I have a couple of Scatolo-style Dreadnought squads and I just can't decide how to use them.

The heavy option doesn't seem that useful, I've got enough Lascannons pointing at the enemy with all the Land Raiders in the army.

The support option seems okay to move up with an infantry advance, except that the infantry will probably start the game in Rhinos and be halfway up the board before the Dreadnoughts have really gotten anywhere. Running the Punisher profile instead would help I suppose.

The assault option also suffer from slow move/short range syndrome (though I do like the idea of them).

So what are people doing with them? How do you mitigate the slowness if using the support or assault options?

Looking foward to hearing suggestions.

I have thought about loading several squads into a drop ship to cause havoc behind enemy lines.
But in reality, the couple of times I have used them have seen them dieing without doing much :/

2 squads of Furibundus gives you 8 lasconnon shots for less points than a land raider squad (only 6 shots). Sure they have less armour and are slower, but having all your shots split across more models gives you more redundancy.
For 50 points more than a LR squad (100 more than the Furibundus) with 2 squads of heavy scalatos you get the 8 shots but slightly better saves and CAF.
So the numbers seem to imply you could get a bit of an advantage if you can use them right.

Because they are slow, I too land them behind enemy lines to secure an objective or I use them as AT Guns, to protect a flank or support an attack ...

Hi!

What L4 said. Either as a defensive line of deep strike them.

They are great to use in siege scenarios though. :)

They are good defenive units imo
for attack they are worse because they can“t go inside structures like Inf.

So it helps to view heavy dreads as partly-mobile lascannon turrets? I suppose. I'm not familiar with the tactic 'defensive line' when playing as marines though!

I have tried transporting assault dreads in a thunderhawk, didn't work too well as my opponent didn't have much infantry! I also didn't like missing a turn of shooting with the thunderhawk, I much prefer the idea of assault marines jumping out mid flight.

Can Dreds be transported in Vehicles?

I mostly (IF)use them in defensive scenarios.
You lso can use them as heavy storm INF. attacking units on first fire
cause they have a better average save.

Al last they are not the units I thought about when going to bed ;D

Dreads fit in Drop Pods (at least thy used to ?) 1 Dread = 2 Inf stands. And in the original AT/SM1 there were random scenarios. It was/is an excellent system ! So some times SMs were on the defensive ... at least to start out at times. If your mission is just to defend, hold the line, Dreads were good as AT Guns placed in positions under cover ...

There are some that specifiy yes (Thunderhawk is the only one I can think of right now). It would be good if you could fit one per rhino, but there would have to be a special Rhino card that had 4 vehicles (or a card with 3 Dreads).

But Drop Pods are purchased for company cards, how do you get the Dreads in them?

I really like the support scatolos. I use them to protect/capture an objective near my deployement zone.

They have a very effective short range attack (your opponent won't charge them with bikes...) and their 50cm range template attack is very interesting (they do no add BP but you get 1 template for each scatolo...).

For 150 points, you get 12*25cm/5+/tsm 0 shots + 4*50cm/5+/tsm-1 templates. There's not many units in Astartes arsenal that can be so effective.

Transported in a battle barge (or DropShip in Codex) they can be a very nice attack unit if you protect them from close combat with assault Space Marines/terminators.
