The campaign playtest is underway! 20,000 points means that means 200 Campaign Victory Points are required to win the war. First up, here's the army lists.

Nice one Bissler does that mean you will field 5 Armies either type and your opponent 10? |

Hi Ulrich, We each have 7 armies in total, 4 of 2,000 points each, and 3 of 4,000 points a time. Each one of these will be represented on the campaign map seperately, ie there will be 14 armies running around there, 7 for Marines (my forces), 7 for Eldar. Obviously, with such small points costs, the battles will be small, but this really is a playtest to see if the system works well and to iron out any problems. Hopefully it will become clearer over the next few posts! |

Note on Campaign: We are using the advanced movement rules, ie more difficult terrain is costlier to cross. We are not using Advanced Move Rates (bonuses for faster mechanised armies), Fog of War (and Scouting rules) or Off-table Support (barrages). |

Turn 1: Ok, in turn 1 we set our armies up along the baselines (rows A&L respectively). I had written out all of my starting positions for the Marines below the code, but we forgot to do the same for the Eldar. The Marine armies are at the top end of the map, represented by codes that are all one letter followed by 2 numbers (corresponding to their codes on the army lists), while the Eldar start at the bottom of the map and are represented by codes all beginning with E, and followed by a number. Again, these codes correspond to those on the army lists. To clarify, the Campaign Objective Markers are numbered 1 - 8 and their grid positions are as follows:- 1: E5 2: E15 3: G12 4: H7 5: H10 6: F9 7: G16 8: F3 In short, every army charged! All armies headed for the objectives and while there have been no battles, it doesn't look like we will have long to wait! Note: I know that the Campaign Map isn't particularly pretty to the eye, but I hope people can follow what is happening...

Turn 2 (in progress): As suspected, war is underway! While the Marines fortify a city and the Eldar a town and a city (all to protect campaign objectives), forces clash all over the map, with a huge 8 armies locking heads! I'll be posting links to the battle reports section as the battles are fought and reported on. Two of the battles have been fought so I hope to post these up soon... Please note that with the turn still in progress, the Campaign Victory Points have not been updated since turn 1. Battle 1 Report Link: viewtopic.php?f=85&t=24711&p=469223#p469223

Cheers DNME, I'm enjoying it (even though I am behind so far) and am pleased to say that there doesn't seem to have been any major problems - but maybe I shouldn't tempt fate! Interestingly I've noticed that I've had to start adapting the way I play in a few situations. That's something I hadn't expected and I'm pleasantly surprised by - early days though! For anyone following this thread, the report for battle 2 can be found here:- viewtopic.php?f=85&t=24714 It was a painful one for me! I've been playing catch-up in the campaign ever since this debacle! |

Having a balanced army is a must. When I made up my armies for my campaign I had several different load outs I.e. Assault army, titan assault, defensive, imperator, reserve. Spent ages deciding on where I would attack and where I would defend, and looking from my opponents side trying to plan fir what he may do. Even so I have had my arse handed to me several battles and done the same back. Even so best planning part I have done is having reserves and backup armies. I have yet to face one of the terminator armies that my opponent has hinted at. Strategic thinking often harder to grasp than tactical thinking and there will always be surprises. We also use a rule that the opponent can withdraw after turn 3 of a battle which has been used couple of tines . |

Yep, I do have specialised armies but completely messed up, deploying that army into Wooded terrain! It was my fault, I got mixed up thinking it was one particular army when it was actually another! You live and learn! The turn 3 withdrawal rule sounds a good one, but I'd be a bit concerned it could be abused, ie one player realises they are on a hiding to nothing and keep their forces well back and hidden. Could wreck the fun factor, but then again, it isn't much fun being on the wrong end of a hiding! |

If you think about it they can hide and run. But you leave yourself open and the attacker can swamp and concentrate fire on exposed units. Also if you choose to withdraw you can save more than what you may use. |
