Post subject:  Looking to build a Grey Knights list

Hello,

Long time NetEpic player but have always wanted to do a Grey Knights Army. I know there is a NetEpicA list and was wondering if that would be a good place to start?

Conversely, are there any unofficial rules for a Grey Knights army?

Thanks!

Hi!

I have to make one given that I have a Grey Knight force and no rules to go with it.

Since I have had a few requests for one I may push it up the queue and get it done sooner rather than later.

What's wrong with the current list? Was there a certain theme you were going for that you feel it doesn't capture?

Stormwind, there currently is no specifically Grey Knights list for NetEpic. Grey Knights are available as Special formations for all Imperial factions, but that is all there is at this time.

Well the basic Marines list doesn't capture much of their uniqueness and has nothing really geared to against fighting chaos. There use as Grey Knights is restricted to a single special unit along with other Astartes.

Hi!

Magnus is correct, there is no dedicated Grey Knights list.

One needs to be made (along with several other ones).

Ah, sorry, I thought there were a couple floating around, but I guess they are so untested they don't come near an agreed/official list.

The NetEpicA one is pretty good. I'm not a big fan of the blast markers mechanics and prefer the SM2 rules. Both great rules sets, but NetEpic is my favorite.

Hey I was wondering if there was any progress on this?

Negative, we've all been busy with other projects, real life, etc. You could always give it a go. It could be a good field-test for the points formula to see if it is reasonably usable by someone other than me. Of course, you don't have to use the formula.

My personal view is that NetEpic should not introduce new armies; instead it should just amend the existing army lists for errors and issues of balance only.

That said, if you really want to have a Grey Knights list, why not have a go at designing your own :)? I'm sure you could come up with something, and others here who want to see new armies developed could help you to review and refine it.

Well the ships sailed on that long ago. There are already a ton of non original armies in Net Epic. It's pretty much nonsensical to even mention a concern like this at this stage. Dark Eldar, Necrons, Sisters of Battle are all not original armies, why should Grey Knights be the only ones left out?

Id like an official Grey Knights list. I have an unofficial one but Primach has said he will be doing it, so why would I rely on my own when someone with far more experience and who officially maintains the rules will be providing one?

Hi!

I need to do one, however free time is proving to be quite elusive for the time being.

I can whip up a list fairly quickly and easily with Grey Knights, since they are not such a large force.

Its a matter of having the time.

Tell you what Gnome_Forge, send me a PM and remind me every week or so until I get it done. I usually work faster when I get reminders like this. :)

I wasn't a member here when those decisions were taken. As a result, I am expressing my view that the decision that was taken to include those forces was also a mistake.

I'd be very interested to see how many people actually play any of these 'new' armies. I see very few, if any, battle reports for the three armies you have mentioned there, so I do wonder how much demand there was at the time for them to be included.

Also, a ton? The original armies were Eldar, Space Marines, Orks, Imperial Guard, Titans/Knights (Titan Legions), Chaos, Squats, and Tyranids. They outnumber the additional official NetEpic armies which have been added, so unless your ton includes all the unofficial lists (which do not count in my view), I would say that you're exaggerating a bit there ;).

Because if you really want it and you want others to have the option of using it, what better way to demonstrate your commitment to establishing it than to design and play test yourself :). You could always liaise with Primarch to work with him on it. He has given you permission to PM reminders too, so I'm sure he'd appreciate any help you'd be willing to provide.

I'm a great believer in only developing official lists when there is sufficient demand. If there were lots of players wanting an official Grey Knights list I would be more inclined to look on it more favourably. Even in that instance though, I have some reservations.

The first is that the Grey Knights are not really an army. They are specialist elite force used for a narrow range of missions. Are there really enough of them to be fielded as a large army Epic style? I would have to be persuaded that there are.

The second is balance. They are one of the most powerful units in the game. How are they going to balanced across an entire army? Also, aren't the majority of their vehicles, support units, and superheavies just going to be Space Marine units piloted by Grey Knights? Does this really justify a new army? There are already plenty of Marine armies, including optional and house rule variants, out there. Do we really need any more? How are they going to be distinctive, powerful, and yet not overpowered? I'm sorry, but I just cannot see how it's going to work from a pragmatic point of view.

To my mind, they're an allied group for other Imperial forces, which is how they were integrated into SM2, and, in my view, that's how they ought to remain.

Post subject:  Re: Looking to build a Grey Knights list

At first I was going to say that if you wanted structure for Grey Knights to have their own army, then you could just use the Space Marines and done.

Then I went and looked at the actual fluff for the Grey Knights.

They are, and are not "just" an offshoot of the Marines. This may be something that is worth developing, and I'm starting to have a few ideas about just how.

That said, I do agree with Irisado that they do not deserve to have an "official" army list for NetEpic Gold. Platinum is a different issue. If I do get around to actually developing an army list for NetEpic, it will be for Platinum and using the points formula. Note that I do have a lot of things going on at the moment, so I'm not sure if I can fit it in. But it is something that I will be thinking about.
