilia have 2 pioneer forces, a mechanised assault demi-cohort, a demi-cohort on foot, another mounted in arvus lighters, I have a leman russ tank armoured spearhead company, a armoured company, a titan hunter company, an artillery company.
For my mechanicum and dark mechanicum I have purchased 2 each of the intro box sets when they came out, so I have a major force there, but have not yet played andy games with them. I also have not painted manu units from these armies.
as to my titans and knights, I have a lot, just nothing largrt than the standard warlords, no sinister warlord, warmasters or iconoclasts. But I do have a dozen warhounds 2 dire wolves, 7 reavers, 3 warlords. I can ot remember all the knights, but most are the generic ones with some of the heavy support knights, and the taller fast assault knights. Oh and lots - yes lots of the smaller armiger and moirax knights.
As you can guess only half of all this is paintedostly astartes and solar auxilia. with about 8 titans and 6 knights. I am having a lot of fun painting them, and they ar elooking brilliant. My recent attempts to do justice to the imperial fists, iron warriors and world eaters are popular with my opponents.
I highly recommend the game, start out with a core army, and remember you can swap from loyalist to renegade easily to pick up formations from dedicated factoin formations. Learn the rules, as this part is a slow grow, and we are still trying to keep them all in our heads after a year. join friends who are not into WAAC DBAD lists, and then slowly move into the tournament scene. get advise from others on your army composition, and tactics, and then be free to develop oyur own style.
