Post subject: | Some basic questions |
Hi all, I'm Troy. After more than 20 years I have finally convinced someone I know to give epic a try (exquisite timing, isn't it) and for various reasons have decided to start with NetEpic. I'm doing OK with the rules, but I have a few questions about this site and current events and stuff. For starters, I have gathered that there is a revision of the NE rules currently underway, but there are so many threads about that seem relevant to it, some of them kinda old, that I am not sure how to get caught up on the conversation enough to participate. So, What is the current status of the revision? What threads are most important to understanding it? What is the timetable for finishing it? What stuff still needs done for it? What are the major issues that need revising and why? All the sub-forums up above, are they strictly for revision info, or should general questions, comments, rules queries, tactics ect... go in those threads as well? (primarch's little into post about someone to lead each race makes it sound like the former, but then there is no place for the later but here in general). With a revision going on, is there any point in posting proofreading info at this time? If so, where? Likewise, although I can't really help much with actual rules issues right now, I do have some input on organization, layout, formatting, that kind thing from a new player's perspective, but I don't know where to voice it? Oh, and is there someplace where I should be introducing myself? It always kinda feels odd jumping to posting on a new board without an introduction. Thanks a bunch guys. |

Hello and welcome to the forum! It's always a pleasure to have a new NetEpic player on the boards! You're correct to say that there is a revision of the rules going on but it isn't that long underway; certainly there is the Errata thread which has been running for a considerable amount of time but the bulk of the revision threads were only set up at the start of August. I'll let Primarch who is the expert on these things to respond more in depth about timescales for revisions and so on. My advice is not to worry about the revisions that are going on and enjoy the NetEpic Gold books as they are. That's the system that I have used for every battle report on here with the exception of the latest one and it has served me very well. They are an excellent set of rules and I don't think there are any plans to change the core rules. Also, a lot of the changes being made are minor points tweaks that many of the veterans here believe need some slight alterations but it isn't anything that should prevent you from having an enjoyable game. While any changes to the core rules should be minimal there are several alternative rules changes that are in the pipeline but these are currently at the playtesting stage and are far from finalised so wouldn't recommend you jump on board with those until you are confident with the basic NetEpic system. We're a friendly bunch around here, so any time you need clarification about any rules please don't hesitate to ask, I'm sure someone will be happy to help! Enjoy the forum and the war!!!! |

Well, for the most part there really isn't any "revision of the rules" happening here. What is being looked at for changing is really just typos, things that got left out, and adding optional rules here and there. The core of the game isn't being changed at this point, that I have seen anyway. So as Bissler said, go ahead and use NetEpic as written for the time being. |

For starters, I have gathered that there is a revision of the NE rules currently underway, but there are so many threads about that seem relevant to it, some of them kinda old, that I am not sure how to get caught up on the conversation enough to participate. So, First, welcome to the boards and welcome to net epic! ![]() You picked a good time to jump back in since I was inactive for over 6 years and I am experiencing another spike in my enthusiasm for epic and have started quite a few things as a result. ![]() Quote: What is the current status of the revision? What threads are most important to understanding it? What is the timetable for finishing it? What stuff still needs done for it? What are the major issues that need revising and why? The current status is ongoing. It may have a month or so since it started, so its relatively new. The main goals of the revision are two fold. 1) To search for and root out the typos, mistakes and omissions of the main books 2)To tweak units that may need and to update the wording to be less confusing. What needs to be done in general is to read each book and post whatever mistakes, omissions or recommendations for tweaking you may have in the appropriate army list thread. A army list leader will be compiling such things in a master document for easier editing. The key threads to understand the more salient issues of late are the Eldar thread, the chaos thread and the IG thread. These have been the more active ones and touched upon several issues that have been longstanding. To this point it seems that consensus was reached on the salient points discussed but feel free to add your point of view or bring up new ones. Finally, there is no "deadline". People are contributing their free time to read, edit and comment, so I do not wish to pressure them with a firm date. Loosely speaking I would like to get the overall typos and such done my years end. Quote: All the sub-forums up above, are they strictly for revision info, or should general questions, comments, rules queries, tactics ect... go in those threads as well? (primarch's little into post about someone to lead each race makes it sound like the former, but then there is no place for the later but here in general). Please feel free to post whatever you wish in the thread or subforum you think is most germane to the topic you wish to discuss. If you think a new thread needs to be opened feel free to do so or even open a new thread in the general section (as you did with this one). I monitor everything on a daily basis, so nothing should slip my watchful eye. ![]() Quote: With a revision going on, is there any point in posting proofreading info at this time? If so, where? Oh indeed kind sir! Please post any proofreading corrects, suggestions or recommendation to the forum/thread that applies to the book you are proofreading (army lists or core rules). Out of all the things we would like proofreading is NUMBER ONE! If you have the time, post whatever proofreading changes/recommendation you can find, the army list leader will compile them. I for one would be extremely grateful if you decide to do this. I consider it of utmost utility! Quote: Likewise, although I can't really help much with actual rules issues right now, I do have some input on organization, layout, formatting, that kind thing from a new player's perspective, but I don't know where to voice it? I for one would be extremely appreciative of this point of view. While I understand a lot of "old hands" play net epic, it must be accessible to new players as well. However being so close to the design it is hard for us to see things with a fresh eye, so such input is extremely valuable. I heartily encourage you to start a thread in this section or which ever you choose (core book or army list) and point these things out. This time around I will be the one doing the formatting and such, so any insight is greatly appreciated. ![]() Quote: Oh, and is there someplace where I should be introducing myself? It always kinda feels odd jumping to posting on a new board without an introduction. You did the right thing by opening this thread and asking questions. ![]() Feel free to add more about yourself (armies you play, interesting games, etc) on this very thread. Quote: Thanks a bunch guys. Thank YOU sir! I am greatly appreciative of any and all enthusiasm (as you have displayed) to help things along. Primarch |

Cool deal. I have started proofreading the core book now and will let you know when I have something. Otherwise, Hi. I'm Troy and I live in Akron, Ohio, USA. I didn't realize it until recently, but I must have first been exposed to epic right when Adeptus Titanicus was originally released back in '88. A friend bought the game and I can remember us cutting up a bunch of packing foam into blocks and laying out a city on my ping-pong table. No detail, no painting, just plain foam blocks on a bare ping pong table. It was awesome. That remains one of the defining moments in my gaming life and I have always wanted to recreate that with decent terrain and more than just 3 giant robots per side, but none of my friends have ever wanted to play small scale miniature games. 25 years later that has changed a bit. A friend of mine backed the "All Quiet on the Martian Front" kickstarter which has gotten him more open to the idea of smaller scale figures, and I backed the Robotech kickstarter which got me all enthused about 6mm scale terrain again, so here I am trying to get an epic Tau army together (thanks onslaught miniatures) and schedule some time to play. Hopefully I will have some pictures of miniatures and terrain to show off in the not too distant future. Oh, and if anyone here is in the NE Ohio area, let me know ![]() |
