The rules are pretty clear in that pretorians e.g. a Leviathan can only move 10 cm even on charge orders. Thus disembarking troops means it only moves 5 cm that turn. I'm curious on how people use pretorian transports - seems to me they are pretty useless. :'( So if anyone have any insights I'm all ears.

Yeah, the only Praetorian that would really be useful as a Transport would be the Hellbore, and that only barely.

Waay back in the day ... the Capital Imperialis was also a Transport ... The rules for both the Hellbore and CI came out in the same WD ...

Oh, it still is. It is about as useful as the Leviathan for Transporting troops.

Hi!

As Magnus mentions they only real useful one is the Hellbore and 3 moles still beat it out.

This is one of the many things I'd revise for Platinum, to give elements a real practical use. Your basically paying for things you never use, which is rather pointless.

It moves too slow to be really effective ... I know ... ;)

Hmm, perhaps this could be "fixed" by saying that Praetorians are not slowed by embarking or disembarking stands/models that they can transport. It wouldn't make a big difference, but could help represent their inexorable crawl across the battlefield.

Hi!

That would help.

I just never understood "why" they gave such vehicles transport capability.

Even under 1st edition, it wasn't like they didn't take forever and a day to get where they were going.

Give them an "assault ramp" special rule. The vehicle and the transports ignore the movement penalty for disembarking.
Other units off the top of my head that might benefit from this are plague towers and the land raider (not the proteus though). Plus spartans, storm eagles and thunderhawks, as they all have assault ramps for rapid disembarking. Hang on, this might be getting out of hand... :D

Well ... just a thought ... moving that slow ... the troops could just disembark while moving. In some Armies with the US made M113 [my beloved APC !], the vehicle only slows down. Lowers the ramp to being horizontal with the ground. And the troops "jump" out ...

Just say'n ... ^-^

aye but the speed of the pratorians is as fast as troops on foot. When talking about them carrying troops in them I can't help but think of that scene from Deadpool with the Zamboni machine ;D

Didn't see Deadpool ... ^-^ :'( But the advantage of moving in a CI is the protection it provides + you could only exit from the rear in the CI when doing this "debarking maneuver" ... 8) For obvious reasons ... :whistle

And the CI would move then the Infantry disembark in the same turn. Which would give the Infantry more movement range. At least that is the way, I remember playing it ...

you mean just like chimeras, rhinos, and Triaros have and not being a bullet magnets?
there's a reason heavy tanks and battleships don't exist in armies/navies anymore :P

anyways...getting academic

point is in the various versions of epic they don't work regardless of fluff

Yes, you'd have to use cover and concealment [like tall buildings, ridges, etc. ]. :P :-* In SM1 you had smoke rounds available too. If you purchased them.

But that being said, you can't drive around in the open in any vehicle and not expect to be a target. :{[] Hide, use terrain masking, cover & concealment ... or ... :nooo

when your vehicle IS a building it's hard to hide.
that's why it's the rule of cool

as matty said earlier, both 2nd and 4th editions suffer from a lack of an Assault Transport rule. i've been trying to work one into the EA via the ERC but so far no go
