I'm using some of the flyers for aeronautica Imperialis. I use the stukhog as a lightning strike, and the proxy potential for most of the other flyers is really obvious, so probably doesn't need mentioning.

Of course some eloi flyers would be lovely, but given that Vanguard would probably never sell enough to make their development financially viable I guess I'm going to have to keep on sniping on eBay.

For those of you who've said 'it's obvious': while that may be true for some people, it's not true for everyone. People like me have sadly never acquired large Epic/6 mm collections, and don't actually know what every single Epic or 6 mm model looks like. I certainly find this valuable (and the proxy Mk II list isn't the easiest to navigate any more, after all). Saying roughly what models are used for is meant to be helpful for @moredakka and company to decide how they should thematically approach new releases.

The other point is that this is a thread with a very specific purpose, in the Vanguard Miniatures board. It arises from a discussion on the future of Vanguard Miniatures and the direction @moredakka should be spending his energies for the best way forwards with his business (and naïve little me created the thread just because nobody else did, essentially!). Whilst I agree it's really great that there are other manufacturers of SciFi 6 mm, that's not especially useful to say here unless it's describing something particularly good that's in competition with Vanguard Miniature's offerings or it's something Vanguard Miniatures should have their own interpretation of.

Comparisons of SciFi 6 mm are particularly lacking out there, though! Perhaps people who know more about them might consider making a 'grand catalogue' type thread (not in Vanguard Miniatures's section ) where people can see what different manufacturers look like next to each other? One for other rules systems could be interesting too, @Legion 4 frequently has interesting suggestions!

Proxy comparisons is the lifeblood of these companies. I am surprised we do not have more of this. Miniwars started ambitious proxy project some time ago. Don't know how much coverage there is, but i think its a crowdsourced initiative. Don't think there is any measurements involved though.

To be honest knowing what the "old" epic models look like can just add to the confusion as the models produced by GW for the current 40k ranges look vastly different. Look at the difference between a space marine era ork and a modern 40k 28mm ork, or a space marine eldar grav tank and the current 40k offering.

Sometimes the proxy potential can come from a general resemblance to either eras models.

But what I use the flyers for in AI are as follows:

IN Marauder bomber: Novan regulars lancastrian
IN Thunderbolt fighter: Novan regulars spiteful
IN Lightning strike fighter: Novan regulars stukhog
IN Valkyrie transport: Novan regulars Kakapo transport

SM Thunderhawk: Novan elites Bulwark

Ork fighta or fighta bomma: Skinnerz fighter

As for AA just use any old weapon system that points at the sky!

@Nitpick I generally agree, but from what I understand, this is particularly vital for @moredakka's work going forwards too. Miniwars seems to have been making good progress on their coverage, it's now much more useful than it once was!

@lordlucan At the moment, in one way at least, almost all GW Epic models are 'old 6 mm'! But a good point. Old Epic can be a useful inspiration though, as you suggest. I think also that there are particular cases where a particular vintage of model dominates (the well-loved old-style Rhinos and Land Raiders are examples relevant to modern proxies, it seems).

Sorry guys, we didn't mean anything negative. We really don't know what Epic "era", many here come from. I've been involved with Epic since '90. So I've see it all ... maybe too much !

Regardless, for the newer Epic guys, may I suggest to check out EpiCollector. They have pics of almost all that GW has made for Epic. http://www.galactic-intrigue.com/epicol ... rames.html So you may know what is what. And help with ID ...

As far as old 40K, can't really help you there too much. You may have to do a little Goggling to see some of the older models. E.g. I know some of the new 6mm sci-fi models were never made for Epic but only in 40K scale.
And as we see now with some of the new 6mm Sci-fi "proxies"/"doppelgangers". There are pieces that could fit in to the WH40K fluff/universe.

Also check eBay if for no other reason to see some of the older Epic as well as later released models too. Just to make things a little more easy to ID if you wish. And see what was/is out there ... http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw=E4 ... k&_sacat=0

Don't be afraid to ask any question about Epic, etc. ... But again ... us old school, old timers, dinosaurs, walking dead, etc. have no idea what "vintage"/pedigree of Epic-phile you are.

Well, here is where I am coming from.

I don't actually have anyone to play epic or other small scale games with at the moment, so proxies for specific rules sets go right over my head. I am buying figures in order to collect whole armies so that I have a couple I can loan people to get them interested in playing. To that end, what I look for is reasonably fleshed out ranges, with several different infantry types and multiple types of tanks and support vehicles all in a unified style. If that style is obviously "inspired" by one of the factions from 40K, that is good, but not a requirement for me. If it IS 40K inspired, I would be looking at the actual 40K codexes for unit types and looking for figures that can proxy those, with reasonable extrapolations into the "super-heavy" and "aircraft" categories.

Hi!

My gaming days are behind me. Not that I wouldn't love a chance to play again, but as I grow older the hobby is more collecting and playing games on my own than shared hobby.

At one point I was all about proxying stuff. GW wasn't making any more epic stuff so looking at other companies was in itself a hobby within the hobby.

Once 3d design and accessible sculptors became a commonplace, proxies fell by the wayside since it is easier for em to get exactly what I would like.

Well this may well be great for you sir but it dosen't help us small companies that have tried to keep the epic community supplied with viable alternatives over the years.

I don't think 3d is going take too much of a toll until the prices drop considerably. For years I've had plans to do a set of add ons for the plastic falcons to bring them more in line with the current eldar aesthetic, but the sticking points have been time, cost and durability. I got quite interested in Vanguard's Eloi because the price point is better than if I printed it out myself and the models look good enough to work with the rest of the Eldar stuff.
