In an earlier post I mentioned I was making a set of paper chits for a friend who is in prison. Since the net-epic rules are free to print off, I sent those in, along with a small paper army. He responded by basically asking for every possible playing piece in the Ork and Space Marine army. Since I had the time, I have been slowly making those armies. I now have 20 pages of Marines and 27 of Orks...

To get things to print, I am using a stand-size of roughly
a stand: 1.5 inches wide by .5 inches high (~40mm x 12mm)
a vehicle: 1.5 inches by 1 inch (~40mm x 24mm)
a superheavy: 3 inches x 1 inch.

Is there something bigger than a superheavy? An ork "stomper" (superheavy) is described as "a miniature version of a gargant." Since my superheavy is the biggest sized chit I have made so far, I am thinking there is more to life than that. I am just wondering if I am missing something and need to make a few bigger pieces yet.

Yeah. I enjoy making the cards, but I am not a gamer. So I do not know the armies as well as I should. Thus there is a lot of guess-work in my paper chit army that many of you would probably cry to see. Any help making something that does not embarrass the net-epic community would be helpful.

Very nice. That does help. Sort-of. It lets me see that there is certainly a lot of variety in size. I will probably need to do more research on every piece to choose the size I would make it.

What was particularly informative (and depressing) was the simple difference in tank size. I can tell that a lot of the fun in any of these games is the time and joy of building and painting an army. There is a lot of customization that goes into this.

My question, then, is "how critical to game-play is the size of pieces?" If I have two tanks that should be 3 or 4mm difference in size use the same footprint on paper, is that a horrible thing for game-play? It looks to me like positioning of pieces is not a science, so a bit of the size is just the cool factor. But I know there are explosion templates where a little bit of size differential can make a huge difference. (did my walker get hit or not? looks like it did not fall under the template, so it was not damaged..)

Thanks a ton. I realize I am a fair bit out of my depth, not being a player but trying to make an army for someone else... (an army that anyone will be able to print and use if they want to give net-epic a try without wanting to expend lots of money)

(I don't play net epic, but:)

Your vehicles size is large to start with, so you could count the 1.5 inches by 1 inch as a vehicle stand, and have the tanks of varying sizes on the stand.

3 or 4mm size variation should be fine, not everyone uses regular GW models for their armies, FW tanks tend to be smaller anyway, then proxies from DRM/EW/MWG/GHQ will vary in size.

Thanks, folks. That helps a bundle. Makes me feel somewhat confident that my paper chits will not cause the whole world to shake their heads in shame. My current plethora of chits will work with their current size, but I will want to adjust my system so it can make titans, mega-gargants, and a few other sized things. But those guys do not need to be in my standard ork/SM army, so I will work on putting my current chits together in their respective PDFs, and build a separate one for the super-large stuff.

Thanks a bundle.

Here's a picture Krooza made several years ago with relative scale height for all the big Ork walkers, plus the Landa and Imperial Warhound. The scale is for 40K, but it gives you all the proportions you need.

Minor variations in vehicle size don't matter a lot in play. There can be some effect in a specific situation but it's unusual that it would be important. Over the long term it is a non-issue.

That said, there are a fair number of people who choose to base their vehicles so the sizes are consistent. It's often for aesthetic reasons. Personally, I tend to base LVs because they are smaller and basing makes them easier to handle. I have based larger vehicles when the sizes are inconsistent enough to become questionable, e.g. mixing the old Gibletgrinda and Skullhamma superheavies with the new Battlefortress and Gunfortress models.

Oh cool. While that image mainly shows height, I can figure out the base size fairly well from it. That will come in handy as I put together gargants and other super-hevies. I think I will make a separate PDF for those.

And it does help to have more confirmation that the vehicle size is not critical to game play. I think that was my biggest worry, that I would make something that would stain the spirit of the game for the folks who will be using the chits.

I am still hoping to have these files hosted somewhere besides my home computer, but for now they can be found at:

I never really found a good home for my paper playing pieces, but I have a better (more reliable and better bandwidth) home for them here:

https://sites.google.com/site/tyounglig ... s/net-epic
[Note added: When first accessing this Google site, Google pops up a login screen. If you simply re-open the link, it will skip the login the second time.]

I am now up to having the Orks, Space Marine, and Tyranid races.

Google throws that page up by itself. There is no requirement to login. Just skip Google's bit wanting you to create a login and you should be able to access the downloads. At least, it works for me on the 3 different browsers at my disposal.
