Deacon brought this up and I think he's got a fair point.
Currently we got two necron lists out there. There's the official Slann/Necron book where the Necrons are tied in closely with the Netepic Slann fiction, but have a fairly limited selection of units to choose from. this list has been around for a long time and I assume it has been playtested fairly well.

Then there's Stephanes list which is more up to date with regards to unit choices, and resembles the E:A: list more closely.

The Stephane rules:

5.2 Slann Rules:

At the moment the Slann book is close to being finished, but I'm still missing the really boring and time consuming stuff, so if I should switch to formatting Stephanes rules to NetEpic Gold, and do the slann as an isolated book, now is the time.

I think Stephane's "Necron Army List Main Page" would be of interest to anyone comparing the two lists. It details the rationale behind the stats, costs, and VP's of each unit in great detail, as well as a log of the changes and updates the book went through during its creation.

I can't say that I'm an expert in the NetEpic rules, but the Stephane units lists looks a lot more complete to me.

Why are the 'crons and the Slann in the same book anyway? I thought the Slann were the Old Ones, i.e. the mortal enemies of the Necrontyr race. Can they really be taken as part of the same army?

They can't be fielded in the same army, they are just listed together for some odd reason. And if you look through the book, strangely the Necrons seem like an afterthought compared to the attention paid to the Slann.

Does anyone even play them?

Then is there a reason not to remove the Necrons from the book entirely, and give them their own book based on the list by Stephane? I don't play NetEpic, but it would bother me to have both races crammed into the same book, unless the intent is to have them opposing each other, for instance fighting the War in Heaven. Presumably the work that has gone into the Necron sections fluffwise could be pasted into a new doc?

If it's not that simple WMN, do feel free to ignore this...

I think the reasoning must have been something about races being closely related. The Dark Eldar, Craftworld Eldar, Exodites and Harlequin share the same book too for example, although arguably the Dark eldar should have had their own book. But again: By that argument all the Imperial armies should have been collected in a single tome...and probably have Chaos trown in there as well.

I might remember it wrong, but I think Necrons might have been introduced as part of the Slann Army back when the Crons first made an appearance in the 40k Universe. Back then information was scarse, so I think they were just stuck onto the closest related list. I have a vague memory of people using the E40k eldar Phantom titan as a necron titan for example.

Rules-wise I have absolutely no opinion on what list is best. I have never played Necrons...in fact it has been years since I've actually played a game of Epic in any of it's incarnations. My knowledge of the Necrons is fairly limited too, so i am simply going by the ammount of available miniature, and here Stephanes list seems to have a slightly more varied selection to build an interesting army from.

Sorry, WMN, but the new Necrons in 5.2 are the ones that have been developed on here and playtested. I don't have any issue with splitting them out of the Slann book if people think that's a good idea though. They are largely only in there for historical purposes, but I guess the synergy of "most hated enemies" being together has a certain ring.

I don not mind having both in the same book
confused me first but is no problem

Well it have been a while since I read through the Slann/Necron book
and I never compared it with Stephanes list.
So I have voted for a mix of them
It would be sad to loose some of Stephanes units

The Kotrin Necron's Rule Book is in beta testing... I've tested it during 5 battles, I've reported to Kotrin all my feelings/thoughts about the army list. Imho, the codex needs a little more balancing about few units.

Have you asked Kotrin what he thought about this ?

What's the Kotrin Book? A third version? If so - got a link?

I won't vote in the poll, as I don't play Net-Epic, but I would think the two would be better separated with the Necrons deserving their own book with at least most of the modern units available in there.

If there is a model in existance (how ever it may be obtained) for it then there should be Stats in the rules for the model. It annoys me fiercely that the AE guys are off having fun with Warbarques and Pylons and other Necron goodies while we lag behind with some proxy stuff from the dawn of Necron. Live in the now people! I want as many (ALL) usable models from both lists to be present and I think the Slann and Necrons should be separate... however I'll bow to WMN's judgment on the Slann/Necron point in an effort to avert an apoplectic seizure after so much hard work.

Lol. Honestly, at this stage it is not too much of a problem to move things to seperate books The Necron section of the Slann book is so small that it wouldn't take that long. My main concern is that the current Slann/NEcron book is thorroughly playtested, and Stephanes list is fairly new. A fusion of the two would be equally new. It'd be a shame to change things only to find that the new Gold book is wildly unbalanced.
However I also feel that it would be really nice to have stuff like Obelisks, Heavy Destroyers, Warbarques etc. in there as nice proxies exist or are easily convertable.

But again: I'm not very rules savvy, so I'll leave it to smarter people to figure out the best way to do this ;)
